Won't someone please think of the Krabs!

I was just talking about spending power.

Working people up to the age of 40 so hard they end up in an early grave, instead of allowing them to have hobbies, is Rule 1.

But yes, spending power is down. In the UK we’ve only just got our pre-2008 wages back, so that is 10 yrs of inflation & debt hitting us. It means less in the wallet for pretty-shinies.

Sure as heck doesnt feel like it tho

There is a lot of truth here. It’s a tough topic that is not directly related to, nor the responsibility of, CCP regrettably. As a game studio, their main responsibility is to be financially stable, and hopefully to look out for their own employees’ well being first.

With that said, I guess much of the world is still trying to recover from the last recession. Here in the USA, recovery happened a lot faster, unemployment is at its lowest in a long time, but most people don’t feel it. Much of it may have to do with housing prices having exploded these past few years which has also caused rent prices to spike as well. People fleeing from expensive, over-populated states caused housing to go up in cheaper states. The expensive states don’t get any relief from fewer people as the wealthy people from cheaper states replace those fleeing. Accordingly, many young people have less disposable income as it is very tough starting out in this environment. Many state governments are trying to address the housing shortage by offering incentives to development, but that could take years to see results. There are many other factors involved as well, but that’s one of the big ones for the USA, and most of us are not interested in reading entire essays on economics from these forums.

CCP will likely have to adapt to these strange times. Much of the population are either unable or unwilling to spend frivolously, and much of the gaming industry has already adapted by turning to the free to play model. And technically, EVE is already F2P, since anyone can have access to the full game if they grind enough to get Omega status.

On a related note, to show how much people are pinching their pennies of late, Fortnite, which is the biggest F2P game currently, made $2.4 billion in one year. But it required 200 million players to do so, at about $12 per person per year. EVE on the other hand made about $50 million in one year with maybe about 500,000 players, by some estimates, coming in at about $100 per person per year. That seems to show most people on an individual basis don’t want to, or can’t, spend much money on games currently. And unfortunately there’s likely no way CCP could copy Fortnite’s model, they would have to increase player population by almost 10x just to maintain their current revenue, not to mention their single shard might not be able to handle that kind of load. But could you imagine Jita local at 10x player count??? :confounded:

I can sympathize with the many people struggling with today’s unusual economy. Maybe CCP will be able to design a new marketing and pricing strategy to adapt. But sadly, until then, only the player can adapt by grinding more, or just floating their sub on and off Omega as their situation permits.

Interesting data. Thank you.

I’m pro-subscription myself, but teh fortnite model would not fly at all. And with Krabbing nerfed ( my original point ) that means players pumping in more cash ( see the decline in market spending power I mention ) or… Leave.

Not easy.

I’ve only been playing 4 yrs, but this is a very enjoyable game for me. However, nerfing ze krabs may well be too much.

Why is it a requirement to krab to enjoy the game? Honest question.

EVE has 5 key activities. PvP, PvE, Mining, Building, & Explo.

Ignoring procrastination on Forums those 5 key activities are why people come here. It’s like half Minecraft half Elite.

If those activtities are damaged then players will start to drift away. Subscriptions will fall.

Now factor in real-world Psychology. EVE has a rep for being hard. So you get your jollies by beating a tough challenge.

If teh challenge is too tough then…

And then there is the bit where you hit some success and can start to Krab. Krabbing is basically a term for mining, ratting, building, selling, that doesn’t involve… Well, it’s more relaxed than PvP. Add a couple of brewskies and it’s a fun night on Comms. Damage Krabbing too much and… People will drift away.

So Krabbing is actually a big deal. You get the stuff to build the stuff to stuff the stuff, and you get to chill a bit too. Well, you did. Then Blackout hit. With the Trigs and…

In a Sandbox losing half of the activities means more people heading for Minecraft. That helps no-one really.

Ok,

I dont use it to mean that.

Thats just PvE and industry to me.

Cor didnt know I was a krab.

Doesn’t krabbing refer to risk-averse null PvE’ers?

As in, whenever local changes they scurry back to their docks, just like when crabs scurry into their holes whenever they are threatened?

I always thought of it like that.

Thats what I thought, but this guy says its indy.

Which leads me to wonder why Blackdog would even effect being able to do that.

All I can say is, in theory, the blackout may cause alliances to shrink their territories a bit, as they would now have to divert manpower to guarding gates and rolling wormholes to get their intelligence network up to a level that is close to what it was pre-blackout. There’s likely going to be some adjustment period till they figure out new strategies, some will take longer than others. But if/when it ever gets figured out, or some new game changes take place, if you eventually are allowed access to the new intelligence network or strategies, some form of krabbing may return, or not. Otherwise, high sec is the next best place for relaxed type game play, although adapting to the possible lower income may be not as motivating.

My own favorite gameplay for revenue got nerfed long ago. Back in 2007-2009 when I last played, mission running was one of the better income streams in high sec. They generally had balanced rewards in loot/salvage/bounties throughout most factions, and it greatly satisfied my OCD by not letting anything go to waste by clearing the entire pockets. There were always uses for the extra salvage/loot. When I returned in 2017, there were only a couple missions left that had decent loot/salvage drops, the rest had been nerfed long before in my absence.

I did adapt by trying blitzing missions, and eventually the new Abyss content. But none were as satisfying as full clearing missions. If the devs push the game in the direction that eventually nudges casual players such as myself out, that is fine. I’ve had some very amazing experiences in this game through player generated content, I just unfortunately don’t have the schedule to partake in some of the greater adventures EVE has to offer. I do root for EVE, as I think the dangerous path is the way they should go, and hopefully it’s still around for when I do have the time to play it even more dangerously.

Mission running has been used by input automaters.
This is bad.

Krabs make stuff with what they harvest.
