New players barely spend anything on games (the industry conversion rate is around 2%). If you take a look at aggregators of public opinion like Steam, you’ll see heavy dissatisfaction with CCP’s monetization (or perception of such) from new players. There are whales among new players for sure, but old players, especially for a game that has existed this long, tend to have established careers and plenty of pocket money to spend on stupid ■■■■ like this.
CCP isn’t trying to replace their player base; they’re trying to double-dip from both demographics, and they’re able to do this because they know that no matter how much they spit in the faces of the veterans, they’re invested so much into this game that they’ll let CCP get away with pretty much anything.
Trust me, if the old players actually started leaving in any considerable amounts, you’d hear CCP management terror-shitting themselves from California. But that’s just not going to happen, because…

Not exactly true, I extracted 120mil sp each from 2 toons and gave all the isk away just to have 0 incentive to come back and I’ve been playing since 2007 and have payed a but load of money to ccp already over the years.
About the price of 42 Full game titles, companies that create those titles take a few years to develop them. So for sure dev time invested compared to monthly sub’s is already pretty damn good income.
For them to sell skins and stuff is understandable as a way for people that love the game to support the developers more.
But blatantly shoving ad’s everywhere constantly on a subscription game is sacrilege. The first game that I’ve ever seen go down this route is 9 dragon’s and it got worse over time to the point where they now play real life adverts on the side of your screen while you play.
If you guys want a game that you can respect and play many years from now you need to converse now with CCP so they can put a stop to it before it gets out of hand. For me its too late already I have already given up on Eve it was great for many many years. So the choice is your’s white knight CCP now and watch the game get worse or stand up to CCP and help them get Eve back on track referring mostly to you Mr Epeen.
They have a responsibility to care thou as a company.
Let’s make 2 alternate realities quickly for the future.
1a. They escalate these ad’s and try get the most out of the game that they can because they think the ship is sinking. = The players loose hope in not only Eve but also CCP and any game they make in the future will be met with distrust and the players will be unwilling to invest time into it.
1b. They slowly escalate the ad’s but players still play Eve for many years to come and CCP only loose a portion of the player base.
2a. CCP apologizes for the add’s but say that they need the income to survive because of the company being bought out for much more than subscriptions alone can make up for in many years worth of development.
So instead make actual content additions to the game to inspire people to play again and make skin’s 1/5th of the price and ask that players buy more skin’s to support them in hope that by having skins that are much cheaper 200x more people actually buy them (as a player I probably would have spent a lot more on skins if they where a lot cheaper not sure if its just me thou probably not (More bang for the buck even thou CCP looses nothing by more people having skins)).
Players feel respected and are more willing to invest into a game with more than just time but money as well to help CCP grow.
We tried doing that like a decade ago during that whole $800 jeans fiasco, and if it didn’t work then, it sure as hell won’t work now.
History has shown that a bad reputation in the video game industry means jack ■■■■. Case in point: look up Sergey Titov and how he makes millions from every new project he touches despite almost single-handedly destroying the survival genre, or all of the borderline-criminal stuff EA and Ubisoft have done.
Most gamers are some of least activism-minded people on earth. They don’t care about anything with regard to their hobby aside from having it make them feel good.
I mean, I’m not going to stop playing or anything. And it is likely due, at least in part, to real world events. However, this has been a rather steep and prolonged decline (24% decline in PCU between Sunday May 16 and Sunday June 27th). In fact, the dip is now bigger and steeper than the dip associated with the drifter invasion and blackout. And it is considerably worse than the decline in player numbers that is being seen in other games.
Also, why read people complaining about monetization when you can instead listen to people complaining.
But you can also find examples of anti-consumer practices having serious financial ramifications for companies as well. Don’t get me wrong, a sucker is born every minute, but so many gamers have been burnt that a lot of them have actually stopped buying into the hype machines, getting the pre-orders, and all that.
I just wish that more gamers would become savvy consumers. Then maybe the gaming industry might have to return to a business model of… idk… making great games that people actually want to play.
CCP and CSM 16 turned EVE into a toxic pile of trash that is no longer fun for anyone to play. Stop bitching about the game, the DEVS, and CSM if you still log in and pay for the game. Logging in and paying for the game is why CCP wont listen to the customers. The customers have the power to change EVE online and CCP will bend to the demands of the customers if you all would just stop logging in and stop paying for the game. CCP would roll back ever change made in less than 5 minutes if you all stop logging in and paying for the game. Bitching at CCP on these forums wont fix a dam thing. Smack Rattati and the rest of the, no more fun in EVE, DEVS at CCP in the mouth by never logging in again and paying for EVE.
