The meltdown by Ima has amused me, but most amusing of all is seeing the safe space hidden comment butt hurt reporting of what I can only say are mild insults, to report a post for using the phrase ‘village idiot’ is golden, seriously for the HTFU people who dish it out on the forums so often you are seriously weak, seriously dudes you really are pathetic…
CCP doesn’t care what you do, so run along and do whatever you feel you want to, but you can be sure that it is irrelevant.
If they show that they still care about the plan they once had and show in a believable way that they work on it and will deliver.
If they actually tell us why they don’t follow this plan anymore but show that they have a new way forward in a way that I can actually believe this time they will deliver.
If they rollback or stop their insane monetization and stop selling stuff on top of the subscription.
It was ambiguous, because it was not specific.
That’s what ambiguous means.
Specific would be, for example: “Increase HAC MWD bloom reduction role bonus by 25%”
i already wrote this in the op. They started the plan, they improved industry, they started out with stations, but since then it slowed down significantly to 1 station and 1 expansion per year and as I said in the op, it looks like they abandoned the plan. It’s all in the op and you can lookup the Fanfest Keynotes of the last 5 years if you want to know what exactly I’m talking about.
Yeah, I’m not the “buff my special snowflake game or I quit” type, so you have to take ambiguous expectations about stuff they actually talked about.
I was talking to an audience where I expected it would be obvious of what I was talking about. Most responses in this thread seam to indicate that they had no problem with identifying what I was talking about. Anyway, since you where unaware of it I recommend to watch the keynotes of the last 5 years of Fanfests to get a good overview.
Also no one said anything about promises, I talked about a plan for the future of the game outlined by CCP which since became significantly slowed down or was (or just appears to be) entirely abandoned.
2005 player here, been subscribed with 3 accounts for nearly that entire time. And I totally agree with your assessment in the OP.
The decline really started when CCP fired their resident story writer (who used to release bi-weekly chronicles). That was a first indication that CCP was more interested in their bottom line then their game and vision.
Next came the Greed is Good memo, 18 months wasted dev time on a feature that was essentially an excuse for CCP to implement a cash shop and sell 70$ monocles (Incarna). That was pretty much close to the end for me. Luckily, someone at CCP realized in time that their game was about to implode and they actually changed their ways for a time. This went a long way to restore some much needed trust in CCP as a company interested in making a great game and not just maximizing their profits.
The next big downer for me was when they killed their documentation of the game by removing the wiki. That basically showed that they (once again) won’t hesitate cutting costs even if it seriously hurts their customers (and that the summer of rage was forgotten by CCP).
After that, the real failcascade started with the implementation of Alpha accounts and Skill Trading. This basically was a clear indication that CCP were becoming EA (I can’t think of a worse insult at this point). It turned a really great game where long-term investment mattered into some ■■■■-tier pseudo-free-to-play game where you can just drop a few thousand dollars and be on the same level as a loyal fan of 10 years. It also opened the door for the current botting crisis because previously, if you had a mothership pilot (or even just a VNI pilot for that matter) you were unlikely to risk it by botting because you were invested in it and it had “value” (not necessarily the monetary kind - and the only kind that CCP seems to give a fuck about nowadays). Now you just inject a new mothership pilot within 2 hours and continue your botting. By the time the two remaining responsible CCP employees get around to processing the bot reports against you (if they ever do) you’ll have easily earned enough ISK or $ to replace the character and start your botting over. This is basically a death sentence for a game like EVE that always relied on a long-term loyal customer base and not a short-term instant gratification crowd with front-loaded payment model (like games such as World of Tanks and most other f2p titles).
Before Skill Trading, characters in EVE had a true “value”. I felt really happy and also a little proud about my collection of characters that I had invested 10 years in optimizing and min/maxing to fit my game exactly. This feeling of “worth” or “value” was completely gutted and sacrificed on the altar of profit maximization.
For context: I might as well have saved the ~6500$ I spent on EVE subscriptions in the past 13 years and just bought myself ISK from an RMT site, bought SP with that ISK and then I’d be at the same place in the game as I am now. What a kick in the balls for a long-term (and previously loyal) customer…
Last but not least, CCP realized that the community is one of the best “features” of this game so they decided to fire the entire community team to cut costs… no need to elaborate any further on that point.
At this point, I’m only still here because I missed the opportunity to cancel my yearly subscription 8 months back and now I’m just lurking, waiting to see if by some wonder of modern market capitalism, CCP will manage to change their ways, fire the entire upper management and replace them with passionate gamers instead of snake-oil sales men and “bizdevs” with the typical (and highly toxic) EA-mentality.
I can only hope they manage.
And if not then I guess 13 years is long enough to stick with the same game. I can always go back to playing Chess or something.
