Is Hisec ganking good for the game?

Yes, i have in-game logs and everything… and eyewitnesses… that doesn’t matter… It’s just very surprising to hear these…its second time today… . what I have to learn… all these things you guys are talking about. I just removed the post up there because what these players telling was very disturbing for me.
All normal nothing wrong to say these. That explains maybe why I do find all these things very absurd

I was taught this way But its eve all these “normal”

Depends on the type of gank, but freighter ganks even with the multi-boxing that occurs is still a fairly organized gank-op that requires a fair bit of planning.

Personally, I would like to see multi-boxing reigned in a bit; it’s stupidly prolific in Eve Online.

Well… I mean its promoted by CCP, so it is intended.

Sadly, yeah. Multi-boxing rarely ends up being a “good” thing for a MMO though; mostly because it’s not something designers plan around from the start so it opens up all sorts of abuses. Anyhow, it is what it is; CCP is a company and if they can’t capture more players they might as well try and tap the remaining players for more.

Perhaps, but in a game where you cant trust anyone and losses are permanent, the only people you can trust are your alts. Usually.

And CCP has made so so very much content only accessible for groups that it very much looks like its not something that has a hope of ever changing.

That said, there is a finite limit to it, and there’s only so many alts one person can control doing a difficult task.

Certain activities scale with multiple clients better than others - such as industry/science slots, mining, and killing NPCs to a certain extent. EVE is notoriously easy to multibox - even sans input broadcasting - so the “solution” would be to make these aforementioned activities somehow more demanding on cognitive bandwidth.

In WoW I would just input broadcast and set hotkeys so that my 5-box party basically became one giant singular character. In EVE broadcasting is banned. If flying a ship was as input intensive as playing a traditional MMO character, we’d see a lot less “active” multiboxing.

only dumping this here because there hasnt been a good “You should be able to opt out of PvP” thread in a while.

You know is futile, don’t you?

I’ve read through this entire thread, and I have questions.

Are y’all talking only about the big Freighters like a Charon or does “freighter” also include smaller ships used for hauling?

If the latter, could someone show me an example of a badger that’s fit “properly”? I see comments in many threads about ships getting ganked with no tank and not being fit properly. I’m not sure where the line is when I should quit worrying about agility and focus on tank. I’m assuming that anything bigger than a cruiser should go for more tank instead of agility/align time. I mean this in the context of hauling specificity.

I don’t usually move a lot of stuff, but I’d rather know how to fly properly in the event that I’m carrying a lot of valuables.

And please, don’t change things to make hisec “safe”.

There is no real “proper fit” as such. There is always a trade off (eg. more tank == less cargo, more shield == bigger sig radius, more armour == less agile, etc.).

There are fits that in comparison to the next guy, might make you less likely to be ganked, or might make it difficult for a high alpha ship (eg. Tornado) to gank you on a station or gate.

Those are mostly the ones that are referred to as properly fit, however it is still gankable.

As a general guide:

  1. more tank will make you less attractive to solo gankers if your tank exceeds the EHP they can burn through for a given CONCORD response time
  2. more tank may make you less attractive to a group of gankers compared to other targets that are around at the same time
  3. less value in your cargo may make you less attractive to gank, but that isn’t always true

There is however, no gank proof fit and just as gankers scout, scan and do their prep to be able to kill a target, you can also do your prep to make you less gankable.

Fit is just one aspect of that.

Some broader guidelines:

  1. stay away from major trade routes where possible
  2. choose the right ship for the job (ie. don’t load a T1 hauler up with expensive blueprints. They don’t need that much cargo)
  3. carry the minimum value cargo compared to the cost of ships it will take to gank you. If the value of the droppable fit + cargo is more than double the cost of ships needed to take you out, that statistically will be profitable to gank
  4. check zkillboard for each system on your route and see what kills have been occurring in the last hour
  5. if on a major trade route, don’t take point 4 as much more than an indication. Go fly the route and check, if you are worried about the loss hurting you
  6. Use MWD-Cloak trick as much as possible (this is still no guarantee of safety)
  7. Check gank-intel and antigank chat channels (I haven’t been in these for a while, so not sure if these are still active)
  8. If you have an alt, have them scout and web for you
  9. set insta-dock and insta-undock bookmarks at all major trade hubs
  10. don’t autopilot and don’t go AFK while hauling (dock up if you need to stand up)

There are many other things you can do also, but these are a start.

Finally, if you do lose your ship, don’t lose your ■■■■. Offer a ‘gf’ in local and keep your emotions in check.

That is easiest to do if you stick to the golden rule: Don’t fly what you can’t afford to lose.

If you can’t stick to the golden rule, then don’t haul it yourself. Contract the haul out to someone else.

For real. However, I get very angry at myself if I screw up and lose my ship to a NPC in a mission.

I think would be a lot fewer whining(ganking/nerf/buff/hisec/etc) threads if more people did this.

It’s not often I need to move much, usually it’s all my ammo and different shield hardeners. So far I haven’t needed anything bigger than a badger, but I’d rather not be an easy target while in hisec. I already get nervous enough when I can’t stay aligned while running a site or salvaging. I’m also not familiar with armor tanking.

Random question, that could impact my opinion here. Is it possible to go from Jita to Amarr by:

  1. Staying in high sec
  2. Not traveling through Uedama

I thought this used to be possible back when i played 2 years ago (you just had to make 30+ jumps to do it)- but it looks like, as of now, the game has completely removed that option.

Hisec ganking happens to many types of ships, so it is not just about freighters. However there is a difference between the ships in terms of their vulnerability.

A freighter is just a whale that has a choice between cargo expanders and bulkheads, and sometimes resistance modules. if solo, but if you have two accounts then can be setup for fast warp with web assistance. Whereas T1 haulers, and DST’s can be fit to argument their tank obviously, but more importantly to do the MWD cloak trick, so alignment and fast warp is really key here as you have noticed.

The issue is of course a loss of hauling capacity. So if you fit cargo expanders you lose survivability.

Tanks should be passive buffer obviously, because the tactics gankers use are different for each type of ship, ganking people as they arrive and leave Jita 4-4 station is the best way for cloaky haulers and the like, though I tended to remove stuff from 4-4 in something heavy buffer fit and switch to the cloaky hauler at another station.

Another thing I did was look for hisec WH’s, but you can also place DST’s at key areas and move the stuff through in smaller chunks before moving again with the freighter.

It is not so much that hisec will ever be safe as there will always be people ganking because it is so lucrative. So you should not worry about that at all. The balance of the game is what is important. And there have been many buffs to ganking despite people claiming otherwise.

Maybe we should setup travel windows into uedama ,so everyone who is bothered about losing a ship travels in one jump. A bit like the wildebeest in Africa crossing the river full of crocodiles , maybe one freighter will die but not a dribbled all day long.

Yes, telegraphing the times when people who don’t want to be ganked, will be travelling through Uedama is a stellar idea

If only EVE wasn’t a 24/7 (almost) game and if only most people cared for their safety (then they probably wouldn’t be like wilder beast to begin with).

But want a grand site gankers , anti-gankers , haulers and the odds of getting through must be higher working on the wildebeest scenario.

They should give me the gate control key hehe

The odds of getting through for the average hauler are already near 100% as it is.

We only hear about the unfortunate few, not the masses that get to their destination safely.
