I’m sure he did a few deals, but how much of that story is just myth and exaggeration? There is no evidence that any of this happened. Meanwhile, I know at least 6 people who offer to serve as “escrow middlemen” because they are “highly trusted” and would “never” scam - I trust them more than I would trust Chribba.
Even if (if) he served as a honest middleman - so what? He logged into a game, and did menial labor for other players? Eventually, he got bored and quit?
So he claimed (a decade ago) that people trusted him with 85 trillion isk, and he always honored the agreement - I’ve heard similar claims from Jita scammers.
Is there any evidence of this? That’s what I’m asking.
I think maybe it’s an exaggeration.
Here is a more recent statement by Chribba, which I think is more accurate:
EDIT: I found a statement from Chribba in 2011, where he claims to have handled 175 trillion isk in trades. Two years later, he only claimed 85 trillion isk.
I dont know how he calculated the ISK, maybe he made a mistake somewhere. While being honest, he is only human.
As for recomendations, probably you would have to ask some people with who he worked.
But as long as EVE exists, you cant be 100% sure the other party will be completely honest all the time, no matter how much trust and reputation people get.
Of course I am an exception and you can always trust me.
I am an honest third party broker, trusted with more than 315 trillion isk in super capital sales and Orca dividends. You can always trust me, nobody has ever said otherwise.
I trusted Aiko and she took my name, my first born and sent a plague of locusts to my neighbour Keith devastating his perennials. 0.05 out of 10, would only use again if desperate.
I wonder did CCP erect a statue based on hearsay or did they actually do some research and actually confirmed the claims about Chribba and decided to erect the statue based upon such evidence instead?
My guess would be that he at least knew some people on the CSM if not some of the CCP guys. He probably also just had a fair bit of fame just from being the guy that mines veldspar in a dreadnaught. It was enough for someone to pay attention to him as an EVE celebrity. The rest is history.
Nowadays that wouldn’t mean as much, CCP isn’t the rockstar company it used to be full of colourful charachters, it’s a series development teams in a business unit of a bigger games company. It would be hard to imagine things happening in the same way now.
In days gone by, we were allowed to have raffles in the forums. I raffled a countless number of capitals and Chribba was always the 3rd party. He always kept his word and charged a fair fee. The people that say he cheated him are the equivalent to Akio’s alts here. They intentionally lie and try to discredit the people that they’re jealous of.
If you’ve ever seen his fleet of ships you’d be impressed. It’s an odd ship, but his Revenant is still impressive (and not inexpensive).
