Salvage Upgrades/Changes

Why though? It is a Salvage ship. That is like adding it to a Ore Miner or a Hauler.

:smirk: I got bitched at couple of yrs ago for giving away apparently good ideas to new players.

I use mine in a WH. Far more profit. Food for thought.

Ah. See I look at ships for intended design first, extras are nice but like the Noctis is a Salvage Hauler and Salvager so regretfully I dont think of things it could be used for besides things like that. It is nice we change them into other things but we should make them better at their job first.

Its already good at its intended purpose. You want a 1.1, I want a true 2.0.

Again, Please explain why though. What makes the Noctis need EW? I am all for a 2.0 but unless it benefits it’s primary job its kinda hard to argue in my opinion. Now if it was a T2 Noctis that was made for Salvaging/Battlefield Cleanup I coulda kinda see a EW one that held it’s new salvage in place cause well pirate. Also if they decide to make the new recommended Anons like i originally posted because they can turn to combat.

As I said, I find it a fine ship as it is. To me, a 2.0 should have some viability in a support role as well as its original intended purpose. It used to kinda good at that which I was willing to except that simply because no one in their right mind warps a Noctis into a battle in a wh.

Any details or examples?

Read this as most of my good fights/tactics are in there.

I seem to be the only one proud of my biggest loss of a bling ship and pod and what it took to kill me as I am the only one that seems to have made a post on the subject. Do your homework. I did.

Maybe you could link the specific thread with your blinged ship loss? (would enjoy reading that) Started searching but gave up after about your 15th post…

Do your own homework. Read the whole thd as there are better examples on how to be a better player than I am in there.

Lazy players lose ships. As it should be.

Back on topic, I turn all my wrecks blue, to no good use unfortunately.

Edit; Maybe those should be scannable? Like I said before, makes for a good trap!

It’s Xmas. Seeing 1,000+ posts dating back to 2019 kind of dampened my enthusiasm…

My lessons started in 08.

Reading old posts helped.

@CCP: let us scan for wrecks, gives us a special line of skills and equipment for Salvaging, add Salvage wrecks back to dailies and make Salvage-related activities part of the AiR program … please

I agree with you, @Aloy_Jumpila. In fact, yours is one of the greatest idea I have ever read in my entire life.
Well done.

Barring a T2 variant, the Noctis needs a short list of minor buffs to improve it.

• Faster align, faster warp speed, higher sensor strength and the ability to run both a micro jump drive (with Bastion equivalent cooldown) and covert ops cloak.

The covert ops cloak is so that it function in areas where it’s paper-thin tank would immediately lead to it’s destruction. The micro jump drive allows it to quickly jump around the wreckage fields.

I don’t think the Noctis really needs to be able to warp around cloaked to fulfill it’s role of cleaning up a grid full of wrecks. Every ship would benefit from being able to fit a covert ops cloak, but only few really need it for their role and for the role of a Noctis that covops cloak is overkill and unnecessary.

I also don’t think it needs a micro jump drive - better tractor beam range would be a more suitable buff to ensure the Noctis can pull all wrecks in a site. Still I don’t think even that buff is necessary; I rarely have wrecks outside my range and in the few occasions they were outside my range, the more expensive tractor beam would have had the range.

Yes - it truly, truly does. It has a paper thin tank - even when fit for tank (which tends to diminish its salvage potential).

With Consortium tractor beams it already has more than enough tractor range (the problem then becomes target range, so you need to equip a signal amplifier that gives you more target locks and range).

The Noctis has a pittance for cargo (which isn’t improved much with cargohold extenders, as this also downgrades its salvage potential and survivability).
. . . . .

I already use a different ‘salvager’ which accomplishes many of the things the Noctis isn’t good at:

• Fast align/warp speed, covert ops cloak (dodge gate camps or gank drops; warp between salvage and mission areas cloaked making it harder to scan down)
• 20k+ EHP shield buffer tank (enough to survive a Tornado volley or two)
• 4k cargo space (without any cargohold expanders)
• Very fast MWD speed (1400m/s+ - making it easy to reach those further targets)
• Ability to further increase tank and/or make it offensive (no easy target)
• Less than 1/2 the price of a Noctis and substantially less skill training required

So the question really begs to be asked: with so many other alternatives (including the one above), why settle for a gank magnet in the form of a Noctis?

Again, the Noctis doesn’t need a covert ops cloak.

It doesn’t need it any more than a barge, Orca or Isthar needs a covert ops cloak for it’s role. Of course every ships could benefit from covert ops cloaks to travel more safely, but only some ships need it for their role.

Ships that are meant to sneak up on other players or sneak through hostile space for their role (explorers, blockade runners, covert combat ships like bombers) require covert ops cloaks for their role.

The Noctis doesn’t do any of those things, for it’s intended role it just sits in a site gathering wrecks and warps away to safety when hostiles appear on dscan, provided the pilot is competent.

With those stats I assume you’re using a Deluge for salvaging?

Interesting idea, it looks like you prefer safe hauling over fast salvaging, because you’re giving up everything the Noctis is good for (long tractor beams, 10.7 effective salvagers, salvage drones) and use a ship that with only 3 unbonused salvage slots next to the covert ops cloak is honestly pretty bad at salvaging.

But if that works for you, great!

Personally I think it’s ironic that on one hand you complain that equipping cargo extenders on the Noctis ‘downgrades it’s salvage potential’ and on the other hand you’re choosing to salvage in a ship with only 3 unbonused salvagers and no tractor beams, versus a ship with an effective 10.7 salvagers.

The Noctis too can easily get above 20k EHP shield buffer, doesn’t need to have very fast MWD speed because it can use tractor beams to pull wrecks unlike your alternative ship. Just don’t use that 10k EHP fit you linked earlier, but add some tank.

For example this fit can easily pull faraway wrecks, aligns in 10s (with MWD cycle) and can pull those further targets so it doesn’t even need to burn around:

And that’s with cargo expanders, you could skip those for faster salvaging or more tank if you wanted.

I do think it’s fun to try using other ships for salvaging, personally I was thinking of a T3C for salvaging purely for the ability to be able to repackage my salvaging ship without losing it’s rigs so I can easily move my salvaging ship around in a blockade runner.

This however does not mean I think the Noctis should also be able to be repackaged without losing it’s rigs, just like it doesn’t need a covert ops cloak: it’s not needed for it’s role.

For the price, the Noctis has a very poor return on investment. And yes, I prefer “safe” salvaging over “efficient” salvaging. A couple of ‘Packrats’ (later retrieved) is a more cost effective way of retrieving looted wrecks. 99.99% safety is worth giving up a few million in actual salvaged wrecks.

Just because some of the Noctis stats look great on paper doesn’t mean they offset all of the disadvantages of the Noctis.
