Version 21.02 - General Feedback

This isn’t a fix for that much but it looks like anti-aliasing is conflicting with photon for some people

2 different ‘Deliver’ buttons in the same industry job window & the fonts are different, for some reason???

And one font looks definitely much clearer and more readable than the other, I suggest going with that one… The 2nd one.

That’s it, I’m done with CCP. ‘User feedback’ = white noise.
Subscription cancelled. DONE.

I completely agree with you, Najala, but I don’t want to regret that I didn’t try to change something because of which I will leave the game and spend energy and time on it.

I hope that this topic will only gain momentum. Now it’s the middle of the week, we’ll see what happens after the weekend.

It’s a wheezing noise)

Another new feature:

if i want to open the sidebar of my cargohold to change to my mining hold i now must:

click on the three dots → click “open sidebar” → change to mining hold → click the three dots → click “close sidebar”

on my little monitor i cant have the sidebar always open.

PLEX FOR A NEW UI

Today i’ve tested photon ui a bit more, so i’ll try to add some words to the previous reviews in a polite way ;p

  1. “Old ui was hindering us from future development”.
There’s a lot of guys that are working in the IT - could you please explain if that is true? From what i know that at least in the web development there are such things as the “frontend” and the “backend”. Frontend - is basically everything what users see and interact with (ui). Backend - all the code behind that which is necessary for all this stuff to work.
So in that terms - they could’ve just changed backend to their liking as many times as they wanted. But it absolutely wasn’t required to change the fronend aswell. Or at least it could’ve been recreated to the maximum proximity to the old looking ui on the new code.
I personally suspect, that there was some “effective” manager involved, who’ve said something like “we don’t need the same, we need better!” The problem is that he only has played in some mobile games instead of the eve before, so knows nothing about what this “better” means for actual eve players.

  2. Ok, to the bright side - Multiple overviews. Yes, that’s a killer feature even if i don’t think that it’ve required all that unwanted changes (see 1). But without huge screen it’s hard to use it to a full potential. At least i want to have an option to reverse vertical positioning inside the overview window. I mean that currently there’s only one possible way of having the overview header with all the tabs at the top of the window when i want an option to fully reverse it. With this invertion it’ll be possible to do something like that (poorly photoshopped):
    invertedvertical
Much less mouse movement between different overviews and much more information at one place of the screen.

  3. Ajustable column sizes in the every tab of these overviews (and different columns of choice). At first i’ve freaked out when’ve saw that, but soon i’ve understood that it’s actually a really good thing. But it’s too unpolished. I’ve wasted a ton of a time to correct all these column sizes in all of my overview(s) tabs when there should be 1-button to “copy - paste” columns sizes from a selected tab to another.
Oh and there’s a bonus - want to change tab orders? Do all the work from scratch. You can rename your tabs and load new filters and brackets to it but not the columns sizes

  4. Huge emptiness between the columns in the overview. Wasted space is a curse of all that photon ui, but the overview size is critical - there’s no place for empty space! Small pic:
    over size
As you can see the new spacing between the columns is around 12px, when it should be enough just 6, which means that we’re loosing 42px (if having 7 columns) just on that seemingly unimportant thing - but it’s an average column size that was lost here. And the old overview header size telling that my calculations are correct.

  5. Almost nothing has been done to the ship preview window from the last time. The skin section is still huge and it cannot be resized for no reason at all.

  6. From the patch notes:

Ok - that’s great, but what about the sell window?
I couldn’t even fit a billion-long number into the only important window there because it’s too small:
    2023.02.15.12.17.42
Btw it’s the minimum size of this window that i was able to make, but meh…

  7. If you’re thinking that there were a lot of wasted space in the sell window listed above, prepare to meet the mighty buy window!:

I just don’t want to comment this ;p

  8. Last but not least: Why on earth have you separated “people and places” into “contacts” and “locations”??? My neocom is shrinking from patch to patch with more and more smaller icons on it, but with less functionality
Btw i’ve found that i could stack these windows, but i still need to open them separately beforehand so there’s no sense in doing that. CCPlease - can you add a feature of making a stackable icon for stackable windows on neocom? Something like this: if i’ll drag “contacts” icon on the “locations” icon (and maybe i had to press a shift key for the trick) - it’ll became a new doubled icon that would open that windows at once and already stacked! Wallet icon on the market orders icon etc. Pretty please?

Ok, enough for now: I hope that my engrish is readable and there’s not too many typos ;p

upd: Some things that i’ve forgot to add, but most of it was already mentioned by many ppl there:

  • There are still too big borders on most of the windows (with all of that compact settings enabled). Look at any “show info” window as an example.
  • Sharp-bright text/icons radiating its brighness right into your eyes. On the mostly black surroundings… Could we had an option to make it less eye-hurting?
  • Carbon theme window (as an example) is overly dark when it is an active window. I think that inactive window contrast/brightness should be used as a default.
  • Glowing cursor
  • Wasted space inside the chat window plus inside it’s portraits section.
  • Wasted vertical space in too many windows (in addition to those buy/sell monsters above).

Etc. In general - there’s too many problems with all that wasted space everywhere. But, as i’ve said before - some work has been done in that direction already. So hopefully we would get some kind of really compact ui eventually. Someday ;p

The glow when you select a window or a tab is too prominent. To make matters worse, you have added on top of that a dotted grid .
When I get up from my PC , I have that dotted background grid printed to my retinas and I’m seeing it everywhere I go for a while. This is just common sense , basic things they teach you midgrade at optics class in physics or biology…

Any UI should be about functionality , information , accessibility . Aestetics should come last and they should not be sight harmful to the user.

I would like to add my comments on the forced UI. IT IS AWFUL .

So much wasted space, lack of colour choice, inconsistent font sizes and highlights.

I have tried it out on a few occasions and reverted back to the old.

Previously I could have up a dozen windows open on my screen and see space, with this it is down to 4 at best.

In good design, form always follows function.

I think (and this is me here, just a player this year) that your first line is the closest.

If it is about refactoring the code base - why does Photon look different?

If you are refactoring, remaking the whole thing, you try to achieve some unity of design while you are at it, all the buttons in the same style, etc.

And this thread is kinda proof of that, eh? But the thing haunting a lot of the Eve ‘structure’ is legacy code. Old code so tangled that making a minor fix can have very unintended consequences. So yes, they ripped it all out, updated to whichever DX is vogue right now and relaunched. Hopefully this new code is more robust and new features can be added without all the Billboards exploding and taking out the Gates.

hopefully

This was the size of my drone tab, before Photon. It was enough to cover 5 drones launched in space, now it covers just 2.

This is the actual size now so it can cover all 5 drones. Why do I need to see the drone icon and why there has to be so much wasted space between them ?

This is the undock button size. On contrast:

That’s the industry start job button.

Moving on to overview, probe and directional scanner:

On the overview, why does it have to be so much space in between entities ? It is double the size , if you compare it to the space between player names in local.

On the probe window, do we need that font size increase? What happen to the recover probes button ? I’ll need a magnifing glass to spot it.

On the directional window, scanning range and angle are now inversed. Why ?

Why the cog button on windows was replaced with the 3 dots one and moved out of the position where it usually was, to a position that’s harder to access ?

In the structure browser window, can we have the services icons bigger ? The icons are too small now and there is already a lot of wasted free space to begin with.
The same design problem is on the industry window.

One of the questions a non-scanner asked was “why do you need the recover probe button to be large?” and the answer is that if you are scanning cloaked on a WH and you hear spooky WH activation noises or see a ship undock then you need to immediately pull those probes in so they don’t show up on D-scan and alert the person to your presence. Having to find the tiny button or missing it because it is so smoll Is Not Helpful Design.

I hope CCP is reading this btw some sort of response saying we are taking your feedback on board would be nice - I’m here so that the 30 active scanners on my team (people not characters) don’t all come in here honking and flapping and causing a fuss so this isn’t a case of one woman whinging.

Unfortunately I use two monitors - but that is one for each character (one is mostly minimised so i can see my mumble and jabber - both screens are a different size, neither of them is large - so dont spread across multiple screens without looking as stupid as Hilmar running scarcity or blackout. just to clarify I would love to have one large screen - but I work for the health service in the uk - and we barely have enough money to live on, so luxury purchases are out

Same but I just quit, just started to retrain with the open university (Brisc should have a look at that for research it’s a super program available to all to the point that they don’t have a high school diploma/GCSEs as a requirement) Even if you have had student loans already they got a number of different options and it’s 100% online now with adobe connect replacing the old tutorial system. People always forget about the OU.

The new colors for the market interface are terrible. I have a lot of issues to identify my own orders now.
The green for orders from the current station and the color now used for own orders are too similar. I’d love to have that rolled back please

This looks to have been solved - so glad that is over!
Thanks

It is harsh on the eyes, would be nice to turn it off.

I agree with you 100% if brisk wants to stick his head in the sand and say hay ccp I represent you not player base so be it
