Purely from a programming perspective, if you make a new mechanic that has lots of caveats and contingencies, it’s a pain in the ass to debug. You have to make sure that it works right under every permutation of circumstances.
You only want to make it work if they have less than 25% hull, and no armor, and no shields, and if they don’t have smartbombs, and if…
Read the lore on them, you literally can not go into warp(otherspace) without them because of the amount of energy required that those PEG’s produce. Warp Core does nothing without that energy
I don’t believe the PEG is what would explode, more likely an energy cascade back into the normal energy reactor from the hybrid capacitor. The PEG only feeds enhanced energy from subspace into the capacitor once it’s given a strong enough kickstart.
@abandonship A power surge into the warp core may phase the ship into pure energy of deep subspace but that’s not going to cause an explosion or impact on ships in normal space.
I vaguely remember CCP saying they wouldn’t want this, but they rather prefer players to die quietly and not to have a “last word” kind of feature. I don’t know where the source for this is anymore.
Anyhow, I do agree with the sentiment and players who lose in a fight should just die without the chance of a final act of vengeance.
If there were something like this created, I think it would be best to have a set polygon box textured with ship parts as shrapnel from the explosion of their dying ship with only the power of a single smart bomb pulse. Size of ship determines size of smart bomb it is atributed to. But with the size of caps and super caps it could get a little dicey with how much power to give them.
That’s the thing. I don’t want it to work. It’s a cool concept from a scifi perspective. It’s a terrible concept for a game that we’re supposed to have fun with.
Going full Pearl Harbor on their butts would not be a fun playstyle, but it would undoubtedly be an exceedingly effective tactic.
Consider a similar tactic, bombers with bomb launchers. There’s a reason why you can’t use 256 bombers in a single bombing wave, and this is it right here.
Armor battleship (lots of lows for bulkheads) with cap boosters and batteries in the mids. You won’t have time to neut them, they’ll blow up around the same time you get a target lock. Even if you do lock in time, they’re literally purpose built kamikaze ships. You won’t neut them in time.
And then there’s “how do we coordinate the neuting of 4-500 battleships over a period of seconds?”.
My smartbomb comment related to getting yourself down to the requisite 25% hull.
You know what would make this idea completely awesome? Have it only do a medium amount of damage. Change the proposed mechanic so it’s a random chance every time your ship explodes. Very small radius, and it happens one tick after your ship blows up. Voila! Instant self-podding. Oh it would be glorious.
