They also said they would never sell skillpointsā¦
Of course, there are āexceptionsā for VIPās.
I eagerly await Tidi for stationsā¦
So, technically, CCP could borrow a chunk of PAās game engine, appropriately enough called āBlackspace Engineā. The could craft a space/techie environment rather than a fantasy one. Then when you go walkabout, basically your EVE game would be paused and a completely separate engine and environment loaded, with a ported simulacrum of your current character.
In that case you wouldnāt even need much limitations, since it would be a separate client with separate server running a separate game engine. Basically just hand-off code and some database updates for current status.
So, good eye, DMC, for an actually functional WiS/ground avatar mechanic.
The concept has some barriers:
- PA has never said they would share their tech/engine with CCP.
- PA has said theyāre leaving CCP independent to develop their own way.
- CCP would need a whole new team for managing the new code/engine/server, and that needs a minimum return of at least a $2 million a year, if not more. Will WiS sell an extra $4-5 million a year of product?
- Every character active in the ground engine is one less character active in EVE, since it would essentially be a separate side-game.
- Iām still a bit stuck on which activities an EVE player would want to do groundside. Yes, new options are cool, and yes, we can get around the āeven more graphics bloatā issue by having it a separate client/server sharing database info.
A bar, gambling, hanging out with corp mates for a face-to-face meeting, these things only go so far.
For instance, Cryptic/Star Trek Online has had integrated ground-game, public hubs, and corporate/fleet starbases for years. Almost nobody uses their fleet headquarters for meetings, the public hubs (Earth starbase, Deep Space Nine etc.) are mostly just chat-rooms while people trade the market and sit between missions.
I think your concept here is the first workable āhow to implement WiS now with PAā suggestion Iāve seen, but I still donāt foresee enough people playing/paying for it to be cost-effective.
It would be a niche feature that only hardcore RPāers and weabs would useā¦
No activity on zkill means that this character was an alt, for forum posting people do them all the time. Probably will start posting with new alt.
The irony of you saying donāt speak for all of us, then in the next sentence you speak for all of us
So, VR stations then, when the market is ready.
Thanks, itās not far-fetched to envision that happening in the futureā¦
Yeah, thereās always gonna be some hurdleās to jump when expanding game content.
Now about the barriers you posted:
PA also never said they wouldnāt share their techā¦
Now if you look at it purely from a business stance, that policy of allowing CCP independent development of Eve may have had some sort of time limit or performance based clause attached to it which could feasibly let PA take over control.
And since PA actually owns CCP, that policy of non-interference in Eveās development could be changed at any time without our knowledge.
I donāt think anybody knows the actual amount of Devās or investment money needed to do it. Nor exactly what resources they currently have available verses whatās needed to accomplish it.
In fact, CCP could very well be working on it right now in conjunction with PA.
Bottom line - PA bought CCP and the rights to Eve Online as a business investment intended to make money.
The WiS content or as you put it, the āGround Engineā could be tied in with the current space environment, similar to how DUST514 was. Characters in WiS mode buying and selling items in the Market / Hypernet / Public Contracts would also affect / change the āSpace Engineā Market / Hypernet / Public Contracts and visa versa.
And not to mention all those characters in the āGround Engineā would still be listed in and accessing Local chat, just like characters sitting in station do now.
Whether those characters are in space or in station doesnāt matter, theyāre still in Eve and more importantly, hopefully paying a sub.
I believe weāve discussed this before and Iām not doing another lengthy debate about it again. Thereās all kinds of Avatar based gameplay that could be implemented for both PvP and PvE, such as FPS 1v1 / Gang Based Arena Matches, Assassination / Bounty Hunting, FPS missions - Seek and Destroy, Contraband Smuggling, Black Market deals, etc., etc. Could even have Exploration integrated with Hacking in dimly lit subterranean levels of stations.
That was their original gameplay for the avatar based gameplay they explored with some prototyping:
The gameplay premise is simple, players move through our abandoned structures with their fitted Extra-Vehicular Activity suit, using their wits, tools and teammates to deal with the hazardous environment. Some of us are enthusiastically and maliciously killing teammates for personal gain. Weāve even allowed two teams into the environment to really let all hell break loose.

I thought CCP woud patch all humans out?
I do find it strange that CCP continues to release stuff for avatars in the store and as part of game packages given that ānobody wants WiSā.
It ts almost as if there is interest in avatar gameplay.
People just wanna look cool my dude.
No one wants to wander around in stations doing nothing
Everyone wants to wander around in stations doing something.
LOL not really.
People want more to do in space.
You wanna wander around in stations, NMS that way
Thatās why we have ship spinning!
The True End Game content right here! Rendering your space avatar portrait in the coolest ways possible!

What would I do?
