Pretty much all the game streaming platforms rely on Linux, so its not really arguable weather or not this is a stepping stone.
The way its implemented is still in Limbo, but Linux gaming has arrived and its here to stay.
Weather we get Linux native support, run stuff through Proton, in some container or fully fledged VM is still uncertain, but not if its goina happen.
Im honestly dumbfounded by how CCP can just neglect those known issues, instead of reaching out to the wine team in advance of releasing this update.
Officially supported or not, Eve factually has a higher percentage of Linux users in its playerbase than “ordinary AAA games”.
Just straight up ignoring that is a fail of truly epic proportions, especially considering how it would take virtually zero effort from CCP.
Telling the WineHQ guys which syscalls exactly are used by the launcher and postponing the implementation until they have figured it out isnt exactly an insurmountable task.
That thread would appear to be how to keep an existing Eve install working, but I don’t have Eve installed at all at the moment - do I have to wait for a relevant Wine update before I can build a working installation ?
The First Post in the threat links to another threat with a link to an old launcher installer, which should work with current wine staging. Please use this one to get install Eve from scratch on wine.
Ironically launcher uses Qt5 which is available native on Linux. Also the cool kids use Electron/JS nowadays, which would be even more portable (and more performant, compared to that crappy launcher as it is now). The most sad thing is: Client, the actual game, works fine everytime launcher allows to launch it. It’s just that …cking laucher they …ck up regular. Why? Does money from linux users stink, or what?
Just download the 5.0 build from within Lutris for the time being.
Performance isnt great, but it’ll do until the next wine-staging release comes along…
So, I tried to run Lutris again, to finalize settings and test if it works as it used to do before, but what I did yesterday disappeared… and the usual EVE on Lutris icon now starts as if I want to install the game again, which is what I did yesterday… so I have a feeling that it will keep doing this from now on, so decided to try the Steam option
So, I got EVE on Steam. Closed it to look for my profiles, copy/paste them, retry the launcher… and now it keeps crashing ;( I deleted the 2 folders I added and its still crashing. From Steam, I dont see an option to repair, closest thing there was a file checker but showed it was good, but no joy on making the launcher work. I imagine I can start over, but I have no willpower (not even with the improved implant) left to try tonight
EVE used to be so easy to run, and had it not been for them putting that stupid thing… it would still work. Oh well… I’ll try again tomorrow.
If you can think of suggestions on how to repair the installation from Steam pls let me know. I really hate Steam, its like so bloated with buttons everywhere, Lutris seems more clean.
Did you set the Proton version to 5.0-10? It won’t run with any versions of steam play later than that. You can find it if you right click the game in your library, click compatibility, then “Force the use of a specific steam play compatibility tool”
Yep, I remembered the 5.0 thing while I was reading the launcher posts, and it was working fine, but after copying that stopped working, and hasnt worked since, even after removing the ‘offending’ folders.
I’m back using Lutris. I downloaded the last launcher before the mess that was provided by… I forget, but thanks. The thing is that Lutris is not workign as intented anymore. Everytime I execute EVE on Lutris I get asked where to install. It defaults to C:\EVE but if I try to put it there it says it is not recommended, so what I did (and I have to do this everyday) is I told it to install on my old folder that was working, which already has the profiles and everything, and it tells me that theres an installation there and I confirm and it ends fast. Then launcher loads, and then I cancel the new launcher download, and that’s it, I can get in game with my usual CPU usage on 55% with 5 clients, and performs well, no lag doing relic/data sites. I just have to do that odd install everyday, and cancel the launcher update.
If you have malicious apps on your machine, typing your password in each time isn’t any safer. A keylogger will just as easily sniff the keystrokes when you type your password into the login form, or into a third party password manager like keypass or bitwarden
Those using Steam (not in wine) and at this time of writing no stock Proton is working from Valve, you can download latest Proton GE that is now updated on Wine 6.14 Releases · GloriousEggroll/proton-ge-custom · GitHub
