From the days of old when we mined in Catalysts, Thoraxes and Megathrons, to the days of the Mining Barge and now the Outrigger and Pioneer and other ships, it’s been a long road to now.
A road that many of wayfarer ganker has tried to keep miners from being paved with gold. But with certainty, Miners have beaten the Gankers who still fly those old Catalysts.
They already achieve this by diverting CONCORD. And gankers already have: plenty of options: Catalyst, Coercer, Talos, Tornado and all 4 stealth bombers.
I’m not worried about the Gankers, they’re professionals and damn good at what they do if I have to believe Zkill.
But what about the poor little Miner? His ships are weak and if we add pilot proficiency then they’re basically useless.
I save isk by not training and fitting armor or shield. I figure it’s useless if I’m caught in PvP. Easier to lose the ship.
I will always be a loyalist to the venture. It was the ship that got me here, where I am today. I used it in almost every career mission along the way. In my opinion, it still out performs any other mining ship. Sort of the Swiss Army Knife of Eve.
The pioneer is different but not better. It can support a venture but not replace it. The omega mining ships cost too much to be called affective. If you want to lose millions per gank, go for it. There will be a mess of gankers in here telling me the “benefits” of owning a 30 million miner over the venture that runs less than half a million.
@DrysonBennington I am not that long in this game, I never mined in a destroyer. I was told about and seen what a Rhok can do when fitted with mining lasers. However my days mining is ended when I became a PI farmer. My heart will always hold a special place for my old ventures.
They ( Fenris Creations ) don’t need more ships for mining, they need to change up the mining mechanic. Would continue that thought, but my ride is here, and I don’t wish to derail your topic.
What is wrong with the Rokh, not Rhok, nor Rock as in Duane Johnson? I can still mount some big whoop ass cannons along with my lasers and I am an alpha character!!
I am shocked a veteran player – such as yourself – didn’t know how you mine in a Rokh. Allow me to educate you;
Get your battleship parked in a nearby station where you plan to do your digging. HS or LS don’t matter to me. I L V E making rabbit holes in space!
Log out. Get on as your ALT, and have them park their Miasmos in a bookmarked location called “Drops”. Then log out.
Take the batteship out to your mining belt and get busy with them lasers.
When full you have 1 of 2 options warp to “Drops” and jetcan there, or jetcan within the belt, and hope no can flippers show up. Make sure you abandon the jetcan, so any jerk can freely open it.
I personally reuse the jetcan at “Drops” to hold all the ore I mined. Jetcans cannot be scanned down when placed in a safe bookmark. When done mining, return the battleship to the hangar, and log out.
Get on as the ALT with the Miasmos, already in space, and toss all the contents in the mining hold.
@Arthur_Aihaken I have done that method several times and it never got flipped. But I wanted to show the alternative. I use the safe drop spot when out in LS with my venture gas mining to avoid losing all my cargo. The big difference here is the venture alpha gas mining takes almost a full hour to fill due to the 5000 limit cargo hold. So I can do 2 to 3 drops in that time to prevent loss, especially if there is no NPC station in the system.
Meanwhile the Rokh’s tiny hold fills up quickly, roughly 2 to 3 minutes. If you are working in a dead system or HS where there is little activity, you should just keep filling the same can until you are ready to haul. Also I have found a jetcan will last about 1 hour, but adding more to it seems to reset the timer.
Have fun!
… unless it deals with sharp edged tools.
Not really, I had to go to Pochven just to get blown up in my ship. I keep reading here and in the game people telling me the game is dangerous. I recently transported a lot of goods in T1 haulers about an estimated 400 to 600 jumps and nothing happened. Wait a moment, something did happen, I got bored!!
Mining bores the s■■t out of me too. They need to fix mining mechanics before tackling weaponized miners. Here is what I mean…
Current Mining
I enter a belt of stationery asteroids, lock targets, start lasers, then wait 15 to 30 minutes depending on skill, to return to dock with ores.
What Mining Should Be
I enter a belt of dynamic asteroids colliding with each other but orbiting in a gravitational eddy. I must scan down my target, to see the composition, lock on target, match speed and trajectory, then fire my lasers. If I lose my target, my lasers will stop mining, so I will need to make adjustments to my path and range. All this, while I keep an eye out for pirates. Then a ganker arrives but they have been spotted, before they can make their target lock, I have fled the belt.
What Defensive Weapons Should Be Included?
Mines. Any venture alpha or omega should be able to deploy 10 invisible mines from their drone bay. Mining lasers should do some damage to ships targeted. They are blasting on asteroids correct? Omega miners should be able to do the same with higher tier and weapons to match.
Action is what the mining mechanics needs before you get to weaponizing the mining ships.
