This is not really that debate…I hear it’s happening in plenty of other places though
Not much is actually changing in terms of what is considered a violation of our EULA and TOS. EVE is largely a game for grown ups and you guys are always free to roast each other and have fun but grown ups should also be able to tell when it’s not a game anymore
What I’d like to see is transparency about this. CCP should make public how many people are being banned due to this new policy. Because, in theory, this isn’t a new phenomenon. Harassment has been occurring for all of human history, so one might ask, why do they feel the need to make this new policy now. Maybe, it’s just the politics of “the moment.” I suspect, that very few people will end up been banned as a result of this policy and that it is more virtual signalling than anything else.
This comes quite close to banning “bullying.” Now, if CCP was saying they were banning bullying, than all the problems with this policy might come into focus. Because as bad as bullying is, I think a good amount of people would agree that we shouldn’t ban it…Bullying is a part of human interaction. A part of growing stronger is learning to overcome bullying. Trying to ban bullying would be like trying to ban a part of human nature, you couldn’t possibly do it. And yes, there is a line that can be crossed when it comes into real-life threats, but there are already real life laws that can deal with that. So, I think we should really ask ourselves if trying to ban harassment is the right course of action. People will always harass each other. In the real world, the best way to handle bullying or harassment is straight forward, you confront it or you ignore it. Whatever the case is, the situation must ultimately be dealt with the person being bullied. Having a parent, like CCP come in and rescue you only weakens your ability to deal with future bullying. CCP, as good as you are, you cannot protect people from the real world. The best we can do is let people learn themselves how to handle harassment. Life can be harsh, heck, EvE is a harsh game. So, to me, you shouldn’t be trying to protect people like this and just let people learn on their own. Now, if you want, you can give people the tools to protect themselves, that’s fine, but maybe you want to ask yourself what your really trying to accomplish here and maybe this is more about making yourselves feel better than it is about helping people.
Guard, I have to annoy you with my question once more (I am sorry, I am trying, but the answers weren’t sufficient so far)
Is CCP using actual definitions for the terms below:
Racism
Sexism
HateSpeech
or would you consider things not covered by the actual definitions of “sexism”, “racism” or “HateSpeech” if someone would claim he feels offended even if the actual incident does not match these definitions?
Are you really willingly ignoring the cultural shifts around the globe that happened during the recent years? Are you ignoring the fact that there is no common consent about these terms anymore which make a more refined definition necessary?
“Case by Case” just doesn’t answer this very specific question.
Oh we all know how SJW snowflakes will do that.
White? check. Male? check. Two checks: GUILTY.
Or am I speaking too 2014ish and one check is enough nowadays?
^ you do realise of course that this enforcement is going to be practically impossible. How exactly do you expect to enforce this? Banning people for adding each other on facebook?
How do you expect to track the movement of users which are off of your platform, and then enforce punishments?
You’re going to have to be pretty damn sure that harrassment is taking place, otherwise you’re likely to be manipulated by people who use you as their own personal beating stick.
This is some Goon 50% of the time I enter their local. The screenshot was taken just now (18:30 ish Eve time, September 20). I keep reporting some of them (not most, because I don’t have time to constantly file reports). I don’t know what happens to them or whether my reports are useful. They can keep at it because they have multiple characters to keep at it, and to absorb all the warning penalties. And they have hundreds of people.
Can CCP please take stronger measures? It seriously takes a toll to be exposed to constant toxicity from alliances with cultures like this. Simply because you are their in-game rival. Constantly not only social media but also ingame.
For a first step, insult/harassment warnings shouldn’t be character-specific as well. Much like real life threat bans. And perhaps hate speech like this shouldn’t be a mere warning offense for first timers.
And perhaps a feedback mechanism to show at least my reports are worthy of my time? Some other games aren’t as shy as Eve to tell players about the consequences of their reports.
Echo chambers are a bad thing. Not only are the those labeled ‘SJW’ who expand the definitions one way, there are also the ‘deplorables’ who seek to excuse racism and sexism with pseudoscience.
I do have faith that CCP will be sensible instead.
Well, I may be wrong, and SJW baloney is just a usual cover of cfc finding new ways to bend CCP into selectively banning their opponents.
I mean, come on, we all know and understand that Stunt didn’t do a fraction of what Mittens did, yet the measures taken are drastically different, suggesting that CCP is, as they always were, a bunch of biased crooks.
I still don’t know any more that I did before they release this update this topic liitle clarifications because you link seems worst than this page on what you update or maybe you didn’t just another 5 mins of my time wasted reading these changes
When it comes to anger that the ship you just spent $80 in real money on has been downed you may well f & blimey at first, so that is more about a longer play out. If you are still doing the dodgy 6 days later then you need to get some air son.
Getting some air. A strategy more should use.
So I guess that’s more of a ‘quiet chat’ than an official warning. Maybe it could be done by SOV leaders or summat?
2p deposited.
.
As for sexual harassment you need solid proof. I have said before about how you have to play with your food to get the evidence needed to concrete-confirm whether someone is trying to chat you up. But that’s because the Law in the real world requires it.
Play with your food? Somehow I suspect that female EVE pilots are not shrinking violets…
Yeah, this seems ok as a start. I’m not gonna panic just yet. Like any policy it will grow with EVE, as more & more ‘intel’ comes in on how the bad-guys play.
Meanwhile… Anyone wanna buy a booster? Maybe a drone leg?
There is no information on what was changed, which doesn’t help inform a discussion about those changes, which themselves are somewhat about speech. I can understand a reason for that, yet still here we are.
If definitions and examples of “toxicity” and “verbal abuse” could be provided, I expect many would find them interesting or informative to read.
