Linux Software... for everyone

There is also option that windows will go free and the only thing that will remain that you will have to put some money into will be microsoft store that will have to be used to buy software and microsoft will take some money from that sell.

Iā€™m a big proponent of Linux. My flavor being Mint 18 Mate. That said, its great when it works out of the box, but if there is a problem it usually involves cursing and going back to Windows to cool down. To wit, I have an USB-Serial FTDI_SIO adapter that is said to be Linux PnP.

Uh, lots of forum time, Sudoing, typing, head scratching and generally wondering if Linux was for masochists.

Still canā€™t get it to work.

Other than that, love it

I didnā€™t see this being mentioned yet:

By the way, complaining about Linux is like complaining about driving stick. You either have the competence or you donā€™t. Itā€™s only stupid to complain about it when you could just learn it.

Lifelong XFCE user here, currently dual booting Mint 17 and Tails on my laptop, which is where I do all my secure computing (banking, torrenting, other secret stuff), while my windows PC is just for gaming, but with multiple harddrives, one dedicated as an EXFAT storage backup only in case of malware/viruses. I can literally scrub the SSD boot drive completely if that happens, and all my games and game settings are stored elsewhere, and backed up on the backup drive.

I have yet to use Linux for more than a few minutes via virtual machine, but from what little I know:

  • Ubuntu might not be worth trusting, for example that one time when it had integrated Amazon search.

  • Iā€™ve been told hat the Linux-based OS variants that use the Plasma interface are the best ones, probably because interface. for one example: Kubuntu.

  • For gaming, Wine is the most used program to make windows-exclusive games playable on Linux. (emphasis on playable, they do not necessarily run as well)
And then there is Lutris which aggregates games and game installers into one interface for Linux, aiming to make installing and running games and game updates easier.

Please donā€™t consider sayings as objective arguments.

Especially when you can try all you want, freely.

I needed months the first time I used linux to get rid of my bad windows-habit. Been using solely linux for years now, even though in my job I received tens of windows licenses.
If you want to use windows, use windows.
If you want to use linux, use linux.
Trying to be trendy is not gonna lead you to a better experience - though it may lead you to different experiences.

Slackware rules, wine sucks.

what would you recommend as a substitute?

also, can anyone comment on availability of drivers for mobo components from the big corps such as Gigabyte? Iā€™m talking chipsets, LAN, and so on. Iā€™m having kind of a hard time finding downloadable drivers.

You probably missed a memo - Windows 10 is getting itsā€™ money from you soon ā€¦ itā€™s working on the concept that Windows users really like to slowly move off of their fav gaming OS.

your evidence is invalidā€¦ just because it is on a microsoft owned file store does not mean that was made by microsoftā€¦ it is clearly a image from a user of some kind of forum or anything similarā€¦

I donā€™t understand why ppl fight so much because this kind of stuffā€¦ linux is great for all sorts of things (gaming not being one of them but it can be done) and windows still great for all sorts of things (gaming being one of the best of them) ā€¦ why canā€™t you guys just use what you like and let others alone? Iā€™ve be using all sorts of OSes all my life and yes some are just crap (BEOS and OS2 Iā€™m talking about you) but most Iā€™ve used had some thing that made it better for some random taskā€¦

I much prefer to game on windows just because as a datacenter engineer I already have my daily share of tweeking and command typing at the end of my shiftā€¦ my personal computer is a mac just because it does anything I ask of it without needing too much attention and well just worksā€¦ and all my servers (storages and other crafty things) all run on linux just because you can do pretty much anything with itā€¦ I donā€™t feel any particular pride for any of those machines, I much prefer to be proud when I customer congratulates me on a well designed and balanced data center that uses any combination of OSes and other technologies needed to get the job done (those include windows, linux, AIX, HP-UX, Solaris well anything).

make code (not that CODE) not warā€¦

If you are an IT guy as you say you should be very aware of the cost you pay for choosing convenience over freedom. If not then maybe read something about why this is a serious problem.

If you feel comfortable making the choice for yourself and accept the risks proprietary software brings that is fine, by all means use Windows and Mac. But most people are not working in IT and they donā€™t have the knowledge to make an informed decision and why should we not at least let them know that there are alternatives that are less problematic? Why are you offended by that?

We are not talking about different tastes of different people here. We are talking about serious issues concerning privacy and access to your own data and the power to control what your machine you paid for does.

I feel that this concern is pretty over estimatedā€¦ If you value your privacy to this degree be my guest and use whatever makes you feel safe(because you never are). I know all about microsoft data mining I just donā€™t give a rats ass about it, my windows machine is just a giant videogame and contrary to popular misguided belief macos is pretty safe in those regards. And donā€™t think for a minute that if you use linux you are safe, I donā€™t remember the last time I stayed more the 3 or 4 months without having to do a kernel and other packages updates on our machines because some security threat. Using linux you are just trading a software owned by a company to a software ā€œownedā€ by a bunch of random ppl that is not like saying that is automatically better.

Its not my place to fight for less tech savvy pplā€¦

discuss all you want just put more brains and less heart on it, more ideas less activism.

Maybe that was a valid line before we heard form Snowden that all those conspiracies about surveillance are not only true but on levels we failed to imagine. Maybe you donā€™t care because you make the error to think that your privacy is not worth it or you have nothing to hide. Maybe that is ok for you for the moment, but what about the future? Do you have any controversial opinions about politics? Do you watch porn? Are you comfortable with people knowing that? What if your political enemy grabs the power and goes full totalitarian, still fine with you they know all your secrets? And if you still donā€™t care, what about all the information about your fiends and family you give them who trust you and maybe talk about stuff they want no one else to know?

Iā€™m not talking about security bugs. Every software on the planet has unintended security bugs that can theoretically be exploited. There are obviously ways to at least mitigate that a little by reducing the attack surface, but there is no 100% protection from a targeted attack. But Iā€™m not talking about targeted attacks, because to do that they already have to suspect you are a bad guy and then this kind of thing is legit and what we want the gov to be doing.

The problem Iā€™m talking about is deliberately planted back-doors and practices by software developers that simply border on malware by just leaching every bit of information from your system they can. And yes talking about the second one, MacOS is better in that regards than Windows, but it is an incredibly tight walled garden with excessive control over their users and that is a separate issue.

This has nothing to do with ownership but with how the software is developed and shipped.

First the software components that go into a Linux distribution are all developed in the open so it is easy for thridparties to audit the software and track changes. And no that is not what the user has to do, tech savvy people like you and me from various background, companies, organizations, gouvernemts, etc. can do the audit and the more different people from different countries with different interests have audited the code the less likely it is one of the other parties could have done something bad with it and planted a backdoor or an anti-feature which may hurt the user who does not even have to know this is all going on in the background.

Secondly the Linux distribution maintainer who packages all the available software into a nice bundle ready for the user to be consumed does that with the user in mind. They are not the developer of the software with the interest of forcing stuff onto the user. They are taking care that the software they package is free of features the user may not like, you donā€™t get 20 browser bars when installing random software from the repo as a simple example. The value of that canā€™t be overestimated. Look at what happens when the software developer has direct access to the distribution: basically the PlayStore with all itā€™s garbage and malware.

But it should be. There are not a lot of people who are even able to understand the issue. Most people struggle with the basic operation of their software and are not aware of the problems or how they may expose themselves in ways they may not like.

What a dull world you must live in to even come up with such a sentence. I like my job and the things I do with Linux and free software not only because I really like technology but because it feels like this is the right way to do things, to help and not exploit other people. Iā€™m very much in favor of putting a lot of heart into what I do, be that in the job or my private live or my hobbies.

I never encounter a single evidence of this kind surveillance on any system I had and as a network engineer by trade Iā€™m tend to monitor from time to time everything my machine does including using a packet analyzer to see in dept what it is doing and yesā€¦ windows machines talk a lot with microsoft servers but we all already knew that.

Well I never had a single issue with that and as I said earlier never found evidence of any tampering with my devicesā€¦ there has been some cases with some notebooks from lenovo and I think MSI? but I donā€™t use them so I donā€™t careā€¦

Tell that to Canonical that includes a amazon search thing in now on every single ubuntu installationā€¦ Just because it is nice now doesnā€™t mean that will stay nice foreverā€¦ the only difference is that you can jump around distros but that is a huge painā€¦ I already find it to be a unnecessary pain having to learn how the package manager of every single main distro works to do my job consistently. rememberā€¦ the same laws that make companies like microsoft having to spy on you can make its ways to your favorite distro too albeit almost impossible.

Well thatā€™s a matter of opinion and my opinion is that Iā€™m bound to make the lives of my customers safer/easier and not a person moreā€¦ I will help and instruct anyone who asks about this kind of stuff but I wonā€™t seek them or try lecture anyone about it.

Nah my world is pretty awesomeā€¦ The thing is that I work with IT all my life and I was passionate about some things some time ago but too much passion made me a lesser professional so I scaled it down to just rightā€¦ I try to the best I can and when the customer says no I just warn about the risks and complications make them sing a risk letter and do whatever they want =P so I tend to be pretty racional when discussing this kind of things and boy at some places I worked we discussed A LOT (I B Mā€¦ A T & Tā€¦). so after too many meetings that were we almost killed each other I learned not to put my feelings on things or ideasā€¦ I put my feelings on people, art, music and momentsā€¦ for me this is a practical problem so it must be dealt practically not with pitchforksā€¦ more ideas less activismā€¦

but Iā€™m getting tired of this discussion so less agree to disagree?

fly safe? o7

I hope the irony here, that it was you who was seeking out a thread about Linux to tell everyone that you donā€™t use it is not lost on youā€¦

Where did you got that I donā€™t use linux? man I have 4 servers in my house alone, and physical servers at that not VMsā€¦ my original comment was about ppl fighting because of different opinions on OSesā€¦ and yes I may have voiced my opinion on using a linux desktop and gaming but Iā€™m not against it I just donā€™t use it for that.

Iā€™m here because as I too use a POSIX compliant OS I want to know what are the current developments on this area from CCP or anyone elseā€¦ I would love to have EVE ported to OpenGL or Vulkan or do as Blizzard does and make a native client for each OSā€¦ I HATE Wineā€¦

Valve had actually been working on their own version of wine, I forgot itā€™s name but if you enable steam beta on a linux install, it gives you the option to test it out. Itā€™s very small and stable for most games, but not all, yet.

And if you canā€™t find a downloadable driver they may not directly support linux. Our they might and you already have the drivers installed. You can check their website, or look for community drivers.

The tool is called Proton and is now out of beta in the normal version. It is basically a collection of different tools bundled together and wine (with some additional patches) is one of them.

The speed with how they improve it is also absolutely amazing. It is now possible to run a pretty big part of the steam game catalog on Linux out if the box and the list is ever increasing.

There is a reason for that.

Microsoft has been acting in order to destroy the open source community.

When you pay a license to microsoft, you give them more money for more troll patents. You feed predatory actions, which are targeted AGAINST you.
Microsoftā€™s been corrupting open standards for years, and suing people who were doing better. This lead to eg mozilla foundation, and even gave credit to google for its ā€œdo no evilā€ at that time. It also lead to the open office drama, also the
