The USA did not have a unified standing army of any significance for over a hundred years, due at least partially of mistrust from the states of the federal government. It was only within the last hundred years that the federal government obtained united, proven, effective fighting forces under its control. In the modern era, this has proved a necessity, and the states, and the people, for the most part are content with this.
