An Open Letter to CCP from Current and Former CSM Members on the "Prospector Pack"

Glad to see you are still entertaining yourself. Keep at it as I’m sure you’ll figure it out soon enough. There are clues if you look hard enough. :mag_right:

Plenty to complain about…

Especially when you consider the pack is basically ripping new players off as the pack costs more than its worth. Subscription plus PLEX plus cost of ship bought via PLEX…

If the skills are permanent and the player doesnt have them, it might be worth it.

That said, this pack is bovine excrement.

It is kinda funny though. It’s almost like the major alliances show a bigger interest in keeping their alliance and, by extension, the entire game healthy, than the actual company.

Ripping off newbies remains a bad idea, even if the veterans can easily walk clear around the bad deal. They’ll lose those newbies.

It’s bad for player retention and it’s negative advertisement in general. It’s not a first either.

I really wonder what is going on in the heads of those marketing guys.

I think not. Skills still need to be trained, however one wants to do it either by injectors or time itself there ain’t no avoiding the skill training.
What interests me is how the player will handle the ship in “real” situations in New Eden’s space, especially in a mining ship that will get hunted and pirated and in that case the ship sold in that pack isn’t anything to get your panties wet over.

Considering this is CCP coming in and directly competing against players on the market using a currency the players can’t use (I can’t sell a retriever for RL money), it directly affects me and thus, yes, I can complain about it. And even if I wasn’t directly effected, I could still complain about it because its a direction the game is going I don’t agree with.

Just because you don’t have a problem with it doesn’t mean others can’t voice their displeasure. Feel free to lick boots, but don’t tell others what they can and cannot do.

My main problem with cash for ingame stuff is that it devalues player achievements.

I am talking only in the scenario that ships and modules sold in packs are actually bought by CCP from in game markets. Something I suggested to avoid competing with industrialists.
In that case, does it really matter if ISK appears from thin air? Why should a player care? Why should an industrialist care?

As most know, you can trade real money for ISK and SP right now. That other players buy that PLEX from you and extract the SP doesn’t alter the fact that if you have money you can effectively convert real money into game items (and time!). Each time you PLEX your account another player has had to have bought that PLEX with real money.

So even without the ship packs you can just buy the ship you want using real money right now.

You already enjoy PLEX. No need for me to suggest anything. You all just seem so upset when you already can do what you’re complaining CCP is trying to do. If you were serious about your complaints you would not be playing right now.

You guys don’t seem to consider PLEX as real money for some reason. Maybe you didn’t buy it with $ but someone had to. EVE is already P2W and you haven’t even noticed it. What a great move CCP, folks don’t even notice it.

/signed. Do I see an uptick in catalyst sales? Seriously, CCP has been doing this stuff forever. People may forget that MonocleGate was before PA took over. CCP has enough greed on its own, without needing prompting from PA.

You indeed can do that, but not while avoiding the player market and player industry both at the same time. Which this pack does, as it creates ships out of thin air.

If you buy plex, trade that plex on the market to another player for ISK, then use that ISK to buy a ship from a player you would indeed have bought an ingame ship with real money. But you did use the player market and player industry to do so. Which is fine, as it keeps the idea of the game alive, where the markets are player seeded and the player industry is what creates modules and ships in this game.

The main issue with this pack is not that people can buy ships with real money. The issue is that ships are being made out of thin air for these packs.

Indeed, and that’s why all CCP has to do is buy those ships and modules from the in game markets with each sale.

All CCP has to do is remove the ship from this pack and replace it with some PLEX and instructions on how to use it to buy a ship from the market.

That already exists.

Indeed.

What actual value does an in-game achievement have? Outside of personal pride. That time spent was for Entertainment, there isn’t a prize for finishing first, no gold-medal poduim, no university or Nike endorsement and the mindless grinding isn’t a commandable thing outside of lore or roleplay.
It’s a game. It’s not like going to the moon or anything.

This could’ve been done better IMO this way:

  1. Player goes to Jita market and wants to buy a ship with a fitting.
  2. Player decides they want to buy 5 fully fitted retrievers or something
  3. Pressing “Buy all stuff” button would show the amount of ISK, but also “Buy with PLEX”
  4. The game calculates for you how much PLEX you would need to buy a certain ship.
  5. If player buys with PLEX, they go to the cash store, buy their PLEXies, the game converts them on the fly to ISKies and uses that amount to buy the ship. Regional/Jita average is used for the calculation etc. It basically would just automate the process of buying PLEX and selling it to someone, then buy the ship for you.
  6. Congrats, nothing really changed, you just made it easier to buy ships with PLEX in game. And this way the economy is not getting skewed by Retrievers that appear from thin air, since it uses player made items.

Feels like their marketing is approaching this whole thing wrong. People don’t mind giving money, you’re just giving wrong things in return.

Also not good enough.

What they need to do, is offer one-time deals for newbies at a rate that is BETTER than buying the contents of the packages separately.

That’s basic marketing 101.

As a company you want happy first customers, so they may become regular customers. You go the extra mile. They are doing the exact opposite of what they should be doing. They are not getting more subs this way, let alone precious whales. Terrible offer, wrong game segment and negative advertisement.

The poor GMs within the game do a better job making newbies happy than the marketing guys.

I mean, in that frame of mind, you could just do away with all and any form of industry and player-driven economy entirely, have all ships and items handed by NPCs through quests, and many monetization events like this per month, and call it it day.

This would be a completely different game though, and I mean, if that’s your bag, and you’re ok with it, fair enough. If that’s the road CCP plans to go, fair enough as well.

For the rest of us however … and seeing the reaction this thread alone gives…and the dwindling server numbers … well … tough ■■■■ for CCP I suppose. They chose this.

You’re also doing a very poor job at defending the un-defendable, based purely on the subjective experience of what a “game” should be for everyone else, taking your case for a generality. To be blunt, it’s not worth a damn, in any discussion.
