Yes, most common subject in the forum: Give us friendly duels

I’d like to bring back a suggestion that has been discussed before 1000000 times: optional friendly duels.

The idea is simple. When both players agree to a friendly duel, the fight would automatically end when one ship reaches a critical hull level instead of being destroyed.

I think this could be great for new players, especially with the new PvE starter areas. It would give them a chance to learn basic PvP mechanics, try different fittings, and gain confidence before risking real losses going “outside”.

It would also be useful for friends and corporation members who want to practice against each other without having to replace ships after every duel.

Notice I’m not suggesting any changes to normal PvP. EVE should absolutely keep its risk-versus-reward gameplay. This would simply be an optional training mode that both players agree to.

or instead of all that - they learn some restraint. “first one to hull loses”. simple.

Agreed. There’s no reason this couldn’t become etiquette, adopted by convention, rather than something enforced by game mechanics. As gentlemen, agree to the terms of the duel before it starts. Any “dirty duelers” who break the terms will soon get a bad reputation and find themselves without sport.

Are corvettes really that expensive?

These would be great changes. +1

Pick a system! Let’s get this going!

I’m fine with first to hull ends the duel.

Me too. Let’s go!

No need for any code changes, you can do this now, just discuss the terms of your duel, go to a lowsec system, meet at the sun, and have at it.

Simples.

“Friendly duels” create a false sense of security.

The first thing you should do when coming up with suggestions for EVE is to think of how EVE players would exploit such a feature.

And someone with malicious intentions could easily do so by initiating such a “friendly duel” with a ship they would like to destroy, fight legally to hull and then use a second person to gank the target with significantly less cost when the target is already in hull and vulnerable.

So much for a “friendly” duel!

And now we’re back at exactly the current situation where people won’t duel others in ships they cannot afford to lose, and won’t duel people they don’t trust.

The only notable change is that you created an opportunity for a new scam that is going to get spammed anywhere in local “Friendly duels at sun!” where people just try to find gullible players to kill by pretending to have a friendly duel and then kill them anyway for their loot.

It’s just as risky as the current duels, except the game now lies to the players by pretending it’s ‘safe’.

A downgrade if you ask me.

‘Friendly’ duels are only safe from that one other player, but EVE is an MMO with more players than just you and your friend. All those other players (or characters) are not restricted by whatever rules you two set up with your ‘friendly’ duel and can interfere after or even during your duel.

A mechanical solution to prevent such a strategy could be to provide a magical shield to stop people in duels from being vulnerable to ganks, or magical healing to make duelists magically recover their health if they get attacked during or after the duel like some other MMOs might do. But EVE is not other MMOs, EVE is not magical and such a feature would be silly and out of place. In addition, people would again exploit such features to either protect themselves from PvP with this magical shield, or to exploit it by getting free repairs through dueling in case no logistics ship is nearby… and so we get into a situation where the mechanics get increasingly more complex, convoluted and exploitable.

No, the best solution often is the simplest one:

Dueling works fine.

Dueling simply is a mutual agreement to lift the HS engagement restrictions so that a player is allowed to legally fight another player in HS, just like any player can already freely fight a friend anywhere else in space outside HS where these restrictions do not exist.

There’s no need to add magical protection. If your friend cannot hold themselves in and cannot stop shooting when you’re in hull you don’t use an expensive ship or you don’t duel that friend.

Point taken. I could be remembering wrong, but I thought you used to be able to end duels after 5min if you stopped aggressing? I don’t believe this is still the case.

if another player challenges you , you invite them to fleet and you fleet warp to a safe . if they refuse then don’t accept challenge . fighting to hull was usually only inter-corp , and losses were replaced if you didn’t shut your guns off in time . :0

What’s the point of warping to a safe?

If you mean that the other person cannot get help at a random safe spot in system: a safe spot is only safe if no one is sharing that spot to others. If the person you duel with has ill intent and has a friend to kill you during or after the duel he can just as easily tell his friend which part of space they’re in for a single cycle of combat probes, or even more easily drop and share a bookmark for them to warp in.

It’s only a safe spot if you trust the other person, in which case this entire suggestion isn’t needed.

it’s an outdated system , admittedly .. though you would see combat probes and in a busy system may take a bit to determine location (try scanning an individual ship in Jita) and shared bookmarks take ? minutes to be available . if you trust the other person , this entire thread isn’t needed . the recently implemented 100% hull resist from the new epic arc may be useful to accomplish OP’s request .

edit for syntax

The problem with 100% hull resistances on request is that this can and will be exploited by players to be invulnerable in other situations in HS.

Do you see someone about to gank you? Quick ‘friendly duel’ your alt and you get 100% hull resistances to be immune to the gank.

Any additional rules implemented to make duels ‘friendly and safe’ are likely going to get exploited.

The current duel rules are fine.

What are they doing to the game?

I think he meant the “first to hull ends the duel”.

part of the new-player experience ; though i think FC is not serving new players well with such mechanics . the acceleration gates have ~ 7km activation radius , which fails to educate about the collidable structures that hang your ship up for no good reason to endless angst ..

At least in Exordium they don’t have to worry about being ganked while they extricate themselves from said objects.
