My concern here is more that, while there will always be griping about getting more for less, I think CCP is setting themselves up for a fairly toxic wave of angry people because of how they are pitching the Alpha state.
I think that there is a messaging issue and expectation management issue that is working against everybody’s best interests here because people are feeling misled (rightly or wrongly) and look at paying for Omega status as a surprising burden as opposed to seeing Alpha status as a surprising benefit.
Seeing more and more posts like this pop up suggest to me that CCP’s messaging of how all of this works is missing the mark. I could be wrong of course, but freemium games have always bothered me and I can see how that would annoy people who have never played EVE before.

You have unlimited trial, AGAIN UNLIMITED TRIAL when i started it was 14 DAYS only with even worse ships restrictions. I started for 6 times, before i get self sufficient
BUT I, AND DOZEN OF OTHER PEOPLE MANAGED HOW TO GET NECESSARY ISK, WITHOUT BEGGING OR PRAYING CCP.
GET HIGH, I’m OUT, butthurt, I’m on fire, raaage.

It does not matter how CCP monetise their game as long as it does not piss of players. Because if they don’t have any players then no one will play and purchase anything at all.
Currently they advertise it as free2play with a cash shop where you can buy skill points, skins and skill extractors and other stuff but you don’t get access to all game content until you pay an extra 15$ per month.
That is not ok.
They should either have a cash shop and a free2play model OR they should require a subscription. But not both, it is greedy af, and it tells new players not familiar with the game that this is completely pay2win.
This is not the first and not the last such thread. The problem will not just go away

Possibly. It’s not just here on the forums either. It’s happening almost daily in Rookie Help chat. At times we have 2 or 3 people a day rantingt about what they can’t have and calling EVE P2W.

In Rookie Help, we spend more and more time as each month passes trying to explain, just like in this thread, that Alpha is the bonus, Omega is the norm. A lot of the time, Omega is complete news to them. The restrictions are complete news to them. They know nothing about the subscription model, pricing, PLEX … you name it, it’s all news to them.
Something wrong there. I know there are always ‘those people’ but this is happening too often to just point the ‘lol dumb’ finger at every new player.

I think having been here all along, it’s easy for CCP and Vets to take for granted that the Alpha state / free EVE experience is a fantastic bonus, an incredible luxury, something new players will be delighted with, simply because to them, being so used to the subscription model, it is indeed all of those things.
‘I remember in my day’ syndrome with a bit of Apone syndrome thrown in for good measure:
“A day in EVE is like a day on the farm. Every meal’s a banquet! Every paycheck a fortune! Every formation a parade! I love EVE!”
But … apparently that’s not how a lot of genuine new players are taking the sudden discovery that EVE is a 2 tier game with better things locked behind a paywall.
Better communication about what the deal is with far more upfront transparency about the limitations wouldn’t be a bad thing at all, that’s for sure.

The entire game isn’t free. Nor does it have to be.
You just need to know what you are getting in the free version.
I don’t think you should get a single extra thing, but you should at least know what you are getting.
You just want everything you want for free because you want it free.

you mix up anything to fit your view of the world … free 2 play was never free … not in eve not in the brower zoo game and not in any other free 2 play game … somehow they need to make real money to pay the stuff … so you buy a subscrption or not … doesnt matter
if you make a alpha and you skill up to 5 million sp and then you stop skilling … no problem … then its free … surprise … its true … you dont need to buy skillinjectors or skins or anything els from ccp … just play … then it is really free but the model includes that there is anything you want and thats how they make money … thats as old as mankind … not new … just a cool name … free 2 play sounds better then “enjoy a bit of a game and pay rediculus prices for stuff you dont need but we tell you its so huge you really need it” … so if you really belive free 2 play is really free you dont understand how it works …
CCP knows how to monetise there game … they did a good job from 2003 to 2016 and now they changed to a even better way to make money … it works … i really dont know what you think but its all about money … money buys anything …
and thats why not anything is free for alphas … you should give money to ccp … thats why eve is here … nothing else … they dont make it because we are so cool that we should have a fancy space game … they want to make $$$$€€€ punds yen … whatever … you cant change that

Correct… and wrong.
EvE is fair in it’s access. No one is stopped from accessing assuming they can meet the basic costs - computer, power, Internet, account. Much like the computer, the account comes in multiple levels, each with a different cost: my potato vs your top of line rig. Pay the costs you are willing to pay.
Inside EvE, space-life is unfair, because real life is unfair. That’s the glory of EvE. Find a way to spit in space-life’s eye without real life’s consequences.
There are ways to get what you want. Go get them.

I say it’s not free if, for example, you buy PLEKS and I buy from you for the ISK!
EVE gets money for PLEX and you IKS for the same!!!
