If “toss 'em in the deep end and let 'em sink or swim” works so well why isn’t Eve a huge success? Why is FC, after over 20 years, finally adding a real newbie space that gives people a little breathing room and time to learn the ropes without fear of scams, ganks, etc?
As for the canard that new players won’t be “prepared for the harsh world of Eve” give me a break. How are they being prepared now? By being conned and killed before they even have a chance to comprehend what happened to them and why? I had to learn the ropes by joining a corp and getting with seasoned players who actually explained the game mechanics to me and made me aware of the dangers. None of the people who blew me up explained a damned thing to me. I was just kill board padding to them.
Exordium will be set up to allow for the exchange of valuable info between newbies and vets and to facilitate recruitment. Why could the possibility of keeping more people in this game be objectionable to so many of you? No matter how FC does it I see it as a positive.
Exordium will be attractive only until such time as players realize they’re effectively impoverished by remaining there. I mean, moving out to high-sec won’t be much of an improvement for solo players, either - but at least it opens up new avenues of gameplay for them.
I just cant accept the fact that people are really going to make an alpha toon over and over and over again to work around the 30 day limit…and for what, a very low tier ore? That sounds incredibly time wasting and just plain stupid. When they find out that the real isk is in other places…theyll be glad to get out of exordium.
The whole idea behind this is player retention, and making a new alpha every 30 days isnt going to hold anybody for long periods of time…especially a new player.
EVE is literally the longest-running, most successful space MMO in gaming history. It has been in the Wall Street Journal, Forbes, and various economic studies…
And, it will continue to be. Its not going anywhere for sure.
However, the type players that you and I are…versus the players today have an age difference of around 20 years. The whole gaming attitude and mentality are completely different. Gamers today have no idea about the length of time it used to take in the game to get where you wanted to be. That mentality has even rubbed off on the vets now. Its like a plague. The amount of entitlement is off the charts now.
For the games like eve…games that take massive amounts of time invested to be efficient in anything have to find new ways to keep these folks happy. Nobody likes losing their games of old…you, me, or anybody else thats been playing for many many years.
I want new players in the game. New players will carry this game forward when you and I are gone. Thats the way it all works. My first account born 2008…it was rough but i enjoyed every minute of it.
Those days are gone. Change is inevitable and we have to adapt.
@Christine_Creed
I just hope they monitor it more closely and/or react to the influence of that new 1.0 space than how Netease managed their way into their EVE Echoes economy disaster or how the economy on Serenity went South.
If we had only precedents from other games how an economy can collapse under the influence of no-risk zones and inflation caused by cheap influx of out of game bought assets, then i would be calmer. But we even have two EVE universe examples where the economy collapsed and i hope to play this game another 20 years at least and not have it ruined by shortsighted profit margins and some new player attraction only to have it closed shortly after.
The “doom and gloom” how you put it has real EVE examples out there. Open your eyes already.
If I’ve said it once on here, I’ve said it a thousand times. Any “safe” zone that has any sort of value to be obtained within will affect the entire economy if not restrained to it’s own area. The more you have of something, the less it is worth. This is a simple concept that is taught in every Econ 101 class…
And the ONLY way to implement a “safe” zone that won’t screw up the game economy is that no ISK gets in, no ISK gets out. Feel free to mess around in the safe zone all you want. Stay in there for years if you like, but you won’t be leaving with anything and no one else will be bringing anything in from the outside.
FC explained that while the current starter space is rookie friendly, pvp was possible, but new players dont realize they were “safe” in the first 30 days of being there, from pvp scamming or griefing.
Exordium was their way of giving them their pvp free space to learn how to fly without looking over their shoulders.
