Grim present, dark future

,

You know how sometimes someone will state some roundabout conspiracy theories, while using very vague language that allows them to essentially not commit to what they’re saying but rather guide others to come to the same conclusions naturally? That’s what this sounds like to me. Like “a little birdie told me that Steam support has on at least two occasions told users complaining about the problem to hurt themselves.” Hurt themselves how? By telling them to perform some tests and submit a bug report, or eat the pointy end of a shotgun? And then there’s the “there have been a couple of changes made which removed workarounds that users had found to let them keep access to their games.” Like, what’s that supposed to mean? Has evil Valve been banning epileptics from their platform? Those bastards!

I’m not really buying this story, because Valve has a pretty good track record of fixing bugs and issues with their platform. I sincerely doubt that Gabe is trying to wage some kind of genetic cleansing on people who can’t look at flashing lights. Calling Steam “a platform that’s been known to be harming some of its users for 3 years now” is kind of disingenuous, and sounds like a “single-issue voter” type of deal to me.

All of the other PC platforms are either much more predatory than Steam (e.g. Epic Games Store, Ubisoft, Origin), or are minor indie platforms. The only one I can think of is GOG, and that has pretty much the same games Steam does. I’ll take a look and try to find some game recommendations later, and you can search for them on the platforms you like if they appeal to you.

That was a rational and well-intentioned response based on common sense that ended with a genuine statement of helpful intentions. Ma’am, this is the Eve forums, we don’t do that here. Reported.

Love me some GOG.

Finally found all the Quest For Glory Games and the 2 Dark Sun games.

Good times

That’s fair. I’ve seen direct evidence provided to support the claims (and proof that it’s been provided to Valve via their support platform). It was shown to me in confidence though, and I don’t have something I can share publicly to support the story, so without that evidence, it’s totally reasonable for you not to take it at face value.

But this is objectively false to a hilarious degree if you look at anything more recent than 5 years ago (and you have to skip some problems older than that too).

And at this stage, I’d take Epic off this list. They’ve HAD some pretty serious issues, but are pretty quickly turning into what Steam used to be, and still has people arguing they are. And their support is on par with what it’s reasonable to expect in any industry other than gaming, which is a massive advantage over even Valve, whose response times are generally regarded as some of the best in the industry at “only” a couple of days, sometimes 3 over a weekend, while Epic’s response times are measured in HOURS even on major holidays.

It would be more productive to do a google search for an obvious set of keywords like “steam update migraine epilepsy” and find some of the discussions (including some on the Steam forums) about the issues than to continue derailing this discussion with an argument that’s even worse than you accused mine of being 2 posts earlier. Way to be the bigger hypocrite btw.

Back on-topic… still hoping to see OP do a better job of explaining what problem they think they’ve identified, why it’s a problem that needs a solution, how it’s relevant to the game’s playercount, and how their proposed “fix” addresses it. Because… so far all those things are missing.

All i see are carebears complaining
As with everything else there ain’t such things as “fair” fights. Unless it is a carefully staged duel with lots of rules of engagement, you’re getting murdered one way or another. Nobody in here would gimp themselves for the sake of fairness, if there are advantages to be had you may very well be sure your opponents would stake everything in their favor.

But this hasnt occurred in New Eden.

Society is larger and more robust in EvE than RL by a gigantic magnitude.

Ah…the famous case where the person claimed ( on Steam forums…where nobody ever has to prove anything ) getting epilepsy even when the Steam window was closed or not visible on the screen, and who then allegedly ran double blind experiments with multiple doctors who ‘confirmed’ it all ? I have a bridge in Brooklyn for anyone who actually believes the story.

I don’t see what that has to do with the thread, but I assume the service is down until CCP fixed the security issue about transfered characters that was recently found.

Scary ■■■■!

So you blame it on the customer? Here’s a pro tip, bro: don’t start a business. You’ll waste your time and fail!

There’s a toxic attitude right there. You’re always salty and negative. Who hurt you?

To be expected. I was thinking they would drag it into at least May 2023, to celebrate 20 years of the game’s existence, but closing shop before that wouldn’t surprise me, given the current state of affairs.

It has everything to do with the “grim present” part. Services not working is a confirmation of the grim present. And it foretells pf the dark future. I hope that clears things up for your thick head…

I like the dark and the things that happen in the dark

Yes, as it is the customers who have changed the game for the worse

No one? This is a vidya game bruv  If you don’t like it, HTFU LOL.

I cannot fathom why you peeps cling to pixels so hard.

That’s not how businesses work. Underperforming assets are likely to be sold rather than destroyed, and if they are it would happen regardless of some arbitrary date

Just remember, your “grim present” today is future you’s “good ol’ days” tomorrow!

Standard Lucas ad hominem and twisting of what someone said.

As a matter of fact, I actually have the transcript of the original complaint. It’s a complete joke…very demonstrably so.

( and standard Lucas…already posting a reply within 2 seconds of me posting this…lol ! )

He believes everything he reads on the interwebs

He is a boomer after all

Well…the original issue existed only on the Steam forums…literally one person’s postings. Of course, nobody ever lies or exaggerates on forums. The way it’s been presented here is dishonest…so it doesn’t surprise me that Lucas pops his head up.

I’ve seen over 30, and enough talk about it from multiple sources to have prompted a Steam moderator to create a dedicated thread to discuss it, so… you might want to pay slightly more attention to the information you’re finding. Given the info you mentioned, you’ve almost certainly found a comment where earlier posts on the Steam forums had been linked, so maybe try looking back at the older comments in those. From before the person you’re talking about even found out they had an issue.

And for reference, some of the paperwork I’ve seen is documentation of the double blind testing that you mentioned. It’s got a lot of private information in it, which makes it problematic to try and share publicly, but I was fortunate enough to know the people involved so… yeah, I’ve seen what happened there. There’s legitimate reason to say that Valve knows what they’re doing, whether it’s malicious or just incompetent is the only question left and I’m leaning toward the latter while the people I know who are affected directly tend to be more willing to suspect intent behind the harm it’s caused. For what seems like obvious reasons, given human nature.

Again though, I don’t have anything definite which I’m actually able to share for you, so if you want to not believe what you’re being told, that’s perfectly fine.

Also, I WAS going to drop it but since you really think it’s worth dragging it out, I guess now you have some more information. And directions for where to go to prove your easily-falsified claims about the situation wrong. Have fun with that. o7
