Griefing ruins the game

Nice definition.

Too bad a lot of people will give you confused looks when you’re talking about a supercarrier being used for ganks.

Also I guess I’m a ganker, yay! Even though I never set foot in high sec…

I am not sure about the confused looks, many people have played other games and know how it is used as a gaming term.

Well if you use overwhelming force to take out someone giving them no chance at all then you are ganking. Haha you nasty ganker you.

I could use it just for hisec like some people, but the OP was ganked IMO based on the general word use. Not sure if podding him was griefing, it was however nasty and annoying, but that is WH space.

I suppose I could just give up and use the word ganking for hisec suicide ganking then.

NB. I put a NB. on my first post, so from now on I will use ganking in that context within Eve. Makes things easier I guess.

I guess I can just use blobbing for everything else when outside of hisec, is that fine? But what do I use for the Super example, maybe there was a word specific to that…? Was it fishing, oh well.

Damn just realised how pedantic this is. Sorry…

I like how Dracvlad links a definition…

“Ganking is the process in which a group of charecters gang up on one or more players that do not have a chance to defend themselves, Or when one high level player does the same action to a player way below his or her own level”

…Which pretty much invalidates as “ganking” EVE’s most notorious examples of ganking, as (1) EVE’s ganking is often done by just a single player, (2) against targets that do have the chance to defend themselves, and (3) the players being ganked generally have more skill points and/or are flying more advanced ships than the ganker.

I wonder how long Dracvlad is going to keep presenting himself as an absolute lunatic on these forums, until he digs his hole so deep that he feels he either has to quit them permanently, or at least roll a forum alt?

Let me reiterate:

ITT:

UFC fighters beating up grandmas.

Is this really your finest hour? I think the word I’m looking for is histrionic.

It can’t be griefing by definition. And PvP, by definition, includes all player competition. Even if you think that competition was unfair, it’s still a competition.

People misuse ‘grief’ to make an emotional appeal to push a personal agenda.

Grief, by definition, means using game mechanics in an unintended way.

A griefer or bad faith player is a player in a multiplayer video game who deliberately irritates and harasses other players within the game, by using aspects of the game in unintended ways, such as destroying something another player made or built.

Exactly.

To qualify as griefing, a player must be using aspects of the game in unintended ways to annoy other players

This is the issue, in that in Eve it is intended game play to destroy something that other players made or built.

So I really don’t think that this incident was griefing either.

How many years has this game been active?

And you’re bantering about the definition of griefing?

For real?

yea

Cause peeps use it wrong all the time. Which you would have known if you read the topic

I can remember someone hurling all sorts of abuse at me in local while in a WH once they spotted my probes on d-scan, they said some terrible things about my mum. I stuck around for a while after I had my WH connection scanned because I found their impotent raging in local hilarious. It was one of the best days I spent playing EVE.

Semantic bullets really are the lowest DPS.

When thinking about Eve, remember you can buy drink containers from their licensed store for holding other players tears. I think that indicates something about what folks intend for Eve.

I think EVE is great for what it is.

The attempts to… pretend that it isn’t what it is are annoying.

Wear the label. You’re playing one of the most unique games available.

But they don’t want to, that’s the thing.

Why so you think not?

I don’t understand the complaints about in-game verbal griefing. There is a function to mute people…practically every MMO has such. Use it.

Ahh. Interesting.

More deflection and excuses, but in a separate thread to back up your other statements.

Interesting

“That player is threatening to kill me in real life, what should I do?”

“You can just mute them if you don’t want to listen to the threats.”

“But will it make them kill me in real life any less?”

“No. Have you tried reporting them? They’ll get banned by the developers.”

“I could, but would that at least make them kill me in real life any less?”

“Probably not.”

“So then what should I do?”

“I don’t know. Maybe try not doing the things you’re doing that make them want to kill you?”

“But I’m just playing the game…”
