In this article, I will go line by line through the article which gives us the very few official excerpts from the Amarr scriptures. I will include one or more brief thoughts about each line or passage. This is not to sound heretical or blasphemous, but to stimulate ongoing and deeper reviews of these writings, that we better understand what is considered so foundational in our lives. Some of the included thoughts will sound like I am playing devil’s advocate.
As we discuss each line, I will sometimes chat in an unplanned flow, and other times ask controlled (preplanned) questions. The controlled questions are to help us examine the scriptures so we have more than mere memorization of them. Anyone can parrot sounds, i.e. recite things, but deep discussion helps us understand or see things from many additional useful angles. There are no correct or incorrect answers during our talks, since the point of this article or chat is not to know exactly how the Amarr authorities want us to interpret these scriptures, but just to more deeply discuss and ponder the scriptures on our own for the moment). Just reply with whatever comes to mind; think out loud, and don’t fear a nun smacking the back of your hand with a ruler.
Lore
“The Scriptures are the books of religion: words of faith, words of morality, and words of doctrine. They show the Lord’s true wishes, informing the aspirant how to gain ascension to His glorious realm.”
The Amarr Scriptures are not a single book, but rather the name given to the collective holy texts of Amarr. They are not limited to just religious dogma; they describe everything from out-of-date codes of behavior to early technological breakthroughs. The collective writings have been maintained and updated throughout the centuries by Imperial Theologians and include texts that hearken back to the very origins of Amarr society, written in a tongue so ancient as to be unreadable by today’s Amarr. The Scriptures are the very foundation stone of Amarr society, defining the daily lives of Amarr the Empire across.
[end first excerpt]
My thoughts, passage by passage, are always started with a dash or hyphen, as follows.
- –“They describe everything.” …So then wouldn’t it be alright to call the sum of guidelines of each of the other civilizations their own scriptures?
–”out-of-date codes of behavior”; why were they once considered in-date (prudent)?
–What are the tech’ breakthroughs, and why are they considered scripture, when, on some worlds, tech’ and science in general were once criminalized and persecuted?
–Why do imperial theologians get to decide what becomes an update to the scriptures?
–Are we certain those theologians were objective, not biased, always doing their work honorably?
[next excerpt follows]
The Scriptures are also referred to as The Word (of God).
- –Why are they also called that, when sometimes it is not god, but theologians who add to them?
[next…]
The original Scriptures were divinely given to the Amarr from divine beings through prophets such as Dano Gheinok, but recent additions have come from emperors, saints, priests, and others.
- –How do we know the people called prophets in these scriptures were given the scriptures divinely?
–What is divinely given? (I know the meaning of the term, but who decides or confirms what is divine?)
–How do we know the beings who communicated to those prophets were divine?
Due to these modifications, there exist many different books of the Scriptures. Some have later been deemed apocryphal and been excised for a variety of reasons; the most well known are the Apocryphon which is important to the Sani Sabik and the alternate Scriptures of the Order of St. Tetrimon.
- –What exactly about each version of the scriptures later became categorized as apocryphal and why?
–reference: Sanicanonical Scriptures | EVE Universe
The full Scriptures are far too massive to collect in one place; the Book of Records alone consists of millions of individual tomes. Some of the more well known passages are recorded below.
- –Since there are millions of tomes in total for these scriptures, making it impossible for anyone to read the full scripture / “word of god”, how can anyone be sure they are following the word of god, vs. just following a small part of it?
–Since only A.I. can read quickly enough to read all those tomes, might only A.I. be able to become true Amarr, all us non-A.I. only able to barely scratch the surface of what the scriptures want?
–How many of those tomes are you interested in reading, and how much spare time do you have to read them?
Book I
“In the beginning all things were as one.
God parted them and breathed life into his creation
Divided the parts and gave each its place
And unto each, bestowed purpose”
- The Scriptures, Book I 1:4
–This does not say god is timeless or infinite, or why he is a he, or why he separated things, or why things he separated were not already alive. It leaves many questions. Does it perhaps leave questions on purpose, as one of the ways to keep us separated?
–Did he assign purposes as in different essences or cosmic forces which kept things separate?
–Since he separated things, why bother forcing them to unite under the Amarr banner?
“The Amarr people came into the world and the world came into being.
Our illustrious ancestors freed their souls from the evils of the old.
world and created a new one.
The great Amarr Empire was founded to cultivate the spirit of man.
To do so the enemies of the outside had to be defeated and the enemies of the inside controlled.
The Lord gave our Emperor the power to harness the Good and punish the Evil.
Ever since, the Emperor has lived the lives of his subjects and breathed the air of authority.”
- The Scriptures, Book I 1:14
–Why would it say those people came into the world… and Then that the world came into being? It did not say they shaped the world’s culture; it said the world did not exist until they entered it. How can something be entered before it exists?
–What was evil about the previous world?
–What does “lived the lives of his subjects” mean?
“The Wrath of God is Immense. His Justice is Swift and Decisive. His Tolerance is Limited.
Be Careful. Pure Thought is the Instigator of Sin.
Be Watchful. Free Thought is the Begetter of Disorder.
Be Respectful. Uniform Thought is the Way of Life.
The Mercy of our Emperor is Limitless. His Rule is Benign and Righteous. His Love is Perpetual.”
- The Scriptures, Book I, The Code of Demeanor
–Of all the emotions and adjectives, why start describing god by noting his alleged wrath?
–Immense compared to what?
–Does this imply thought by itself is bad?
–How should thought be paired?
–Be watchful in what way?
–Why be respectful, instead of immensely wrathful like god supposedly is? Wrath and respect might be regarded as opposites. Shall we respect only immense wrath?
–Why would an emperor following a wrathful god be merciful and perpetually loving?
Book II
“Our Lord visited his flock and saw that all was not good.
Blasphemy and heresy ruled the land.
The Lord punished the sinners and drowned them in their own blood.
But the people of Amarr lived righteously and in fear of God.
Thus they were saved and became God’s chosen.”
- The Scriptures, Book II 2:1
–What all constitutes blasphemy? (an insult that shows contempt, disrespect or lack of reverence concerning a deity, an object considered sacred, or something that is considered inviolable)
–What all constitutes heresy? (unorthodox beliefs or opinions)
–How would someone be drowned in their own blood?
–Why drown someone in blood, rather than end them in other ways?
–Why fear a god who is supposedly just?
“When the ears hear only
The mouth shouting
And the eyes see only
The fingers broken
The world has turned
And God has gone
Left us with fond memories
Of sweet life without pain.”
- The Scriptures, Book II, Apocalypse 8:18
–What does this imply we should hear other than loudly spoken words?
–What does that part about seeing only broken fingers mean?
“The Lord loosed upon them his fierce anger
All of his fury and rage.
He dispatched against them a band of Avenging Angels”
- The Scriptures, Book II, Apocalypse 10:1
–So angels can be like soldiers or assassins?
–Does god need help; from angels or others?
–Why would god not correct or maintain his creation in any other way, since there are infinite ways to do things?
“At the end of days when they descend
Watch for the coming of the Ark
For within it, salvation is carried”
- The Scriptures, Book II, Apocalypse 32:6
–How is salvation carried in the Ark?
–What is the Ark?
–Does this imply those who notice the Ark… will thereby be spared?
–How will there be an end of days?
“Casting his sight on his realm, the Lord witnessed
The cascade of evil, the torrents of war.
Burning with wrath, He stepped
down from the Heavens
To judge the unworthy,
To redeem the pure.”
- The Scriptures, Book II, Revelations 2:12
–What makes people worthy in his opinion?
–Pure in what sense? There can be pure evil, for example.
–Why would god not want us angry and warring, when he is also angry and warring?
–Don’t different versions of these scriptures help keep things separate, like god allegedly separated things? Does god want things separate only the way he separated them, and warring only the way he wants them to war, otherwise remaining how he left them?
Book of Reclaiming
“I give to you the destiny of Faith,
And you will bring its message to every planet of every star in the heavens:
Go forth, conquer in my Name, and reclaim that which I have given.”
- The Scriptures, Book of Reclaiming 22:13
–If god gave something, why would it need reclaiming? Doesn’t it needing reclaiming mean it has been lost or taken?
–Is this busywork to prevent overthinking or stagnancy?
“There will be neither compassion nor mercy;
Nor peace, nor solace
For those who bear witness to these Signs
And still do not believe.”
- The Scriptures, Book of Reclaiming 25:10
–Why is there to be no mercy for some, yet the emperor’s mercy is limitless? Is the emperor merciful only to those already believing what he believes?
–Doesn’t it seem that there actually is a lot of peace for many who witnessed the same things yet interpreted them another way? 99% of people have little to do with war. Everyone gets some sleep and other rest.
“So the Lord sent forth the Chosen,
to bring forth the light of faith
And those who embrace his love
Shall be saved by his grace
For we are his shepherds in the darkness
His Angels of Mercy.
But those who turn away from his light,
And reject his true word
Shall be struck down by his wrath
For we are his retribution incarnate
His Angels of Vengeance”
- The Scriptures, Book of Reclaiming 4:45
–Who are the chosen?
–Why is faith called light?
–Why embrace only one aspect or mood of god, and not also his wrath? Why not embrace all of god?
–Might “turn away from his light” be an oversimplification of “migrate away from worlds which have enough sunlight to sustain those lifeforms”?
–Might “reject his true word” be an oversimplification of “create technological barriers between natural cosmic vibrations or energies”?
–Are the writers of this passage saying mere humans are angels whenever they get angry?
And the Lord spake, and said, Lo, my people,
Witness, for I have made the worlds of Heaven;
And these worlds I give to you, My Chosen,
So Amarr shall rule the worlds of the Heavens.
- –Why are they his people?
–Why did he give the worlds to them?
–Why do Amarr, not god, rule worlds?
–Don’t Amarr and other humans actually just rule other humans on the surfaces of some worlds?
–How can any Amarr rule a whole world… when natural forces are what make worlds do what they do?
None shall stand higher than you save the Sefrim,
Who serve Me as others shall serve you,
For all things under Me serve one higher;
So Amarr shall rule the worlds of the Heavens.
- –Who are the Sefrim? (Again, I know what the term means, but who exactly are they? So little is described.)
–Why are they higher in this chain of command?
As Garrulor rules the skies; as Frisceas rules the sea;
As Emperor rules Holder; as Holder rules Serf;
Yet all under Heaven serve Me;
So shall Amarr rule the worlds of the Heavens.
- The Scriptures, Book of Reclaiming 3.19 - 3.21
–Who is Garrulor?
–Why does that being rule the skies?
–Who is Frisceas?
–Why does that being rule the sea?
–Why is skies plural and sea is singular?
Book of Missions
“Which test reveals more of the soul, the test that a man will take to prove his faith, or the test that finds the man who believed his faith already proven? If you know this answer, then you also know which of these challenges bear the greatest penalty for failure. The gates of paradise will open for you one time only; woe to the soul who dares to knock twice.”
- The Scriptures, Book of Missions 5:14
–Is this why Lunarisse only lets people become members of her corp’ once?
–Are all these scriptures really just a test to see who will miss the point entirely… by spending time trying to read and understand them all, thereby being distracted from countless ongoing/modern signs and opportunities?
–Don’t lengthy studies, of these writings or any other writings, boil down to just brainwashing and killing time?
–Should anyone look into what has been deemed worthy of addition to these scriptures, and if and how that has changed over the generations?
–Might we then become able to forecast what will become additions in the years ahead?
“To know the true path, but yet, to never follow it. That is possibly the gravest sin”
- The Scriptures, Book of Missions 13:21
–Why is “but yet” (a redundancy) part of these scriptures, if they are supposed to be the word of god? Why wouldn’t god be more efficient in his communication?
–What is the true path?
–How can anyone know that path… when no one can read all the tomes which make up this faith?
–Doesn’t this hint that no one knows the true path, i.e. the full word of god, thus no one can commit the gravest sin?
–If no one can commit such a sin, why attack and conquer anyone?
“Only through many hardships
Is a man stripped to his very foundations
And in such a state
Devoid of distractions
Is his soul free to soar
And in this
He is closest to God”
- The Scriptures, Book of Missions 42:5
–So god is always facing hardship, or has faced many hardships?
–How can something be difficult for god?
–What happens when we invent ways of reducing our hardships, such as convenient appliances, spaceships, hospitals, etc.?
–If everyone converts to this faith, and wars and conquering end, thus hardships decrease, then does that automatically make us farther or further from god?
“Surround yourself with the faithful, Stand together, for there is no strength like it under the heavens.”
- The Scriptures, Book of Missions 71:21
–If we are surrounded by likeminded, how will we have many hardships?
–If we are strong, how will we have many hardships?
Book of Trials
“So instructed the Queen to her champion,
‘Beware the righteous who seek truth in spirit alone;
The weak of mind are quick to judge with slightest tempt;
Thus fools go forth to spread false word,
Great misery follows those who heed what only the weak have heard.
Heed me champion, for only you shall know;
Within the blue ring of fire lies the final key of revelation.
Find this ring, my champion, and both mind and spirit shall be strong once more.’”
- The Scriptures, Book of Trials 2:13 - 2:21
–Why blue, of all colors?
–How are we sure in such is the final key of revelation?
–Why is mind separate from spirit?
“All things were created by the Divine, and so the glory of our faith is inherent to us all;
When thine heart shines with the Light, thou shalt know no hardship;
When thine actions are in Light’s name, thou art immortal.'”
- The Scriptures, Book of Trials 2:1
–If all was created by god, “the Divine”, why attack any of it?
–Why would we want to know no hardship… when many hardships are said to bring us closest to god?
–Why claim we become immortal when we follow this “light”, a.k.a. “act in its name”, when many who lived by this faith still died?
Gheinok the First
Dano Gheinok is perhaps the most revered Amarr Prophet. It was he who led the first conformists through the EVE Gate and onto the planet of Athra.
- –Why are they called conformists?
–What were they conforming to?
–What do his names mean?
“And they stood before Him,
bathed in His light.
Yet their eyes were blind,
Their hearts rebellious,
And their minds refused the Lord.
Darkness descended upon them,
Spreading inside their minds,
And the flames of the Lord died within them.
Yet one flame remained,
And within this flame, the Lord found faith renewed.
Casting the others into obscurity,
The Lord turned to the one”
- The Scriptures, Gheinok the First 1:3
–With all these metaphors, how can we ever picture what literally happened, such as what exactly he said or did that was considered “the Light”?
“And the Lord spoke to him from the heavens,
Described to him his holy purpose,
Bestowed upon him the wisdom,
Of Gods holy embrace.”
- The Scriptures, Gheinok the First 2:8
–Was this a literal voice from Space?
–Is Space itself God?
–Might “holy” be a mistranslation or mispronunciation of “hol-e”; hole; void; Space? Or of the wormhole?
“And so it was,
That Gheinok led his people on the great exodus,
To the land of our Salvation,
To the land of God,
To the land of his Chosen,
To Athra.”
- The Scriptures, Gheinok the First 1:32
–Why is this one planet called the land of god, when god allegedly made so many other planets?
“By His light, and His will”
- The Scriptures, Gheinok the First, 12:32
–Isn’t this sentence fragment too vague or open-ended to be of much use? (Again, with millions of tomes, how can any of us know what god’s will is, so how can any of us know what is “Light”?)
Prophet Kuria
“For forty millennia we struggled in the desert.
Time of infinity to grief our misgivings.
Time of eternity to stray without God’s guidance.
One can repent and pray for forgiveness.
But true meekness is one that has penetrated and laid its roots in the very heart of a man.
The stars above will not weep for us parting.
The air we breathe won’t notice our disappearance.
The dirt of the earth will embrace our decadence.v Only in God can we thrive and grow.
Only in God.”
- The Scriptures, Prophet Kuria 4:23
–Why repent or pray if we are all some of the things god made?
–Might “in god” mean “in Space”?
–Again, how can we know when we are “in god”… when millions of tomes unread by most are part of this “word of god”?
“I will not hesitate when the test of Faith finds me, for only the strongest conviction will open the gates of paradise. My Faith in you is absolute; my sword is Yours, My God, and Your will guides me now and for all eternity.”
- The Scriptures, Prophet Kuria, Paladin’s Creed
–Again, how do we know what god’s will is… when it has taken so many tomes to write it, and when it keeps getting updated/changed, and when it is not possible to read all the tomes?
“Though dissuaded, I came. Though perilous, I served. Though beset, I persevered. Though denied, I believed.”
- The Scriptures, Prophet Kuria 12:18
–Is it possible all the perils and deniers are signs we are Not on the correct path?
Or maybe they are hardships we should appreciate, not conquer, since it is claimed that more hardships get us closer to god.
–Why bother writing any tomes, or reading any scriptures, when hardship, not knowledge, is supposedly what brings one close to god?
Why not increase or add hardships by destroying all these scriptures and anyone who has memorized any of them?
Why not make us keep starting over?
Saint Junip
"Zakara saw the danger to his brother, and did not hesitate; without weapon or armor, he hurled himself at the beast, attacking with his bare hands. Enraged, the beast turned and struck Zakara, opening a terrible wound in his side.
"Seizing the moment, Garum ran his sword through the beast’s heart, thus ending the battle victorious. But Zakara, mortally wounded, cried out in pain. You sacrificed yourself for me,’ Garum said, taking his hand.
“We are brothers,’ Zakara answered, just before breathing his last. 'And in God we shall remain brothers for all of time.”
- The Scriptures, Saint Junip 10:25
–Might Zakara just be a new spelling of Zacharia?
–If so, might this passage suggest a dying out of that bloodline, or of that people who used such names, since they believed in the merit of sacrificing themselves for others?
–Should we then Not be the one to suicide like that?
–A passage above said we are immortal when we do things “in the light”, so… was it lying? Mistranslated?
“Rejoice, o chosen of God
For our blood fills this Valley of Death,
Proclaiming our sacrifice to God,
And he shall raise it up for all time”
- The Scriptures, Saint Junip 15:11
–What exactly does this mean?
“Here we are.
This is the world of God.
We are his chosen ones.
This place, this planet of peace and abundance, he made for us. It’s ours for the taking.
There will be obstacles and difficulties. That’s his test. We must make his gift deserving.
This beginning.
This birth of life.
This dawn of greatness.
We can not fail, for we have the Emperor to lead us and destiny to follow.”
- The Scriptures, Second Letter of St. Junip of Aerui
–How is it a planet of peace and abundance when they struggled on it for 40 millennia, and warred with each other, and wiped out entire races?
"Faith is an oasis from which we must draw in order to live. Like an oasis, faith is a gift from the Lord that must be shared with all.
"Like an oasis, faith must be used with measure and not wasted. Like an oasis, faith should be at the center of a garden.
“For it is only in the garden of a just and truthful society, watered by well measured faith, that we may cultivate the spirit of the people.”
– The Scriptures, Seventh Letter of St. Junip of Aerui
- –But how can an oasis or garden or faith or justice or truthfulness or society be good when they cause the opposite of hardship, thus moving away from god?
Prophet Anoyia
“The angelic Apostles of Heaven sing praises for their children!
Our Lord smiles upon the world.
Where the Emperor rules in his name
Leading his people to glory untold.
Hearken the trumpets of Heaven
Hailing the people of Amarr.”
- The Scriptures, Prophet Anoyia 17:21
–Who are the apostles of heaven?
"The word of the Lord is pure,
It is a shield for the faithful,
Brought unto men by the Angels,
As a guiding light in the darkness "
’ The Scriptures, Prophet Anoyia 8:15
- –Isn’t this another contradiction? Before, the scriptures claimed prophets and others gave us god’s word, and angels were sent to destroy.
“Chosen, you are first before God.
You are the True and the Faithful.
But in such a state must you hold yourselves high above all.
And constantly prove yourself worthy of Gods Love.
How can such a gift be repaid,
Other than to toil all our days,
In his glorious service,
According to his will,
Serving him always,
Bearing him first in our thoughts,
Always must we strive to show him our worth,
For we are the Chosen, Blessed above all.”
- The Scriptures, Anoyia’s Exhortation to the Faithful
–Didn’t another passage say Sefrim were higher than us?
–Many peoples likewise teach that they are god’s chosen or favorites or destined, so… which of them are correct, if any?
–Might this mentality just be a way to get troops to fight harder?
Amarr Askura
“For whosoever shall lay his life down for his Lord
He shall be taken into the arms of God
And forever consecrated will he be
But whosoever shall turn from the light
And run in fear
The Lord shall abandon him
And forever forsaken will he be”
- The Scriptures, Amarr Askura 2:3
–Why and how lay our lives down… when another passage said we would be immortal? Was that passage metaphor? Is this one? How do we know which is which?
“Face the enemy as a solid wall
For faith is your armor
And through it, the enemy will find no breach
Wrap your arms around the enemy
For faith is your fire
And with it, burn away his evil”
- The Scriptures, Amarr Askura 10:3
–Is this another metaphor, or are we to hug our enemies?
