TLDR
What the hell are you talking about? Reddit, in general, is considered toxic AF, and the Eve subreddit doesnāt do a lot to counter this narrative. And thatās even before we talk about how bad group think is over there.
Well, this is true where ever you go, but it matters more on reddit because you can mute those that donāt agree with the group and give a megaphone to those that do.1 Anyway, upvotes and downvotes are frequently more indicative of whether or not a person agrees with a comment, than whether or not the comment contributes to a discussion and brings up valid points/counterpoints for the other side of an argument.
Or to put it another way, the ability to downvote is a moot point if your just going to feed the whiners and bittervets with upvotes.2
The truth of the matter is that toxicity and bitter vet syndrome is a hell of a lot higher on reddit than on the forums, and, forum whiners get a hell of a lot more ship here than they do on reddit. Which is probably because we canāt just downvote a forum whiner. If we want to express disagreement, we actually have to say why (which has the further benefit of exposing our arguments to scrutiny and criticism -we canāt just downvote and call it a day.3)
I mean, Iām just befuddled by your defense of reddit. I would have thought your argument would have been about natural selection being applied to ideas and arguments, or some BS about no one being censored by the ISDās.
1 Note: I will conceded that the normal forum system isnāt perfect. Those who post quickly will have their comments seen by more people, while those who take the time to consider all the implications and nuances of a change/issue/problem will have their posts seen be far fewer people. Naturally, this means that posters prone to knee jerk reactions and poorly thought out opinions tend to get a louder voice than those who like to think before they speak.
2 Note: To be fair, dev blogs tend to attract more forum whiners and bittervets, who then get a bunch of upvotes by other whiners and bittervets. However, this is not the case on most days in most threads.
3 Note: Yes, many people, including myself, will sometimes respond with memes, argumentative fallacies, and ātrollā responses, rather than with proper rebuttals. So, itās not exactly a paradise for reasoned debate, but I still consider it a better platform than reddit.
If you can show me a time when Iāve complained about cloaky camping, Iād like you to point that out to me.
Reddit is pure grade A cancer. Much better to voice your opinion on this forum where it can at least be seen than to post it on Reddit and have it immediately downvoted into oblivion.
No, I meant that reddit has itās fair shair of self entitled garbage and whiners.
Sure, but most of those are very quickly downvoted and donāt make it to the frontpage of the subreddit.
And when it does move off the front page, people like you move it over to this forum to beg for the validation you didnāt get over there.
And anything else the clique doesnāt like.
Social Justice is just a lynch mob with a self applied noble label.
Also the word vote and anonymous setting are a misnomer when used together.
If you can provide a fair point and provide actual supporting evidence, people will usually be willing to engage in actual discussion. But the vast majority is just shitposting which no one really cares for.
I agree and lotās of players here in the forums have said that for a long time.
Unfortunately CCP hasnāt noticed, probably because itās not being posted on Redditā¦
EDIT:
Dev Blogs shouldnāt be included in the amount of posting done by CCP Devās on this forum compared to Reddit, especially since posting Dev Blogs is more of a company requisite to inform clients about current events and future changes pertaining to the game.
Also the actual Dev Blog isnāt attributed to a single Dev, itās attributed to the Team in charge of that particular topic.
And some Devās may even be a designated spokesperson tasked with posting a thread here in the forums to announce various things, like the current Senior Community Developer CCP Dopamine, before him it was Falcon.
I agree, but you have self-entitled players like me that think that CCP ought to read every post of mine. Reddit is cool and all, but the fact that I can be effectively silenced and forever prevented from commenting or posting just because the hive-mind hates the group Iām apart of or the activities in Eve Online that I enjoy is ā ā ā ā ā ā ā ā .
Donāt get me wrong thereās plenty of us beating each other up here but at least you get to have a chance to type your point of view. On r\eve itās just idiots farming upvotes with memes because thereās nothing for them to do in-game.
The āIQā of a mob is the āIQā of its dumbest member divided by the number of people in the mob.
Yep seems about right.
Its been mentioned several times. Thereās a couple on here that successfully quell any good discussion. Dismiss the entire moderation staff I wouldā¦but this is CCP 2020 , who knows WTF they are thinking. I know one thing - if they cared their community manager would clean things up here, in a venue they control lol.
I am not surprised.
This forum is required under terms of service to have a character bazaar. If they could move that to reddit, this forum would be closed down faster than a cargo expanded hauler is scanned at Jita undock.
Itās true that we canāt force devs to post in a particular place, especially in their own free time and i imagine they get valuable feedback from reddit, but I would like the official forums to be the official forums. Itās not uncommon to hear of announcements/information coming from reddit that arenāt on the forums. Or CCP dropping the occasional teaser bomb. And i donāt think itās right to put info like that on reddit but not the forums.
Like the way someone put it recently: One Source of Truth. And that should be the forums.
With regards to toxicity, itās true there is some utter garbage on these forums and ISDās and CCP have their work cut out for them here, but reddit is definitely more infamous than the forums for its toxicity and the way it works does make forum brigading a tactic for drowning out unpopular opinions. Itās kind of a built in band-wagon fallacy.
Whilst the new forums have their own way to suppress opinions via the report function, itās much less common and ultimately down to ISDās or CCP as to what eventually happens with the post.
TLDR- Devs can post where they like, but. Iāve liked the OP because Iād like the forums to be the place for information to be released.
Looking through your posting history is a disgrace. Yet there you following yet another person around and insulting them.
Both are pretty bad, but at least on r/eve people acknowledge itās bad lol.
Heās blunt and heās rude, no doubt about that; although many of the posts he replies to in that fashion deserve nothing better.
Some appreciate him for exactly that, he puts the smackdown on a lot of shite.
