Snow in Space?

Hi, I was wondering why there’s snow in space. Often at undock and at the gates, there are little white things floating around, things that can only be described as snowflakes. They’re all around until the ship gets into warp.
Why is there snow in space?

On a side note, EVE’s space is the brightest space I have ever seen in my entire life. And sometimes the white in the nebulae is blinding.

Thank you for your replies.

Quite apart from my inability to suspend my disbelief in the presence of the wretched stuff in space, I resent its interference with my ability properly to discern certain rather important features of game play, viz., active targets outside of the Overview.

Fortunately, a helpful suggestion from a fellow poster in the Forum directed me to the ‘Brightness’ setting. That worked.

As for the snowflakes, any EVE PvP/Ganking enthusiast will tell you that EVE is full of them.

I agree with you, Sibylla, it’s stretching seasonal integration too far. There are countries around the world where snow is not a feature of ‘Winter’; perhaps some of the planets could get with the program, or Mission Agents sport festive attire, but snow in space? Ridiculous.

Bah, humbug!

Yes, it is magic duh! Hanukkah is a magical time of the year, okay… Christmas too. I bet many of you didn’t know they both happen to fall on the same day this year. December 25th is always Christmas day, but Hanukkah jumps around a bit. This year it makes it difficult to juggle all the relatives as my family happens to celebrate both.

Did you want the non-magical, non-holiday, scientific explanation of snow in space as well? Hmm? Okay but remember science is never wrong. People use to believe snow is individual ice crystals that grow while suspended in the atmosphere ( within clouds ) and they fall, accumulating on the ground where they come to collect. This is very wrong. Snow is really a rare form of plant life that grows up from the ground and gets blown around by the winds and has the appearance of falling from the sky. In some cases, snow gets swept up in massive storms and blown into space. The common Earth storms are far too weak to achieve escape velocity, however some gas giants ( like Jupiter ) spews out snow into space. Sometimes so much snow to form ice rings around the planet like Saturn. The plant known to us as snow is indeed a scientific miracle that only grows in the freezing cold and doesn’t require gases like CO2 or oxygen to thrive.

Have fun!

Hi, Sasha.
It doesn’t prevent my ability to spot targets in space, as I said, the stuff is mainly around undock and gates and I don’t have any potential targets at gates.

I tried the brightness and it made everything worse. The screen got dimmer but the blinding elements didn’t, instead they bled into other things making everything look like bad exposure.

EvE is full of snowflakes people? I haven’t met one yet in 20 days.

I agree that the agents should wear Santa Clause hats for the holidays.

The space in EVE is so bright that I don’t need to use the light bulb in my room.

As for the snow in space… I have never seen objects in brackets in any of the videos from NASA either.

Immersion value = 0

Hi, Princess.
I truly do not know what your reply is supposed to mean.

Also, I do not celebrate December holidays.

Hi, Akolja.
I too do not use my light bulb when I play EVE and most of the time I have to use my mouse and face another part of the skybox before I get permanent eye injury.

No, there are no brackets in space. Although let’s not forget it’s a game and we need elements in space we can interact with.

That’s a bit harsh. And the sounds help a lot with the immersion.

My name is not “Akolja” it’s Akolja-Oenris! I seriously advise you not to forget it.

Snow in space is one thing, but I can accept it as seasonal fun.

What’s worse is have you ever seen clouds fly to the ‘horizon’ in space?

EVE space is full of flat clouds!

CCP must think space is flat. Weird.

@Gerard_Amatin So there is snow in space because 't is the season or are you joking?

I did notice the ‘horizon’ and the clouds in space!
I really thought it was weird but I told myself maybe that’s the way Icelanders think of space?

Do they still have vikings there?

So CCP are Flat Spacers?

:psyccp:

He’s not joking, it is part of the winter event, whatever its official name is, Winter Nexus or something.

@Uriel_the_Flame So there is snow in space!
Unbelievable…
Thank you, Uriel.

Iceland isn’t exactly full of snow either, volcanic activity yes, but it is silly to have snow storms in space. If they wanted to make it snow for this event, comets could be added into the game. Players could chase them for ice mining, allowing everyone to participate in a more immersive events. Don’t worry, it’s not going to happen. Games are more likely to place reindeer or the Coca-cola Santa in space. Iceland was settled by a large Lutheran population, so it doesn’t surprise me to see them with such a holiday event. Snow and holiday events don’t bother me either, but I don’t have my graphics set to enabled to see it. If the snow bothers anyone just reduce the graphics properties in the settings. I think it is a particle effect.

Hi, John. Thank you for your reply.
I agree with you that comets would have been more appropriate than snow in space.
I don’t think it’s silly but I didn’t expect snow in space. Now that I know it’s temporary for the holidays I can calm down, lol.

It doesn’t bother me at all but I’m glad that our Icelandic devs don’t think there’s really snow in space. There’s already a horizon and clouds and that looks weird already.

A big rock of ore and ice with a nice tail of gas away from the sun.

I like that idea!

It may appear to be snow, but really it’s salt. It is formed from all of the angsty players who lose a ship and get angry about it. Over the years, there have been so many angry players over lost ships that the salt buckets can no longer hold the vast quantities of said salt. This has created an environmental disaster consequently leading to systems being full of salt. Concord and various privateers throughout New Eden have been made aware and are currently working towards a solution to increase the capacity of the salt buckets as to avoid such environmental calamities in the future. Please be patient while this issue is addressed.

Incase you didnt know, this is a video game, not real life.

But even if it wasnt, do you say the same thing when CCP nerfs a ship? Do you really think that if EVE was real, the Gallente Federation would cripple their ships on purpose because it was too powerful?

“Gee, our battleships are dominating the battlefield, we are winning every engagement. Lets lower our Powergrid, and remove some hull health and ship speed because its unfair to the other empires!”.

I never understood this argument of “Why is this in here, this breaks the realism of the game”. So does nerfing and balance, and yet we all seem to agree that this is necessary, even though it would never happen in real life.

Its a video game. Not reality.

Hi, @Kaely_Tanniss That is a lot of salt! I do hope that authorities will be able to find big enough buckets and that by New Year’s Eve all the salt would have been scooped out of space.

Comes with the ice storms, which come with the Winter Nexus event. There should be an effect indicator above your capacitor display as well.

It used to be a lot worse, they toned it down a little bit. But there’s at least one graphic designer at CCP who would include fog, clouds and smog on just about any combat anomaly and any deadspace he/she can put his hands on, thinking we love it as much as he/she does. We do not.

Hi, Wadiest Yong.

Yes, as was kindly explained to me furrher up.
Snow in space… haha!

I didn’t see any but then again I wasn’t looking for one.

I would have to see it to know if I liked it or not. Some artists like to overdo an effect when they like it a lot. Some artists use those effects as signature. I think it’s cute.
