You’ve come in and suggested that we replace the sand in the sandbox with ■■■■. You’ve basically said the quiet part of being a carebear (“I want to play an mmo but not interact with people unless I feel like it”) out loud. How would you feel if you had something you really cared about, and I showed up and attempted to smash it with a hammer? Would that not make us enemies?
Ok, lemme try this way, what hobbies or job do you have IRL @Allisane_Tergeryen?
I am a fixed income structured deals attorney and dealer-side economist that works for an American investment bank. When someone said that I don’t understand basic economics earlier, I wasn’t insulted. I lol’d, because I’m not less because someone has an opinion on the internet.
I also paint Warhammer 40k/ASoIaF miniatures on commission, GM irl tabletop rpg games, and write fiction. None of my hobbies are weakened by expanding them and sharing them with others.
No one that wants to join my hobbies with me is my enemy. I am capable of having the simple adult thought that no game is more important than another person’s dignity. It’s super easy.
Gentlemen, if you’re claiming that you’d rather no one have fun than the game changing…
If you’re claiming I’m your enemy because I like different parts of the game than you…
If you’re so insecure that you’re immediate reaction to someone speaking peace is to try to fight them…
Maybe EVE should stay the way it is to keep all of you together in one place so no one has to deal with you in other games or the real world.
I’ve changed my mind, CCP, never change.
Well i was going to make a comparison on if someone decided to change up how you work or what your hobbies are… and how you would feel about it. like if the folks manufacturing the warhammer stuff, what if they just up and quit or switched to another series, that you don’t like.
It should stay the same. Its clear you ain’t cut out for this life fam ![]()
I have supported something like this in the past. But I always advocated for it to have a time limit of some sort, and not tied to a monthly charge as suggested here.
In the interest of hearing out ideas that someone (most) doesn’t like, but could be viable if tweaked in the right way. A short-term immunity item, only able to be purchased from the account page, as a one-time purchase that has an in-game lifetime of a week before being ‘depleted’ and gone forever could be a viable option. So long as it’s a one-time-only purchase and can’t ever be bought by the same account ever again. Making it untradeable, i.e. it gets welded to your pod, would prevent someone from trying to game the system in order to maintain that immunity.
The above said, I really don’t think it would ever be introduced, if only for the simple reason being that it would go against the core of how EvE works. But the idea, if limited in significant ways, would allow for a player to have enough time to recover from a devastating series of losses in some significant way.
Wouldn’t it be funny if they castrated cloaks with the mobile observatory only to then introduce a pay option to replace it?
Don’t be rude, you have a grander purpose than making people feel bad. None of you are bad people because you enjoy different things in a game than I do and I’m not better than you for enjoying different things. I quite enjoy the game, I also pvp even if I am bad at it. I also get the visceral enjoyment in fighting an opponent that is armed, even if I lose. I just don’t want to fight all the time, bros. I don’t see how the game letting some people not fight some of the time would ruin your enjoyment so much. I’m going to be honest, I appreciate the advice to try other games. I appreciate the advice to try to adjust to the game in spite of a very visceral response I have to a very particular experience in the game: Being unable to escape in a civilian ship when I’m warp-locked, often by superior numbers.
I very openly shared that it makes me feel bad and it made me quit the game. Repeating that it makes me feel bad and that I should quit the game in a smug way indicates that you missed the point.
“Hey, your game has a built in engagement off-ramp that is serving as a permanent ceiling on who it can appeal to.”
This was directed at the developers as a person that works with a lot of systems analysis. If I was making consumer software, I’d want to know if I had inherited a design choice that was driving away an indeterminate number of consumers.
There are polite ways to say “I see the status quo as a benefit, because I feel community among those who are not bothered by this experience. It would make me angry if someone was not subjected to the same pain and risks as I am. You are seeking to be greater than us and we’re all equal here.”
I had to put that together by stepping away for a few days and trying to parse all the misplaced rage that was directed at me. That is my best guess why some folks got so angry, at least. I can only guess, because y’all were acting mighty rude and making it hard to understand what you meant. Correct me if I’m wrong; I want to understand my interlocutors, not just throw insults back and forth.
I wasn’t trying to take away your community, only trying to appreciate it as a paying visitor. Casuals give developers the resources to develop more stuff for the hardcore fans.
if you are getting attacked, then you are doing something to bring attention to yourself.
I’m apart of a service that raises standings for others, very few of us, in some mildly blingy ships, have never really encountered getting attacked unless it was by our own mistake.
I couldn’t even tell you last time i had an interaction with another pilot that turned into a fight/gank.
it’s easy to avoid. there are tools to tell you where to potentially avoid, or where its potentially safe.
Yes, with a web browser window open and multiple third-party apps connected to the EVE api as I play EVE, I can enjoy the basic information necessary to play EVE.
What you are failing to understand is that Eve is not a PVE game where you can just opt out of PVP.
While you claim there are plenty like you (there are some I am sure) Eve was not designed nor is it on a path to becoming a type of game where you can pick and chose when you want to be able to engage in PVP (besides your willingness to undock/dock).
All of the rage directed at you is because you refuse to understand/accept that your idea is something that does not belong in Eve. The idea is great if you wanna be a carebear and not engage in what Eve has to offer, but in the grand scheme of things it is a completely terrible idea that would hurt the game.
Once you realize this then you will realize why there is so much rage/anger directed at you.
I am not trying to be oppositional. I am only describing a user experience with the software. I keep getting told what I am asking is inimical to the game. I lost interest in the game because of an experience. I don’t even know if my remaining omega time went toward learning skills, I haven’t logged in. I cannot bring myself to engage with the software if it means going through that user experience like that again.
It’s important to me that CCP has my experience as a data point and that they know why I’m not coming back.
I proposed some kind of solution, because I hate complaints without solutions, even off the mark ones. I’m the first to admit that I am not an expert on EVE or game design. I only played for a few months. I’m a bit stubborn, I apologize if I seem dismissive. I am just incredulous that the most productive solutions from folks on the EVE official forum all involve some variation of two options
- giving up on EVE
- not being such a wuss
The second point is usually done in oft-repeated EVE-speak. Repeated mantras that signify that you are an in-group member.
“Ships are ammunition.” Wrong. The game doesn’t show me my corpse every time I shoot my projectile turrets. This is not how new users experience the game.
“Get good.” Give more money to CCP to level up your combat skills to be equal with opponents. Learn to exploit the bugs of this ancient exquisite corpse. I would much rather have some pvp gameplay that I found engaging. I have never had a good EVE pvp experience, because I still haven’t lucked into a pvp success.
“Undocking is consent.” A friend who left the game years ago recently told me the story of how his wife “won EVE” by Jita station trading until she could plex her account. I talked to her about how she did it and she said it was because she got tired of being prey, so “she’d hurt the economy of EVE with speculation.” She said that the game made her more spiteful and that “spiritual sickness” was why she left.
People don’t randomly go agro on a person for having a bad time with a game and suggesting an off-the-wall solution. I think I ran afoul of EVE player culture which formed around this design decision. And I apologize for trying to turn your culture upside down with changes to the rules of your universe. But lads, it feels bad that we have to be apart. I think it would have been nice if EVE had room for both of us. I would have made room and concessions for you. Props to the dude who came up with limited Immunity, even if he eventually gave up on it.
I would have liked your game to have been bigger and would have liked to be your friend.
I’m in
I’d pay that even just to erase edencom’s -0.0 and not have to belly flop into pochven
We say that, because we try to get people to understand that
there is no “safe space” in eve except when you are docked up in an NPC station. Even in a player made structure, you or your assets are not safe.
You should always expect to lose your ship when you undock. If you don’t lose it, that means you did something right. in the corp i’m in, my former boss, actually put me on blast on here over a ship i was flying and how it was fitted. EVEn then, nobody came after me in game to shoot my raven.
Though i’m sure there’s some people that would take advantage of shooting me in game, cause i’m not a PVP’er either…
i much prefer the PVE aspect, but the PVE aspect i’m enjoying, is actually helping other players with their standings…
You are in control of whether or not you are prey, make yourself look like you taste like ■■■■. thats how some insects do it IRL, they look as tasty as ■■■■. and they are left alone.
Nah, you were. I suggest No Man’s Sky ![]()
It isn’t ![]()
You obv don’t as you can’t be bothered to Google a game thats been out for nearly two decades. I’m pretty sure you sell potatoes ![]()
Yes you are potatoe seller, you’re trolling ![]()
LOL sure you did. You know a guy right?
Not Wrong. Ships are ammunition because for content to be generated you must fly a ship and for the cycle of content, whether it be pve, indy, pvp a ship must die. When a ship dies you get a new ship and the cycle repeats.
You don’t “luck” into good pvp. You go whelp a bunch of cheap t1 frigates/dessies and figure out what works/doesnt work then build up from there.
Eve is a video game. If video games affect your IRL self/actions then I would recommend not playing violent/not “safe” video games.
They do when you refuse to realize how bad your idea would mix with the game. Numerous reasons why a purely PVE server would be bad have been given.
Allow me to explain luck in PvP.
If I am the newest person on the server, everyone has better skills and ships than me.
Running into someone with less game time and skills requires I luck into a target who has worse skills and ships than me.
Considering the falling player numbers and less new players than ever, less suitable targets exist for me every day. Meanwhile, I am a target for everyone that started playing before me. I will need to continue searching until random chance brings me a target that I can beat.
It’s exhausting being on the lower end of a violence pyramid scheme.
Wanna know a secret? A lot of people suck at the game. So just don’t suck, and you can overcome the SP gap. It’s not a binary “you started sooner so you always win” thing.
To the OP: This is a terrible idea. You should remove this post.
Uninstall and go play the my little pony mmo. Here. I’ll link it for you.
It’s a matter of pure luck and random chance that I could run into these people.
If joining faction war meant the NPC states provided ships that I can throw at practice, and I wasn’t buying that with my mining profits, sure. But the game left me feeling like my own time was being used as fun thing to destroy by people who only attacked me when I had no chance to defend myself. That isn’t fun. Maybe I never made the right friends. I joined EVE uni. I really tried. It feels bad that the thing that makes me hate the game is so vital to it in y’all’s estimation.
I am really trying to iron body your arguments here. Please understand, losing a ship has made me cry, but I am not opposed to PVP. I am a lady, I maybe have a different experience with the loss and feelings of being trapped/helpless. From what I understand, most of the criticisms of the game from PVPers are that people can print money in abyssal thingies (I never tried one, the timer seemed like it would really stressful) or in null sec. But all the new players never even get to see that. If EVE is about clawing your way up from nothing and empire building, start new players in NS. That would have meant I had expectations set and pvp practice against other newbies.
Practice requires some positive feedback… I had none in EVE. I kept digging for fun, and in a shrinking playerbase, when I am the universal prey, when every ship I build or purchase is so much more expensive than when my opponents were learning the game, when my effort in game is constantly destroyed, when I am literally blown up for carrying water; these all make playing the game unfun for me, a new player. The thing the game constantly loses and does not gain in sufficient numbers to make the changes to economy work.
Thanks for all the folks with game suggestions, I actually went with Stellaris for right now. I have lost several times because I am learning, but unlike EVE I haven’t felt like any of my time was wasted, because using information that’s easily accessed in the game client, I can understand the mistakes I made that caused me to lose. Also, no one took pleasure in me losing and I could stop the experience whenever I wanted.
I’m gonna keep this thread updated with my evolving thoughts as an exited EVE player, as a data point for devs.
