An amusing video?
Irony is a thing isn’t it?
And we are all adults?
Isn’t that song about friendship?
Some may see this song as a parody.
Some may see this game as a parody of human civilization.
Some may have a sense of humour, others not,
but the song is about friendship isn’t it? Because killing in a game is not the same as killing irl,
it has a different meaning, especialy in an open world sandbox single server pvp game:
Nothing says I love you like a kill mail
So don’t be surprised if I send you one today
Killing is just a means of communication
Killing is just a means of communication
Some say it’s more the trip than the destination
Killing is just the means
Friendship grows from seed into a flower
Blossoms in this starlit wonderland
We’re doomed to fight for resources and power
So if I shoot you in face, I’m sure you’ll understand
For ten years now we’ve sat and watched explosions
Dancing to the rhythm of our hearts
Killing and dying still stirs up emotions
New Eden is a world where dying is an art
Killing is just a means of communication
Killing is just a means of communication
Some say it’s more the trip than the destination
Killing is just the means
If its about friendship, its a good parody, based on a good parody, that is EVE online.
I don’t understand why you would play this game if you think like that.
Its not a parody of friendship, its about people making friends exploding each other in a pvp game, where they can be enemies in game but share their love for the experience.
Is it because you lost a few ships in low sec and didn’t understand why you were being blown up, so you kept going back and doing it again?
Or you are a pacifist irl and don’t watch violence on tv or play violent video games (maybe eves a good choice as we don’t actually kill anyone, we blow up ships and live forever)?
What is it about people enjoying playing this game and wanting to play it with others?
Haven’t you ever blown someone up without their consent, and had a good long chat with them where they are embarrassed for fecking up and you say yeh I did that and then you have a friend? Or ask the guy who exploded you for advice and get some fitted ships and maybe some tips about industry or mining or whatnot? Or convo’d the suicide gankers and asked if you can scan freighters for them or something? Anything?
The guys who locked me down in a belt in low sec so I couldn’t lock shoot or move, and then casualy with no sense of rush pirated the ■■■■ out of me, well for me they showed me that this was a game for adults who like to think and compete and make their own content. I wish I remembered their names tbh was so long ago.
They are just bad because violence is bad and they do violence?? I don’t understand what your issue is with any of this?
This is eve you can do whatever you want? We can even be friends, but not if you think I’m a sociopath for playing eve or starcraft for that matter (not that I was ever any good at starcraft or eve but you get my drift).
edit: if you aren’t enjoying the game you can quit BUT I’m not going to meme about hello kitty online because I would rather you made a corner of the game that reflects your values and that you continue to play it your way, but maybe with a bit more understanding and empathy towards your fellow players, and a more open attitude to the social side of the game which is shooting and chatting, not just chatting. You know there are null sec and pvp dedicate alliances and corps that are super family friendly and don’t even allow swearing on coms. I’m sure they are still going to shoot you in low sec or in their space though.
For hilarity, for drama. When people forget its a game and try to make real friendships and then they are cheated out of whole their corp assets. Its ridiculous.
Or when somebody tried to gank me in high sec and forgot its not a lowsec, so his Loki was blown up by concord, and I took all his stuff.
But some people do make real friends. And others lose real friends when they play this game together (or poker or any game with real loss).
The game doesn’t ENCOURAGE deceit and treachery, it just allows them, that’s why friendship is important isn’t it? And there are plenty of corps that don’t implode that way, I wonder why?
edit: yes its great when you do that I nearly lost a ship doing the same thing but realised at the last minute no way a hulk is just mining in a low sec pipe. I am sure if I had pulled the trigger the hulk pilot would have had a chuckle and looted my wreck, I thnik I would have fallen off my chair laughing and convo’d him to ask advice about my skill plan for getting my at in a hulk, as this is one of my goals for the future. So a real missed opportunity for both of us, oh well.
Real friendships happen too, I dont have anything against real friendships. But its also a game, a parody of life.
A game is not a parody of life, its a game. It doesn’t spoof mock deride or ironically comment on life in any way,
But the interactions that take place happen in the real world don’t they? But a part of the real world called a ‘game’ with rules and mechanics that define what is allowed and what isn’t withn that game.
We are interacting now aren’t we, its not a parody, it doesn’t mock spoof or deride real interactions, it is just another form they can take.
Just as sharing exciting pvp in a game, can make ‘killing’ a form of communication, and cement friendships.
What about the time you can restart life again and again, ganking everytime someone and nobody can do anything about that? CONCORD is a mock of a law enforcement. Mechanics are a mock of a real life. It is mock of a big part of human life, when death happens and is a tragedy, here it results in corpses that people adore and gather for lols. I think its parody.
well that’s your point of view, it seems to apply to all video games though, which renders it less inciteful and more of a trueism,
but only if we accept that everything you have said is really the case.
Since when did real law enforcement prevent crime, they catch the criminals and send them to the courts who punish them, at least concord arrive in time to destroy the perpatrators, at least they get there on time. Mechanics aren’t a mockery of real life, they are game mechanics to make a pvp game which works and is playable.
And yes real death is a tradgedy, real bullying is terrible, real harassment is a crime, but does this make a game which uses these elements a parody or a joke? How do you feel about the theatre, action films, boxing, poker all of these entertainments and games which use aspects of real life for dramatic effect/entertainment. They are not all parodies are they?
How is one player building a graveyard of thousands of corpses and memorials for dead players mocking life?
Perhaps some of these players who communicate with explosions have real life experience of loss and death and violence and this perspective allows them to see the difference between a game and rl?
Perhaps for all this talk of parody you aren’t getting the most out of this GAME.
Grave for immortal capsuleer is rather funny concept when you think about it. So people are actually trying to fill game with real stuff. One group builds the graveyard, the other is desecrating it, parodying Jihadists and religious fanatics. Who gets it right?
Or its emergent gameplay in a virtual world which is really quite interesting, I just don’t think ‘parody’ cuts it, and they rebuilt it didn’t they?
Whatever happened, whatever was destroyed, groups formed and set and made objectives happen and worked for something, as I said, the killing was just the means
The goal isn’t what you make or destroy, its what you get from the process of setting those goals and working towards them.
It isn’t real, though it can feel real and have real consequences, and it isn’t a parody but it can be used to parody anything, its a game (like risk or starcraft or poker or chess).
The truth is parody doesnt matter. The real stuff matters. EVE isnt real when it comes to the game, but it is real when it comes to people.
We should talk about people.
Not sure what you mean here?
Are you agreeing with me?
Parody can matter, it can be a really powerful form of political comment for a start.
Of course eve is real, but its a real pvp game, so ‘killing’ in the game does not have the same emotional and rl effects as killing in rl. Because its a game.
The emotions we feel when we play are real, that’s the draw for most people the sense of real loss because those pixels represent work and time,
but ruining someone work in a pvp game does not equate to ruining some ones work in real life because in a pvp game that is the way we play the game-
as in the poker example, we consent when we buy in/undock.
We are not really flying space ships you see, and we don’t really die or kill, THAT is why we can laugh about it and say ‘killing is a means of communication’ and HTFU, because of love and a desire to share and make content. That doesn’t parody life, it celebrates it.
So you dont see hilarity of that? So why they are killing? Some may kill for glory, some for padding their killboards, some for fun. Some to make friends.
So celebreting life by killing? Well that is one more reason to kill someone, lets kill ourselves, kill yourself in a gank and be happy at last. That is like I would hear Bender from Futurama.
No celebrating life by playing a game together where we fly pretend spachisps and don’t even have to pretend to kill our opponents because they are immortal in game, as are we.
Is it just the word ‘killing’?
There is no hilarity, they do it because its an enjoyable rewarding game I guess,
like they aren’t actually killing anything.
Irony is still a thing right? I didn’t get the memo or something?
edit: just change ‘killing’ to ‘playing at killing’ or just ‘playing’ and it makes sense doesn’t it?

Who determines what emotional harm is? Different people are going to react to the same stimulus in different ways.
That is exactly why CCP don’t have set “rules” about bullying and acceptable behaviour but will investigate if a complaint about X person or group is made.
Bullying and other such behaviours are a very grey area in all walks of life, as you said, what one person can accept as a bit of fun can be totally offensive to the next person.
Quintessen
I want to see CCP deal with abusive behaviour where someone’s desire is to cause emotional harm to another person
They will - You need to make them aware of the situation with as much proof as you can gather. Keep in mind, “he said she said then did” is not proof - You want related mail, chat logs, any external links used (if any) and if it involves more than one perceived victim or perpetrator, names of all involved.
Consider - People “act out” in certain situations and sometimes they overreact by saying things they would not normally say. This makes drawing the line between bullying or harassment and an outburst difficult to define but if you believe you are a victim of someone who just wants to victimize you - Contact CCP support staff…
NB; From a personal experience that occurred a few years ago, complaints are taken seriously and handled very professionally…
No, its actually killing. Dont bend it. Song is clear about that.
And it is hilarious. Just think for a while how it looks in the game and how it looks in real life. Its completely opposite.
We dont have infinite lifes in reality, but still some people are behaving like they would have them, like they would play EVE of some sort. Joke is on them.
