This games boring as hell you should reduse the amount of systems tbh

Has anyone considered anti-afk mining CAPTCHAS for high sec?

Yes. Many times. Horrible idea. There is not a single person in this World who’s not at least annoyed by CAPTCHAs, if not hating them from the bottom of their soul.

You get 30 seconds to click the squares with bicycles in them or you go suspect.

I think the solution is Mining Tetris. It’s a minigame, like Minesweeper for explorers. Basically, miners have to actively be at their keyboard and guide the incoming ore into their hold. Different rocks have different shapes, so they have to think fast in order to fit the ore and maximize their profit! Don’t stack Kernite next to Plagioclase, or else your ship will explode - and watch out for space weevils!

Compulsory Project Discovery completions as a captcha.

Introducing a tedious repetitive activity on top of an inherently static and borderline boring one is not a solution.

If you think Tetris is tedious, I’m not sure you enjoy video games…

It’s not when you want to play it. It is when it’s a minigame that you have to do each time you want to play something else.

If you don’t want to play EvE Online, you can play another game?

Wait, what? That’s what you are suggesting - a tetris. I’m just saying that the solution can be a feature that is more in line with EVE.

Reality is somewhere in the middle indeed, which is the reality of the status quo where ganking is allowed.

If both sides truly were ‘going to extremes’ the opposite to ‘nerf ganking’ requests would be ‘buff ganking’ requests, not ‘please stop asking for gank nerfs’.

This is not the discussions I see.

Gank discussions are usually really one-sided with only one side going to an extreme of asking for ‘just one more nerf’ with no apparent goal in mind when asked. Without clear explanation their goal appears to be to ask for ‘just one more nerf’ to inconvenience ganking further and further until ganks no longer happen.

On the other side people usually aren’t extreme and going as far as to call for gank buffs and removal of CONCORD. Instead the other side usually consists of players who like the status quo that EVE is dangerous, players who would not like to see ganks nerfed.

I’m not calling for buffs to ganking, which is what I would do if I were to pick ‘an extreme’. I just think that defence and fitting with player threats in mind should be relevant anywhere in the game. I think that high security space too has to have some risk of player attacks, just like all other parts of space too have risk of player attacks, albeit much higher risk as those other parts of space have no automatic revenge from CONCORD.

There are game design solutions that would keep the risk at the same level, maybe slightly lower depending on subjective opinion, and alleviate most of the problems at the same time.

And what would be these ‘problems’ you speak of be?

That other players can pose a threat to miners?

It’s toxic and drives new players away!!!

I would argue that we need ALL players here.

Saying we “don’t need your kind here” is some racist BS. How fun will this game be for the “hardcore” pvp tryhards when there’s no carebear miners and indy types making stuff for them to blow each other up with?

Your comment shows a special, insulated kind of ignorance.

Exactly.

The counters to ganks are already there; Concord and insurance…

If you’re advocating for additional protections for new, starting characters? Then ok, that’s kindof what 1.0 systems are for and “starter” content is geared in, no? There’s plenty of “intrroductory” content in starter systems.

While I’d argue that the content there isn’t nearly as “hand holdy” for some, it should be plenty to get most capsuleers started along thier chosen paths.

If anything, there’s not enough guidance, support or incentive around Corporation formation and play. As this thread repeatedly shows, it’s a highly social game, almost to the core. Yes, there are many, many purely solo players but I would argue that it is like this as there’s no real incentive or advantage for a solo player to join/fly in a corp (actual group play, not just a corp tag), other than the occasional impromptu mining fleets or gank fleets.

The latest commercials for Eve feature the line; “this game….you’re not ready for it” as a challenge to new players saying….what? “this game is more difficult that you’re used to”? “this game is more unforgiving than you’re used to” or “this game enourages griefing until you quit”?

No matter what side of the fence (law) you sit on, crushing the spirit of noobs (while fun) will only be a detriment in the long run. This game already has a declining population - look it up for yourselves. There used to be over 2mil concurrent, now there’s less than 35k on average.

What changed? Is the game just too old? Too many other games competing for the playerbase? Players aging out and busy raising families when they used to play?

Whatever the reason are highsec ganks and gatecamps really good for the game? Is it helping to further a game and community that you enjoy, or accelerating its doom.

Does it even matter to a true pirate?

First off, people who dislike PvP in games are not a ‘race’.

Second, not everyone likes every kind of game.

And likewise, not every game needs to cater to every kind of player.

EVE doesn’t need to change in order to be fun for people who dislike player-versus-player content, this would alienate a large part of it’s existing player base that currently plays EVE especially because EVE has been offering that kind of gameplay for over two decades, or at least enjoys a game where such threats are possible if they aren’t actively participating in it.

You refuse to listen to anyone. I’m able to solo mine in High Sec. I did it for years without losing a single mining ship.

It’s easy to not get ganked in this game. I even mined while gankers destroyed ships right next to me. You just have to know how to protect your ships.

I have failed those captchas. Not because I couldn’t determine which squares had bicycles or what not, but because I completed the captcha too fast or whatever.

This is a horrible idea. EVE is a continuous live universe. Being AFK is like falling asleep at the wheel. You’re free to do it – it’s your choice. But if you find yourself in a wreckage after you wake up you don’t have anybody else to blame but yourself. Adding some sort of artificial surveillance mechanism to check whether the pilot is awake/non-AFK is just that – artificial. It makes no sense within EVE universe.

AFK mining is easy to solve, if that’s such a huge problem. Make the rocks smaller so that one can’t go for long before they have to move to a new rock. And the last time I checked, high sec rocks were aleady pretty tiny. You could maybe step away from the game for 5 minutes, but then you had to come back. Hardly what I would call being AFK.
