A new tutorial

YES😃

The problem is that in Eve, people often use the term “gank” to mean “suicide gank”, which is what happens in High Sec due to Concord response. So those insisting on “only in HS” are probably coming from that perspective.

Why dont we just make a thread about whether or not EVE is mainly PvP and you guys can hash this out there instead

if your making it

How about a thread about “potential risk” vs “actual risk” ?
Or Danger, for that matter.
Like “grave danger?” in A Few Good Men where Nicholson asks " Is there any other kind?"
How many kinds of danger are there?
How many different kinds of risks are there?

Going back to the tutorial topic of this thread.
The new player gets blown up and podded. Does he mainly get blown up or is the tutorial trying to tell him that EVE is PvP at its core?
Was that a “potential risk” or an “actual risk” ?
It certainly wasn’t PvP, was it ?

yes but the circumstances of how we get poded are very odd as we fly an astro and it takes two battle ships to kill us and we have no form of rep this means that when your playing you’ll think that it is much harder to kill you then it actually is

That is true. The SoE corvette in the tutorial is much stronger than it actually is in-game. But once the player starts doing the Enforcer or Soldier of Fortune missions he should quickly realize that his ship is as thin as NASA’s Lunar Excursion Module. It’s obvious enough.

Tutorials are an unnecessary burden for developers and what not and NO PLAYER enjoys them anyway. Players will teach each other how to play and some will figure it out themselves.

Source missing.

Unless you personally know every players on Earth.

I like tutorials, in any game.
Players don’t do tutorials then go in Rookie Chat and ask stupid questions like “How do I undock?”

You cannot help a player that cant figure out how to undock even if you spent $100M on a tutorial for him. If he really wants to undock he will figure it out. I promise!

Ill do tutorials one time or if i havent played in a very long time.

Considering our tutorial explains how to undock. Nope nevermind. Not in the mood to entertain today

If the game you are working on needs a tutorial just for people to get started that says more about you as a game developer than the players imo

This tutorial and NPE bs really need to stop.

You can do that when you take the helm at CCP. Until then, NPE stays.

Effective tutorials help players understand particular game mechanics or teach them to trigger certain behaviour in the game world. Existing literature differs in the definition of in-game tutorials. In some writings, game tutorials specifically describe the informative scenes at the beginning of a game.

Effective tutorials

I like how you put effective in front this way no-one can disagree because of course an effective tutorial is good. But can game developers make effective tutorials and more importantly SHOULD THEY? Is the EVE online in-game tutorial effective? You will probably say yes even if you believe it isnt. Anyway

People figure out the basics themselves, the rest they learn from other players. in game tutorials are simply a waste of time and money and so on

You know better than most developers too.
Have you ever created and distributed a game without any tutorial? Until you do you don’t know.

And you do?

For a man who posts a lot of ideas to keep new pkayers I didnt figure that “Tutorials are unnecessary” would ever be one of them. You are dead wrong there, tutorials are absolutely necessary especially in a game like EVE Online.

In 2007 the tutorial was awful. Really awful. I was lucky enough to apply to the first corporation i saw and they taught me how to play with extreme patience. This was not a good new player experience by any stretch.

When i made this character the New Player Experience had been heavily updated and I thought it was a much, much, much better start for new players. What do you want to do? Heres a questline explaining the basics and rewarding you with a ship.

I think the new player experience is in a pretty fantastic place with the additions of AIR and the Agency.
