It used to be I’d be glued to hot threads in here from the time I woke up until I couldn’t keep my eyes open for days on end. Because at that time there were actual players posting here. Players that cared about how things were with the state of the game.
Now I can pop in every few hours to every few days for most of the “fast moving” threads. No one really cares any more. Most of us are just going through the motions. Any new bros are literally new. Kids that only know memespeak and talk in text.
Draconian moderation. Eve has a fair number of ship toasters and smack talkers. Just look at Local during any fleet action. It’s not always polite and genteel. So when ISD starts going madmin, people leave. r/eve has a decent mods team that enforces the rules for the sub and Rediquette. So there is external accoutability, as opposed to Kugu or Scrapheap which are privately held.
The definition of insanity. Jenn covered the incessant threads about afk cloaking, wardecs, bumping, ganks, etc. The users here keep doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.
Dropping the facade. Here the devs have to be super duper serious uptight since they are on the official forum speaking on behalf of the company. on r/eve it’s more recognized they are people (important people surely) but people nonetheless. The more chill atmosphere helps foster communication imho. A dev can still get called out there and Quant did, but it’s a more open atmosphere overall (see point 1).
But every single poster there, including Chevis (who’s usually a bad shitposter himself) is still more interesting than you. At least reddit has a sense of humour. You’re still sitting there stuck on one little mean word with absolutely not concept of context.
The days of bullying people with moral outrage are coming to a close, Salvos. Go ahead and tell the ‘shareholders’ how ‘homophoboic’ the reddit is. See how well you go.
Nope. The EVE forums are virtually a constitutional republic compared to every other games. Try disagreeing with someone on the Elite Dangerous forums, or even their reddit, in an even remotely antagonistic way, and then count down from ten. You’ll be banned before you finish.
Comparing China to North Korea and saying one is better is not a very valid comparison. I agree that other forums can be worse, but that doesn’t absolve ISD from driving off the player base.
Driving them off? No, the forum rules are on the front page of the forums and are written in no uncertain terms. Everyone that uses these forums is subject to those rules, just like people who play the game are subject to the TOS.
If you break those rules, you’re driving yourself off. Nobody but you is responsible for your behaviour. The thing is, I shitpost all the time and I’ve never been banned. Had posts edited and removed? Had gentle reminders that my posts aren’t appropriate? Yes. Plenty of times. But there’s a difference between me and someone that does nothing but shitpost, and it’s that shitposting is not the only thing I do.
Bring something constructive to the forums, something worth reading, something worth replying to. If all you come here to do is post memes and smack in threads, then yeah, you’re probably going to get yourself thrown out for being disruptive, and make no mistake, you are bringing it on YOURSELF.
Addendum: likening these forums to either China or North Korea is as hyperbolic as calling the rules here ‘draconian’. The ISDs are incredibly relaxed and even engage in a bit of shitposting themselves from time to time.
Then how do you explain the fact that these forums are a ghost town? Everyone I’ve asked points their fingers at ISD. As to the metaphor, you are free to not like it, IDGAF. Maybe ISD have managed to get the stick out of their @ss since the new forums came up but the damage is done.
And watching Salvo’s thinly veiled blackmail attempt is all the more reason to not give in to him. If there was actually something bad happening he could easily contact the r/eve mods or even the Reddit admins. But he knows he has no protection there and people can downvote him and his bad ideas to oblivion.
Everyone you’ve asked is a population sample of what, exactly?
Maybe the forums are a ‘ghost town’ in respect to how many people are using reddit, but there’s still a lot of activity here.
The problem with reddit is it’s not just ‘bad ideas’ that get downvoted there. It’s ideas that the ‘in group’ disagree with. Reddit is very tribalistic, and people will always prefer to be part of the ‘in group’ for the sake of ‘inernet points’. Here, on the forums, your ideas and arguments can’t just be disappeared so easily, and they are there for everyone to see, no matter how bad or how good they are.
See, when you downvote an idea into oblivion, you’re not just denying their chance to express it, but you’re also denying the chance for others to read it. Which is great if what you want to do is control the narrative, but you don’t get to do that when the marketplace of ideas isn’t so heavily reliant on popular opinion, like here in the forums. Free speech and the free exchange of those ideas reigns more freely here, and for that, I’m glad.
No matter how bad @Salvos_Rhoska’s ideas are or can be, I will always support his right to post them. I don’t want him to get banned, or removed, I want him to keep posting. If his ideas are bad and stupid, then people will be more able to see that his ideas are bad and stupid. But even a broken clock is right twice a day, and if Salvos has been karmabombed and can’t post his one or two good ideas from time to time, then we’ll never benefit from them.
Isaac Newton was an alchemist. If he’d posted his ideas on how the elements work on reddit today, he’d be downvoted into oblivion and we might never benefit from his theories and mathematics on gravity as a result. Take a moment to digest and think about that. Reddit, as popular is it is, is one of the single most censorious places on the internet. So maybe the forums are a ghost town. All that indicates to me is that only a tiny minority of people still actually value the free exchange of opinion and idea, and that’s pathetic.
Thanks for proving you don’t know how r/eve works. Calling that sub censorious is laughable. His op would still be in the main post list and any replies that get down voted blow the threshold (which is around -100) would be moved to the bottom of that comment thread and minimized. It can still be opened and responded to so they would still be there for people to engage. Also scores aren’t visible for the first hour to prevent brigading. But hey thanks for playing.
That’s how all of reddit works, mate. Reddit itself isn’t the censor. The tribalistic communities do that to themselves. You literally made a point of it yourself when you suggested that Salvos doesn’t post their for fear of being downvoted into oblivion, ie censored. Frankly, if that’s why he doesn’t post there, then I can’t personally find any fault in that reasoning.
