I had the opporunity today to put a friend in Eve Online and when they download the launcher from the officiel website, i was surprised to see this is now the new launcher - without even saying it’s a beta or else, it’s just saying it’s the brand new launcher and we are still able to download the legacy one…
Does that mean it’s officially release and it’s a v1.0 ?
No I will not file a bug report. UAT should have picked this up before it went to production and something so trivial should not be in the client this close to release.
Will the new launcher have a button to trigger client update download like the old old launcher had (basically an Reload Launcher button which was scrapped in the new old launcher) so that we can trigger speedy download initiation of patches without having to restart the entire launcher to trigger the download?
tbh I am scared when they make this the official launcher. Fingers crossed for no bugs or problems with the anti virus (cough cough Paradox launcher cough)
My Opinion
I am not wild and crazy about getting a new launcher, but I am also not boo and hiss about it either. Meh…
Windows Testing
I ran over to a Windows box, I was setting up for a client, and tried out this new launcher. I quickly came to the opinion this is a nothing burger with a side of zen fries. It launches the game yet I still see the common triple pilot screen upon logging in and logging out. I also noticed it runs multiple processes of itself (akin to web browsers) in the task manager instead of only one. This is just a waste of memory and I have no idea why I really need a new launcher. Once you are signed in you can kill the launcher, so that at least is the one positive I can take away from this experience.
Linux Testing
Well I am not going to bother testing it, when it becomes mandatory I will either; use it and keep playing Eve Online or it won’t work and I will go find amusement elsewhere.
Result
This is another common example of a software group having their priorities askew. Budget and resources should be placed elsewhere in the system before pork barrel projects, minor eye candy, and fruitless endeavors.
The launcher will install itself into %LocalAppData% and %AppData% (Unless you use steam). It shouldn’t matter much if this is on a HDD or a SSD. As with the old launcher you can configure where the launcher keeps your EVE files. Having this location on a SSD is what you are looking for, as this will affect how quickly EVE can load.
In the Settings menu, under Tools / Cache . You can access the Settings menu from the wheel icon in the top-right corner of the launcher (or the Ctrl+F menu)
I returned to Eve two months ago and have been playing Eve daily, using the new launcher. I’ve had zero problems, even adding a few more accounts. It works just fine with Windows built-in anti-virus.
If you use a third-party anti-virus then that’s on you. I also have zero problems with the Paradox launcher. Windows Defender, or whatever it’s called these days, works just fine.
Eah I ran into problems as it triggered the ransomware on Windows Defender when I first got Stellaris. Beyond that I have not gotten issues also Was a headache to figure out tho.
Apple Silicon Launcher:
I miss the possibility to move the ‘SharedCache-Folder’ to another location. For example to an external hard drive. Could you please add that?
This is really annoying as this randomly clutters all kinds of data into places where I don’t want that data. Considering how slow the launcher is to load itself, it also matters that I can have it on a faster SSD than my C-partition. Is there no way to move the files into a different folder and only reference it to AppData?
