TL;DR
I think it promotes a certain level of civility and maturity. If I lose a fight, yeet myself into something bad or get ganked I say ‘gf’ in local and that’s it.
Its not personal and never should be.
Nothing is more cringe than carebears filling local with gfs.

How about gank victims should send 1 bil ISK to their teacher that ganked them for the invaluable lesson they’ve learned. It is only fair to compensate the teachers for their time, ISK and efforts spent to educate people and improve their gameplay. It should be considered a public service and compensated well.

From my observations of daily highsec life, it is customary for the ganker to post a polite gf after an intense PvP match in the belt, and then for the miner to follow up with death threads or kinky stories about your mother

Didn’t have to study it as I came to the same conclusion on my own. It is just common sense really. 
I would think it’s whatever you feel it is at the time. If one is bitter at losing the ship he might take it as a mockery but if one is okay with it then he’s likely to take it as a compliment or at least not a mockery.

Or in like my case, you could just say GF simply because you actually caught me? That in itself is worthy of a GF.

Little late to the party, but people who say GF are just there to tell others they arent losers, and that they have a GF waiting for them when they log off.
So many people accuse me of having no life when i win battles, so i say “GF” to tell them that i have a girlfriend and therefore a life.
