Duke Shasta Announces “New World, New Home” Initiative
In his first public statement since the Tidebreak-assisted migration of his Sovereign Duchy of Beseth Dunijia colony from Venal to Syndicate, Duke Shasta Ardeind has announced a sweeping resettlement initiative. “In light of constant cycles of escalation and war cluster-wide by empires and pirate cartels alike, the Duchy is happy to announce the start of an initiative we are naming ‘New World, New Home’”, the duke announced at his colony’s primary spaceport this morning. According to the brochures and GalNet adverts that the Duchy has been distributing, the duke has personally donated billions of kredits to the initiative. In addition to paying for transportation, housing, and other essentials for the refugees, the “New World, New Home” initiative also includes hundreds of millions of kredits earmarked for constructing new infrastructure and upgrading existing ones. Several projects, including an ambitious proposal for a subterranean magrail network, have already been approved over the past week and construction is expected to begin imminently.
Dozens of refugees have already entered Syndicate space, with hundreds more expressing interest. The origins of these refugees range from Gallenteans and Minmatar fleeing recent Sansha incursions to Syndicate residents fleeing the recent Caldari crackdown. There have even been reports of baseliner crew members assigned to warships participating in the Warpath conflict abandoning their posts and fleeing onto Duchy-bound transports. It is doubtful that these immigrants will willingly subject themselves to slavery, so it will be interesting to see how the social fabric of the Duchy is changed by this initiative. While accepted social traditions in the Duchy have deviated quite radically from those of the Amarr Empire since its founding, many pundits warn that the small, yet politically significant, religious conservative minority may resist the coming changes.
Sovereign Duchy of Beseth Dunijia Commissions New Patrol Cruiser
The Sovereign Duchy of Beseth Dunijia has made yet another upgrade to its fledgling navy with the commissioning of the Steward of Syndicate patrol cruiser. The Talos-class vessel was one of the few ORE prototypes constructed before the project was shelved. Unlike most of its sister ships, this cruiser made its way into a Serpentis fleet tasked with patrolling the border between Outer Ring and Syndicate, before eventually being sold to an Intaki Syndicate station governor. The ship was one of several cruisers, battlecruisers, and battleships that the Syndicate leadership attempted to evacuate during their ill-fated capital-ship breakout attempts last week. This particular vessel was seized by a boarding party of Beseth Dunijian marines, who managed to reactivate the warp drive and fly the ship to a Duchy-owned outpost. After a thorough forensic investigation of the vessel and its databanks, the Navy opted to refit the vessel to their standards instead of scrapping it outright. It is unclear the exact specifications of the Steward, but since the Duchy opted to classify it as a patrol cruiser instead of a battlecruiser, it is unlikely that the Steward is equipped with the battleship-sized turrets that most modern Taloses carry. Instead, Pieyon Gilson, a Placid shipyard foreman specializing in equipping Gallentean cruisers and battlecruisers, speculates that the Steward will carry an unusually large number of cruiser-sized blasters, allowing it to pounce on unsuspecting ships and structures and unleash a massive amount of firepower over a brief period. “Effectively, they would have followed the Black Eagles’ example and stripped out its non-essential systems in favor of additional firepower,” Gilson explained, “but without going so deep into its innards as to necessitate a rebuild of the hull.” According to Gilson, such a conversion compensates for the failures that resulted in the original ORE project being shelved while not being economically unviable. For the time being, it appears that the Steward of Syndicate will be assigned a role befitting its name, helping assist customs patrols with inspecting refugee convoys and interdicting smugglers and raiders.
Amarrians in Aridia Breathe Sigh of Relief as Minmatar Raids Abate
Amarrian law enforcement have been left perplexed, yet relieved, as the mysterious band of raiders plaguing Aridia have disappeared. In the past week, there have only been four reported attacks region-wide, three of which appear to be attacks of opportunity against lightly defended industrial haulers, compared to almost a hundred the week before. At first, Amarrian authorities had assumed the mysterious band of raiders to be just another group of Minmatar Warpath combatants, but a more thorough investigation turned up some strange irregularities. For example, these raiders had taken extra steps to interfere with any investigation into their origins. They also rarely fought alongside elite mercenaries like Angela Babout, Lucan Rourke, or Yoshi Rurik, who were employed by the Minmatar to help raid Amarrian outposts throughout the Empire. Instead, they fought with a band of elite warriors in Gurista-designed ships. Led by Jariq Lehara-Kuriss, a grizzled Caldari Navy defector wanted in the State for multiple homicides, this group of ex-Guristas appears to be the leaders of this raider band.
In addition to attacking supply caches, the raiders also preyed on remote religious outposts, stealing ancient artifacts and historical records. While some had speculated that the raids were an attempt to recover and repatriate Minmatar relics, recent findings have led the investigation in a different direction. Instead, it appears that the vast majority of the stolen items relate to pre-contact Mishi IV, specifically the Ni-Kunni water barons. The few exceptions are mainly historical records that appear to hint at the presence of a Nefantar Wayfinder clan in Aridia just over a millenia ago.
Gallente Customs Intercepts Ancient Ni-Kunni Artifacts, Reportedly Liaising With Amarrian Authorities As Investigation Continues
Yesterday, customs officers in the Gallente Federation posted a press release announcing the interception and seizure of several crates of contraband. The stolen cultural artifacts and military supplies had been hidden among a mixed shipment of meat and produce being shipped from Aridia to Solitude. It is now coming to light that the shipment may be connected to the mysterious Minmatar raider gang that had been plaguing Aridia until their mysterious disappearance a few days ago. In a joint statement, Amarrian and Gallentean Customs announced a raid on the smuggler stargates they believed were being used by the gang to smuggle their ships and loot out of Amarrian space into Solitude. In addition to recovering more stolen goods, the customs officials seized hundreds of thousands of kredits in physical currency, made several arrests, and found documents that potentially link this gang to a wider organized criminal conspiracy.
Sovereign Duchy of Beseth Dunijia Publishes Judgement Regarding Organized Criminal Conspiracy, Recalls Deployed Warships
Over the past few days, traffic monitors in the TA-A7V constellation have reported the gradual return of most of the Duchy warships mobilized at the beginning of the month. The fleet, which comprised approximately two thirds of the entire Duchy Navy, had been deployed to various locations in the Placid, Sinq Laison, and Verge Vendor regions. We are now learning the reason for their deployment.
Earlier this morning, the Judicial Court posted its latest round of Judgements, which included the in-absentia convictions of several dozen Intaki Syndicate members for conspiracy, piracy, smuggling, fraud, and money laundering. According to the Judgements, these Syndicate members are accused of a major, multifaceted criminal conspiracy. Using shell companies, certain Syndicate members would purchase inbound shipments of children’s toys, food, construction tools, and other goods; alter the manifest so it appeared the shipment contained more goods than it actually did; and apply for insurance using the doctored manifest. Once an insurance policy was secured, their co-conspirators would stage a hijacking of the vessel, allowing the planetside gangsters to collect their insurance. Then, the cargo would be turned over to a gang of smugglers, who would smuggle it into the Sovereign Duchy of Beseth Dunijia to be sold at a hefty markup, either to the original owners or on the black market. This conspiracy was a major reason behind the many construction delays and canceled infrastructure projects since the Tidebreak-assisted migration from Venal to Syndicate. Tools and materials earmarked for infrastructure projects all over the colony were intercepted and stolen by the Syndicate members, causing unsustainable financial losses and forcing delays as shippers tried to tighten security around their routes. With the conspiracy finally dismantled, and additional funding earmarked for infrastructure construction through the recently announced “New World, New Home” initiative, it is likely that construction scaffolding will once again be going up all over the colony for the foreseeable future.
In the press releases, the Judicial Court also explained the reason behind the recent naval deployment. The court had been forced to try several conspirators, including the ringleaders, in absentia because they fled to Syndicate stations where the Duchy could not reach them. With the Caldari invading the Syndicate region in response to the Jita gate incident, however, these suspects were being flushed out. As a result, ships were scrambled to interdict their potential escape routes, and most of the conspirators were eventually arrested by naval marines when their ships were stopped and boarded.
In addition, the Navy sought to recover additional evidence, especially regarding the money laundering leg of the operation, which had mainly happened in Syndicate stations. This, too, was a success, with hundreds of pages of documents recovered from Syndicate ships. According to a half-page long Judgement published today, investigators have now been given blanket authority to confiscate funds in any and all accounts linked to the Syndicate money laundering operation. Sources within the Duchy law enforcement tell me that investigators have already identified several accounts and are looking at scores of promising leads, so hopefully most of the conspiracy’s profits can be clawed back by law enforcement and returned to their victims.
