How is “Most expensive MMO with zero new content” a “fair price”?
Some points that should be made.
One, CCP you have a way that people will pay money for without raising the base price of the game in order to generate revenue that doesn’t affect game play in any way. Alliance Skins, station skins and a ton of other cosmetic micro transactions that you can do that will sell and will generate revenue for you. If you would just do the bare minimum on those you would generate more revenue than what you are going to get after all the unsubs from raising the prices.
Two. you are giving the players less than a month notice on the price change. Almost every other company out there gives at the very least a 30-day notice that the price is increasing thus allowing subscribers out there a chance to budget and account for that price increase. You really should have given more notification on this.
Third. Let’s say a person has 45 USD to spend on subs for the month due to other obligations or bills. Guess what you just cost yourself 5 bucks as somebody on a budget like that is just going to unsub an account rather than pay you the extra 15 a month. You seriously did not consider the ramifications on this both from a budgeting perspective or from a loss of subs perspective. You are over all going to lose money on this rather than make money. It’s simple economics.
Fourth. You have not added anything new to the game to add value to the game. There is zero new content that actually adds value to the game to make a subscription worth more. There are two ways to make money on a product. Either sell a lot of said product so that you are making a profit aka quantity. If I have a product that costs me .50 to make and I sell it for .60 but the quality is low then I need to sell a ton of them to make a decent profit. If I was for example to sell the product for 2 dollars then I am going to sell less of it, as such the quality has to go up so buyers feel like they are getting their moneys worth. This game and all games are not a must have for the vast majority of people. As such they are not going to pay 20 USD a month for a product that they don’t feel is worth it. If you are going to raise the price like this on monthly subs then you really do need to increase the quality of the game to increase the perceived value the players are getting from that price.
Fifth. Overall, most of what I am seeing complaints on is not the price increase on PLEX but rather the monthly subs. Heck you could have increased the price on PLEX a little more and the player base as a whole would have still been ok with it as long as you had not increased the prices on the subs. Honestly you could have increased the price on PLEX and the vast majority of the player base would not have cared or changed a single spending habit on it. If anything as the price of PLEX in game increased, you may have actually ended up with more monthly paid subscriptions.
Overall, it will be interesting to see how the numbers play out in a month or two. I am personally predicting CCP will actually lose money on this. I however could be wrong and enough of the player base will continue to sub at the new rate to make up for the lost subs.
This is one way to drive players away.
It’s the best sandbox ever created. Still number one.
@Brisc_Rubal might be useful to ask CCP for the number of subscriptions cancelled since the announcement
a fair price? average mmo sub is £10/m without having to give them a years worth up front
great product? backward updates that have only really been “balances” with no SERIOUS new content in quite some time.
Call it for what it is at least, a money grab to the dwindling numbers to keep the lights on at CCP
This!
Yah I hear CCP needs to consider exchange rates also. The bottom line is CCP still gotta keep the lights on?
I do agree when we have seen little content like triglavan invasions. Or changes to incursions it does make people angry! I wish CCP kept going with the trig content.
So what? If they are not willing to pay a fair price for the luxury of playing this game then good riddants.
I expect that in the near term there will be re-education of customers involved in this. People will have to come to terms with valuing this game properly at the higher level and supporting it as they should. This might mean some people unsub, but in the long term when things stabilise it will be vastly improved.
This is not the way.
they have taking away 50% of the fun stuff sense 2008 and added nothing
Why are their prices not fair? You have the best sand box ever designed at your finger tips, and you want to pay penuts?
We can’t wait to meet up with you in person and discuss this in detail at Fanfest in just a few weeks.
I don’t mind the price increase as long as they gate the Alpha accounts. I don’t want to pay a premium for a game with freeloaders running around griefing all over the place.
Dear CCP,
i can understand the rise in sub cost if eve is struggling, if the bills are rising due to inflation or else.
I think the community is more than willing to save the game if CCP is in Financial problems.
Talk to us, show us data, show us numbers and we understand, tell us how you want to fix the issue.
Just rising the price, telling everyone how grate the game is (without delivering for month) to a community that’s already pissed is a ■■■■ move.
I always said “no, this update isnt killing eve, its just a change” but holy ■■■■, this i news is hurting eve a lot. Never heard so many people talking about unsubing a toon or more (not the rage “i unsub”, a “i cant afford this”) in my corp.
Awesome move, i cant afford 3 accounts, without the 3rd my 2nd is useless so i unsub 2.
new Eden was an awesome place but everything has to end someday
All three Accounts unsubbed.
Also, almost forgot to even mention this. If you guys weren’t breaking our economy every couple of months and the game was good then I might even be ok with the price hike. Nothing you guys have done in the last two years has, in any way, improved anything.
There are two ways EvE could be sufficiently profitable to be reliably here for another decade- they could bring in way more players or they could get more money out of the existing pool of players.
Bringing in more players probably involves a lot of things we don’t want. Probably eliminating HS ganking, for example. Probably giving new players a lot more SP, ships, etc. Probably making the game as a whole easier and simpler. More WoW-like.
So, the alternative is to get more money from us. CCP either does that with pay-to-win mechanics or by rising subscription prices. I think this is the least-bad of the bad options.
such a shame you cant create a mess like you can in null sec with flights and flights of fighters
but still i would love to just see the whole of some of the null sec blocks just warp into jita and just shoot something to get concorded thatll really throw in some tidi
Youll be back once you calm down and realise the game is worth it, its probably worth more.
