Hello @Justunen_Yatolila
I canât believe that I missed this thread when you posted it over a week ago. Although I am an American, I have traveled to China a dozen times. I love visiting China. As far as Westerners not understanding much about China, I tend to agree with you. One thing that I have noticed is the Chinese news media covers much more news and cultural information about the USA than the USA media covers about China. China has grown and advanced so much over the past thirty to forty years, where as the West in general has stayed much more static. I grew up loving WuXia movies and developed a fascination with Chinese culture (particularly Tang di poetry) as an outgrowth of that. I can remember watching documentaries about Chine from the 1980âs when I was a kid and developing a very outdated view of China just because China has changed so much in the past few decades.
The first time I visited China it was as an adventure tourist to visit Huashan. Huashan is breath taking and it was an experience of a lifetime to do the âlong-plank sky walkâ. I have taken college courses at a Chinese university, and traveled just as a tourist, and through the twist of fate, ended up marrying a Chinese woman. I will agree with you that China is a fascinating place with a rich culture and history that is worth experiencing firsthand.
My own politics leans toward libertarianism, and I am troubled by Xi Jingpingâs autocratic outlook, but I would not judge China just by either the CCP or its current head.
I traveled to China by myself the first time I went, with no help from a travel agency. I spoke a little Chinese at that point but was not close to being fluent in Mandarin. (I had taken two years of Chinese classes at a university, and my Chinese language skills are about as strong as the Spanish skills of the average USA high school student who took a couple years of Spanish in school). I found traveling around China surprisingly easy as a foreigner and had a great time, even though I did not have much practical knowledge about China. Many Chinese people, particularly younger people, and kids, speak at least a little English and love to try out their language skills on a real foreigner. If one travels outside of the big cities English is going to become scarce, but a big smile and a pocket picture dictionary is generally enough to get by.
If a Westerner was interested in visiting China, but was intimidated by the language or âexoticnessâ of China I would encourage them to study the language a little bit and get some good pocket maps of where they want to travel to, then go.
Everyone of them? Curb your racism.
