There are several ‘newbro’ corps out there willing to let folks do their own thing and just being available to answer questions and host classes/training fleets. Eve Uni, Brave Newbies, LinkNet, and a few more I can’t name off the top of my head.
It’s a decent way to get your toes wet with fleet engagements - in at least a few of them you are guaranteed reimbursement for PvP losses in training fleets as long as you fly one of their training doctrines (a specific ship hull and fit); so even if you die while out on the training run, you will be able to replace your ship and give it another go next time (or even immediately). The chance to learn about fleet commands (in-game and voice chat alike), some specific types of maneuvers in space, effects of various PvP modules, and, after a little practice, learning how to run a logistics ship, is all a very valuable grounding in features of the game. It won’t necessarily prepare you to go be a solo or small-gang hunter right away, but it gives you experience with fleet combat (so you can decide if that is engaging for you), and getting blown up (hopefully after blapping someone else, but it’s always a bit variable!)
