Jita Direct Trade Scams and the EvE community

This is my first and last post for eve forums.
I’ve been playing eve for around 3 months, and have always and only ever mined. In many ways, I am still very new to this game. I’ve eaten loss after loss after loss, and been able to come back from it.
Today, I lost several billion isk from multiple incidents. The only one that irritates me, however, is the direct trade lag scam in jita.
I was trying to sell a procurer bpo for much cheaper than market value anyway, at 1.2 billion. I got an invite to conversation, and a request to direct trade. Serenety Fireslayer put in the 1.2b isk, then closed the trade once i put the bpo in and hit accept. He had the blue checkmark, suggesting he had accepted, yet was able to close it in the moments it takes eve servers to talk to my computer.
It threw the bpo back into my inventory, and he opened trade again. This time, he put in 1.2b but changed it to 1.2m while i was dealing with jita lag, exactly as before.
I have an i5 @ 3.3 ghz, 16gb ddr4, a titan 1080i, and my isp delivers 1tb dl speeds. Jita lag isnt due to local resources, but due to server sustainability. EDIT: since it obviously triggers some of you, I am not a residential customer. I run a business and generally like to mine while i am doing other things in life. I shouldn’t need to explain that, since the post is about such obviously different subjects, but here we are.
I mention in jita local that he scammed me, and i’m told by multiple players that he’s well known for doing this, while other players are telling me it’s a clear violation of CCP rules. I’ve made a support ticket regarding this incident, but if any of my previous interactions with CCP GM’s are any indication, absolutely nothing will be done about anything.

So here’s where I’m at.
The fact that so many of you will defend the scammer and call me names or otherwise insult me speaks volumes about who you are as people.
You’re playing a sandbox games with few rules, and you display exactly who you are. You may pretend to be an actual human being when you’re outside of eve, but that is just a symptom of being a sociopath. You have serious mental illness if you think it’s ok to steal from people, especially by manipulation of game mechanics.
CCP should feel ashamed for creating and empowering a community which exalts that type of behavior. We have prisons full of people that act like eve players do, except they did it in the real world.

Scamming and betrayal are part of the game, but great success can be achieved through cooperation and trust - it’s part of the tension that makes Eve a fascinating game to play. If you’re trading with someone you don’t know - use a contract. It costs 10K ISK and can’t be scammed (as long as you take the time to read it). If they are unwilling to use a contract - it’s a safe bet they are scammers!

Station trade is only okay for donations or trade between alts. All the rest should be done through contracts. And even then you need to be really carefull as most of the Jita-locally spammed ones are scams. It is mostly required to use 3rd party websites to verify real value of items and even then those sites occasionally are wrong with some items.

It is more like anarcho-capitalism than sociopathy but in EVE online not everyone plays with their pants on.

-2/10, serenety You must be pretty bored, jita local down?

Good luck with that one though… I’ve yet to hear anyone breaking much more than 100 gb speeds on a consumer-level connection.

Also:

So you fell for a scam. It happens. Get back up, dust yourself off, learn from the mistake you made and move on.

You need to come to the United States then. Docsis 3.1 began rolling out over a year ago. Anyone can have 1tb speeds on existing copper lines. No more need for hybrid fiber optics.

Guess I lied since this is my 2nd comment.

Edit:
“So you fell for a scam. It happens. Get back up, dust yourself off, learn from the mistake you made and move on.”

Sure, I “fell” for a scam that requires the manipulation and knowledge of back end game mechanics.
Any other game, that would earn you at least a temp ban. we’ll see what it earns here, if anything.

You’ve got your numbers wrong. It’s gigabits, not terabits. just a slight difference there… (best case, only 100-fold)

Perhaps you need to go tell Comcast that they don’t offer tb internet speeds. I’m not an IT professional, so I’m not going to argue with you about it. I simply know what I was sold and use.
There is the 1tb data limit, which everyone has, then there is the tb speeds you can pay $180 a month for, USD.

Your network-card will top out at 10 gb/sec (max).
Your storage will top out at less than that

Also: data-cap does not mean it’s your speed…

money well spent then?

If this is your level of counting zeroes and understanding of money well spent, no wonder you got scammed.

So instead of arguing what the ISP delivers, now you’re mocking me for having good internet. ffs.
you know what 1tb speed is good for? running a whole farm of computers. Do i need to explain why i have a lot of computers?
porn. lots of porn.
or alts. that works too.

Refer to original post, bottom 1/3 section. It applies to you.

If Comcast sold you TB speeds then you got spammed in real life. As a Comcast customer - They mostly deliver 100 mbits/sec. In some cities they are rolling out 1 and 10 gigabits/sec. I have worked on Docsis 3.0 and 3.1 and it tops out with bonded channels at about 10 gigabits/sec. Most ethernet cards top out at 10 gigabits/sec. If you are using WiFi then you only get a fraction of that speed through even the best WiFi hub available.

I am sorry you got scammed in Jita, I suggest (as did others) using contracts if you want you value back.

I’m mocking you for for your lack of understanding of what you are paying for and trying to use your “good speed” as a way to show how “elite” you are.

I’m currently running on 1gigabytes/sec connection that I pay 40€ a month.

You aren’t a special snowflake.

I’m trying really hard to find the portion that says I am a residential customer.
Please, instead of trying to challenge me over what i purchase from comcast, either move on to something you actually have advice for, or stick to the topic. The topic, by the way, isnt what you can afford or are able to purchase through your local market.

Yeah, no you’re just making yourself look like an asshole.
I obviously listed my specs to clear up any “bad computer” “poor internet” comments.

Edit: maybe it wasnt so obvious. Eve players seem to lack basic interaction understanding, so trying to address obvious troll lines before they’re used might have been too much. please stop being offended. the specs were only listed because i am confident that my network and system isnt the entire issue.

Just use contracts and you will not be scammed, unless you read the contract wrong.

First of all, its a game. Please do not psycho-analyze someones character based on what they do in a video game. I shoot a lot of people in Call of Duty, doesnt mean im a mass murderer in real life.

Secondly, its a video game. People who get angry or pissed off for more than a couple seconds on what happens in a video game, have problems of their own. And yes, this is absolutely the case. Ask your parents to see a video of a guy who smashes his Computer Screen and breaks his keyboard in half because he lost a game. They will say that the person is mentally disturbed. And certainly, if someone is throwing accusations that everyone is a sociopath because of what happens inside a game, they are perhaps not the best person to diagnose others of their sociopathy.

Yes, and we have prisons full of people that act like Call of Duty players, except they arent, because thats how the game is designed.

Look, I get it. It sucks. Ive been scammed and baited and killed and lost a lot of isk too. But the healthy thing to do, is to realize its a game, and this is the type of game that CCP has created. When it happens to me, I hate it, but when i hear about a masterfully executed heist or scam, I cannot help but feel in awe and giddy.

And yes, EVE is a game that is touted as being an open, free sandbox. If you look at the reviews, you will see that most people will mention how the freedoms in this game differ from other games. And thats what makes this game, so great.

I love it. Even when i hate it, i love it. it gives me the ability to form real, lasting friendships, because Someone who i trust, can actually show that my trust in them is validated. The losses are real, which make the gains real as well.

You learned a valuable lesson. Dont use trade windows. Some people learn from their experiences and grow as a human being. Others, sit down and cry until they die of dehydration.

Which will you be?

This is not the real world, this is a game. a game where scamming is not only allowed it is encouraged. pirates be pirates.

you mean you didn’t learn from the first scam, you had to have it happen multiple times before you said hang on a second.?

best advice i can give ya is this.

don’t trade in jita, it’'s a shitehole.

if you must trade in jita use an alt and only use contracts and read the contract at least 5 times before you hit finish or accept.

oh and never trade while drunk. it never ends well.

The issue is you, stop using the trade window and only use contracts, simple.

oh and don’t forget to check it several times before you hit finish or accept, them zeros and who you are sending it too are real important.

“First of all, its a game. Please do not psycho-analyze someones character based on what they do in a video game. I shoot a lot of people in Call of Duty, doesnt mean im a mass murderer in real life.”

Firstly, psychology is built upon human interactions. You’re grasping at an entirely different topic when you try to liken the situation described to your call of duty fascination.
You might look as hard and long as you want, but you wont find a post from me bitching about getting killed and my stuff taken that way. You’ve seen bitching about someone exploiting game mechanics to accomplish his goals. Goals, by the way, which have been addressed by Dev’s multiple times.
Frustration is not anger or being “pissed off”. it is simply frustration. The reason, which you have obviously missed, is due to an exploit of the game mechanics. To be clear, many people feel frustration regularly. You might find you’re frustrated if you can’t open a pickle jar. Does that mean you’re angry and pissed off? If so, perhaps you need to be under supervision.
I’m aware that my analysis of the eve community isnt complete. I’ve been watching specific groups of people in eve since i started, even going so far as to place alts in their corps just to see what they’re about. I am confident in my statement that the majority of EvE players are sociopaths.
I base that largely on how people describe their own lives, when they arent busy trying to grandstand.
From what I can tell, the majority of players are in careers that keep them away from anything more than basic human interaction. They’re largely in the IT and call center fields. Meek in the real world, viscous and condescending in game.

I’ve worked in the prison industry most of my adult life. I’ve yet to see the call of duty mentality you claim.
For the most part, you could place the eve community in any prison in the united states, and CO’s would have a hell of a time telling the difference. That is, if everyone acted irl as they do in eve.
The freedoms in this game are fantastic. I love them. manipulation of game mechanics is a clear violation of the few rules CCP does have.

Yeah this is what im talking about.

Op isn’t being insulted and is throwing genuinely good advice back in the faces of people trying to help.
