Looks like another player learned the hard way that Upwell Structures are completely designed to be run by large corps, to be protected by large defense fleets. For small- or solo-operations, POSes still are the way to go. A well armed Large POS laughs at 10 Ikitursas an repels them entirely on it’s own. And with just one POS gunner online, those Ikitursas will even be turned into wrecks one after the other.
Yes, it’s imho a terrible fail design for the Upwell Structures, but well, thats how CCP wants it. And yeah, it’s off-topic here. ^^
tldr: No Exploit, just a lack of knowledge from the Structure Owner.
They have only removed the economical benefits, the ability to run reactions and to build capitals on them. The rest, Defenses, Manufacturing normal items, ships, researching blueprints, inventing T2 copies etc.. works fine.
And hopefully it stays this way. Because Upwell Structures are ridiculously bad at fighting.
No it isn’t, a large POS deflects even 10 Leshaks with ease. A well set up POS has like 30 Jammers online, which will all jam random Targets, and with only 10 opponents present that means most of them will be permanently jammed. And 10+ Dampeners will make sure they need to lock longer once the ECM effect ends, so they are probably jammed again before even getting a new lock an the rep cycles through.
That means they woud need to tank the roughly 3000dps from the tower’s guns just with local reps, which is pretty much impossible for a T1 battleship to do. Not even counted that POS also have heavy neutralizers that can easily make a battleship cap dry pretty soon.
There are ways to deal with such a tower, but 10
Ships in HS is tough call, especially when not knowing for sure if the owner can log in Combat Ships and/or Gunners. And since such a large POS can have well over a 100 million eHP, youll be sitting there tackled for several hours, even in high DPS ships.
Oh nevermind. I missed the part that it would be a POS, I thought you were suggesting him to use Fortizar instead or something.
Nobody will attack online POS in highsec, it is way too annoying and useless. Hell nobody attacks offline ones either. In my beginnings I tried to went for easy kills and thought that POS is something that would be easy to get on my KB. We used 2 max DPS Nightmares shooting this faction Large Control Tower for 24 hours AFK and it didn’t die since there was server reset. After server reset HPs recharged (probably not fully, but it made us give up). I know that triglavian ships are better at ths now when they exists, but still. It also drops no loot (talking about offline one where are no hangars or laboratories) and not even wreck that could be salvaged.
Their resilience was part of the design concept to allow even smaller corps and groups to have them, because - unless you stepped on someones toes or someone big wanted to have that moon spot - you were left alone. Nobody wanted to waste hours over hours and/or commit capital ships (in Lowsec or 0.0) just “for the lulz” or to annoy you in a drive-by shooting that would take so long, you could easily be third-partied. The todays Upwell Citadels are reinforced within half an hour at worst and don’t even shoot back if the owner isn’t logged in. And even if the owner logs in, it can’t fight properly.
Unfortunately CCP doesn’t understand that from this “fortress” concept of POSes the whole game benefited, since they allowed smaller and midsize corporations to thrive and grow and not being vasalls (paying to rent structures) or just prey for the bigger groups (being erased on sight by the next best roaming gang).
Maybe at some point someone explains to CCP how much they have hit themselves an axe into their knee with the current Citadel Design.
Everyone is a PvP player in EVE.
There are those that actively avoid PvP, but they’re still eligible for surprise PvP at any time in any area of space. It’s up to them and their skills to avoid PvP if they so desire.
EVE = Everyone Vs Everyone.
Your corp became war eligible the moment it anchored a structure
You’ve learned a valuable lesson both as an individual and a corp, and it was fairly cheap, though could have been cheaper if you’ve made your research beforehand
You’ve made some active players happy by feeding them some structure killmails
This in not entirely correct… there are no bonuses for research and manufacturing with a POS anymore. It cost more in time/fuel than it does to pay the station charges. You still pay the higher system tax in a pos in hi sec.
It is correct, because you can move your POS easily to a system where the SCI is pretty low, anchoring it very quickly and start all the jobs with a very low tax rate. Basically switch systems once every 30 days, it’s around an hour of work once a month.
And of course you run enough jobs to greatly outweight the fuel costs. I had a HS POS network for years, running a hundred research jobs at a time. The fuel costs absolutely don’t matter at this scale. If is obviously not feasable for just researching a single BPO…
