Not a complete cancellation. More like scrap everything and rebuild the base code from scratch on the one engine everyone was recommending CCP to do it on. Unreal Engine 4. The assets were great but the legacy code was horrible and poorly optimized on an already outdated engine (UE3).
It would be interesting to see a list from ccp devs as to what bits of legacy is left to be removed? Which is the worst? Is it this old code thats holding back or slowing game developement? Is it feasable that it after moon mining is onlined that instead of releasing more new stuff letting ccp upgrade and remove the old legacy code even though we may lose features we use now, so when that old code is gone they can add those revamped features back in but it will be quicker and easier as they are not hindered by having to make sure it still compatabile with any old leftovers?
Removing more stuff from the game?
So they are removing something substantial, something what makes this game have more dimensions, and are not even promising, they are hinting that the work will go to 64bit client.
What is this 64 bit client and what it can do what we dont have today? How it compares with more dimensions to the game?
Probably the answer is MOAR SHINY GRAPHICS FOR SH*T YOU’LL NEVER ACTUALLY SEE!!!
Like, missile launcher animations, engines flare, weapon turrets, citadel elevators* and so.
What will not happen is any noticeable improvement in server or client performance, due to the single threaded design of the core. Actually I’d bet a dime that running 64bit graphic engine on single threaded code will prove a challenge to NOT impact overall performance.
*did anyone know that there are moving elevators on citadels…?
The CQ is not substantial, it’s purely optional.
I’d guess they go 64bit, because it’ll help with memory issues and has the potential to speed up their code thanks to the additional cpu instructions and registers.
Hell yeah, and selling horns works too, just look at Planetside 2! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jddY9-mwKbw
CCPlease redivert all CQ development tactical response teams to the implementation of SpaceHonks™
Default everybody’s audio settings to “on” on patch day, with no volume slider for spaceship horns, and set the Windows system volume slider to max in case any players accidentially turn it down so that everybody can enjoy this new feature!
Dixie horns for Minmatar speedy scrapheaps! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zAKksqKR3pI
Foghorns for freighters! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r5BBTwo-_A0
Ride of the Valkyries for swarms of interceptors and/or carriers! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nIS4DZu1af4
All available to annoy other players with for the low low low low low low low price of your dignity.
That actually would make me resub my account, which I just canceled.
It’s a shame that @CCP has no sense what’s good for their core game. I’m wondering what the honk of a titan would sound like?
when you press the honk button in a titan, it just activates the classic AOE doomsday

[/quote]Nah, probably not since it’s currently used by 0% of all players!
@CCP: What happend to the dev time, which was used for the new fireworks, which were sold for 970 PLEX-bucks? Worth the effort? I’ve never seen any of that in-game!
This is a sad day. I don’t identify with a spaceship. I identify with Chance Ravinne, CEO of WINGSPAN Delivery Services. He flies ships, but he also lounges in CQ, writes snark emails, and looks smooth in his orange WINGSPAN jacket.
I hope avatar based something comes back one day. Maybe with Nova. It is a huge loss to the feel and world of EVE Online.
I don’t usually get emotional about space pixels but this makes me legit very sad. I like seeing my characters in station and how strong and sexy they are. Also this feels like a win for the Incarna haters from back when.
I think your reply on the Reddit thread is worth posting here too:
Also for CCP Darwin’s reply to you as well.
I was gonna put some concept drawings together for what i thought would have been WIS.
i guess i can make them look like a damn masterpiece since by that time they’d prolly be open to those suggestions
Hmm… When I try to get RL friends to try Eve, and they actually do spend an evening downloading, installing, getting into a ship following the program basically… The usual thing the say after a while is “How do I see my character?” The answer is, “Well, you really can’t very easily. Your character is a ship, really.” So far, 0% retention rate for any of them. Despite the "Ooo"s and "aaah"s about the beautiful space graphics. They just don’t get immersed enough to want to continue.
I’ve especially seen this thing with spouses or partners of dedicated Eve players. (The player was in early-stage Eve absorption, and tried to bring in the household partner so he/she could understand the pastime and they could play along together). “Hello you all! Is there a way I can I see my character?” Err, not really. Over a course of time, the usual thing is: “Thanks much mates, yer a good bunch. I have to leave corp and Eve for a while. RL commitments are just too much.”
::sigh:: Forget Alphas, if Eve really wants to be mainstream and not intense nerd niche, it’s got to find a way to get people into the amazing New Eden world. Doing tutorials toward undocking a Rifter isn’t going to do it for many. CCP, if your goal is to open Eve to the whole world, you’ll have to do WiS or something similar. DUST was a brilliant concept, sad that it just didn’t work out. Going backward to save some bucks on CQ is understandable, but seems kind of backward and short-sighted.
What are you going to do with those scarce resources anyway? Build more SKINs, that only Eve otaku who are already bored enough to care about how their ship looks in space will even bother to shop?
Straight to the point, this Dev Blog is nothing more than a travesty.
DMC
Though I am a bit disappointed slightly, I have been around EVE enough to know the reasoning and the “issues” that erupted when it first came out. Only been playing for a year in EVE and as much as I would love to walk around a station, the game is a ship based environment so its all understandable.
Never used the Twitch, so its lose is fine by me.
BINGO
The future of EVE is committed to becoming a lesser copy of the past… except for graphics.
Knowing that the art team in Reykjavik was largely responsible for the poor state in which Incarna was delivered (someone expressed his frustration to be working on damned avatars when he had been hired to make prettyglorious spaceships), I wonder how much this little shot in the foot is caused by the same. Maybe someone wants 64 bits graphics for his elevators in citadels and is tired and loathed to see artists wasted in stupid avatars.
Maybe, just maybe, CCP’s development priorities are slanted towards shiny over gameplay, aside of being biased against solo and highsec and PvE.
