The Orca

Too bad they didn’t figure this out before they nerfed most of mining to compensate.

I challenge @CCP_Dopamine to ignore this juvenile teasing.

Fine, go talk to someone else then.

Nothing juvenile in my challenge, because it is touches the heart of the problem; if CCP really, truly, thinks that there is no place in Eve for the solo player, then tell us unequivocally, and stop taking our money.

As for you, I shall leave you in peace beneath your bridge.

But not so unproductive that people rarely do it.

But like i say, we’ll see what CCP do with it in the next few months.

Yes Karen, you can’t mine in anything but an Orca.

So I might be off on my numbers but I used the in-game simulator to fit a procurer with T2 miners, crystals, upgrades and drones, and drone rigs, My total yield came out to 26.5m3/sec (unboosted).

I did the same with a Skiff, got 29.3m3/sec (unboosted)

I did the same with an Orca, T2 drones and rigs, and got 24.8m3/sec.

And I don’t think these include implants either, which the Orca does not have.

So where am I missing the Orca mining more than a Procurer?

Travel time between belt and station maybe?

Still, that is besides the point. If the orca mines “too much” by whatever metrics CCP deem appropriate then the yield will be brought down.
What CCP hinted is that the Orca was not supposed to be a solo mining ship, they have adjustment in mind but have"something up the sleeves" to keep it relevant in fleets. Let’s see…

What do you think MMORPG stands for?

I am not so much disappointed that they are potentially nerfing the Orca. What I am disappointed about is that for years I have been asking for drone based mining ships. We finally get some and now we are at risk of loosing them.

If they reduce the yield, it would have to be extreme or I think most people will still use them. In fact, if AFK gameplay is a concern, this would make it worse. If it is extreme, then I will probably just go back to an exhumer, no big deal. If they do take away the drones, I would love to get on-grid compression for the Orca or a much longer boost cycle. The hold is too small to be both a booster and a hauler.

For those saying the Orca is perfect for long range mining excursions, you can always drop your barge/exhumer into the ship maintenance bay, haul it to whatever system, dock and swap. Not that big of a deal.

You can tone it down a bit a time until players shift their use.

But @Gerard_Amatin had a great idea for a drone barge that makes sense.

Is that in this thread?

They will, and it will get compression, and there will still be no real reason for most people to use them, and most will just sit docked.

With a compression ability, wouldn’t that leave the orca out on the belt longer potentially increasing the risk of losing the entire payload?

Frostpacker has a dedicated pilot just to take the payload to station so the Orca can continue to boost the fleet of Barges.

The only compression would do is inside the station where it is safe.

Perfect, taking the Mining drone bonus from the Orca and handing it to the Retriever would aid in that idea.

Yes, which will appease the ganking community.

I usually do the same, but that ties up two pilots who are not contributing to ore intake, or at least not directly.

Picture taken from the good old days of the Triglavian Invasion and use of a Obelisk to return the payload to station.

Oh dear - try reading the thread, then you might see:

What is it about solo mining that does not fit in a multi-player game? Other players are the environment, the customers for stuff I build, even, yes, a threat in the form of gankers. I am interacting all the time with other players. What MMORPG does not dictate is fleet mining or cooperative mining. Heck, many of the multi-boxers, whether they are miners or gankers, are flying solo. That is why they are multi-boxing…

Have seen it the first time. Didn’t care and still don’t care.
