Shared Bookmarks: Use-case Discussion

Can shared bookmarks be copied by the receiver? Else it would not be a proper replacement for a physical copy traded over.

Expiry setting should be per folder only. It’s too much hassle for little benefit to manage that on the individual level. Folder makes sense because the use case is limited to wormholes, escalations mostly. I don’t see any other bookmark type which should auto-expire.

There are WH types that stay for 24h - probably most of the WHs

With my proposal (restate: If a player remains undocked in space for longer than 16 hours they can no longer save corporation/extended access bookmark until they dock with a structure.[/quote]

  1. Not every system, especially WHs, do have structures
  2. Not every ship can move structures in it’s cargohold

Q1: bookmarks trade. Players most commonly use this to sell expeditions. If you implement some kind of scam-free trusted system for expeditions trade, this will cover most cases of bookmark extractions.

Q2: 1 day, 7 days, 30 days, no expiry. IMO 4 hours expiration is too low. 1 day is enough for “it will expire before you know it”.

Q3: As mentioned in QoL suggestions, temporary bookmark can be used to automatically create quick “place where my ship was destroyed” location. It’s a common problem for new players. Old players can use this too to return back and exact revenge or try looting what is left on battlefield.
Also if you were to implement some kind of “quick bookmark” button in future it should have quick settings with expiration adjustment (via right-click or hover pop-up menu)

48h, 7 days, infinite

1 day is too short for wormholes. 7 days maybe useful for missions. I can’t think of any other timeframe. Personally I would only use 48h for wormholes and escalations, and keep the rest on infinite. Don’t make it over-complicated.

I see no problem there. That’s the trade off if someone wants to seed a shattered wormhole, especially with an exploration bot.

As for the not being able to deploy a structure from an imicus, again, I want to introduce more risk and tradeoffs to alpha scan seed alts. Just get a second alpha character into an Itty V with a riataru if you’re desperate for a structure.

Next.

Is there a way for you to add a quality of life improvement where bookmarks can be added to your overview.

that way I could make a tab called bookmarks and not have to do the right clicking and fumbling to try to find them in space.

Far too much and we don’t need that many options, deleting bookmarks isn’t hard.

Question 1:
Sometimes a subset of the bookmarks in a folder is taken out a given to a certain player to share. To be honest as a player and CEO of WH corp, it’s rare that I or most of our guys use this option and the few use cases I can see that we have work arounds could be made with this system.

Question 2:
24 hours, 48 hours, 7 days, infinite.
The average hole in WH space lasts 16-24 hours and the 7 days is for when the group is doing an event, that being an eviction or something else.

Question 3:
I would want it on the Sub-folder level, as it would be possible to define when each bookmark in the SF would expire, this would also open up for the option of not just having 3 options for expiry times, but it could be implemented that there is 4 default option and a custom, the custom you could see to whatever limits CCP want ex. min 5 hours max 6 months or whatever would make sense, this would give a much better system where each group can define what makes sense for them.
Just as an example Epicentre Syndicate would have 3 folders:

  1. C4-static chain: This folder would have an expiry of 20 hours as our c4-static chain would never last more than 16H(± variance)
  2. C5-static chain: This folder would have an expiry of 30 hours as out c5-static chain would never last more than 24H(± variance)
  3. Other chains: this folder would also have a 30 hours expiry as it could be any type of connection to our home hole

I am aware that there are a few holes that lasts 48± hours, but as a corp who lives in C4 space it is rare that we come across these, so we would not be interested in keeping these more than 24H as our connection to it would be gone before that anyway and any group who does deal with them, would have their folders set up differently as would be allowed by the system suggested.

The bigger problem I see with using ACLs are the fact that it removes the option to determine who can delete and who can’t. As of right now our system is setup such as that new members can’t remove bookmarks for the first month that they are with us. This could be achieved with ACLs, but it would mean that my directors and I would have to micromanage a lot of ACLs as there is no nice way to auto purge someone from an ACL if the leave the corp, and we would have to add them and all their characters to one ACL and, when they become members, we would have to move them to a new list. On top of that every time some leaves the corp, we have to go through each ACL to make sure that all the characters belonging to the person who left are removed of all of our ACLs.

This adds a lot of annoyance to the leadership in a corp and just more management for no reason. I have never been a huge fan of ACLs in their current state; as a CEO of a decent size corp they add a lot of micromanagement. It would be nice if there was an option to automatically remove people from the list if they were no longer a part of a corp or alliance, or if one could add corporation titles to the ACLs.

#1: the big use cases are that people sell escalations (not just a null thing. It’s often done in highsec if someone can’t run a site) and people who sell tactical bookmark packs.

#2: most of the time, it’s never, but it depends on what I’m bookmarking. For example, if I bookmark a moon rock, I could need that for up to 72 hours. a wreck, just over 2 hours. A mobile depot, up to a month.

#3: Most of my bookmarks are made in haste, and managing them isn’t usually a top priority, so as far as expiring, a truly sane default (say, clean up at downtime after n days, where N depends on the object bookmarked, and current position is infinite) that I don’t need to touch in the heat of the moment is really, really good. I won’t be moving it to a folder while I’m running like a rabbit, so per bookmark is kind of essential.

The fleet bookmark thing is a real thing you need to consider. I’d ask a bunch of NPSI FCs in particular (they have it worse than alliance/corp FCs for this) what their needs are. Maybe simply make “Current Fleet” a default ACL?

So is this a thing we’re getting ?
Please tell me it is!!!

And if so, when ?

How about offensively donating a couple hundred folders of bookmarks to the enemy fleet?

Yup, still in development

Bookmark folders only become visible to you if you are provided a link, which you then have to actively choose to subscribe to. There’s also no way to browse publicly accessible access lists, meaning public access can act like an “access with link” document

If you can make it editable like the orbit and approach commands, that would work for me. At this time I see myself only needing a delay of 24 hours, or permanent. But the ability to change it would suit many different folks.

How will the BM trade between strangers work in future?

I use bookmark vouchers as a historical record of places I have been or things I have had at a certain place (before their unscheduled demolition) without cluttering up my menu with objects that do not exist. I currently keep them in special containers near the location of the object they represented.

It sounds like I could create a bookmark list under the new system and not subscribe to it unless I was modifying it, but it I doubt it would carry the same feeling as you get from sifting through a box of bookmarks and related memorabilia.

I have planetary colonies in a wormhole system with highsec static. Another character on same account is logged off in said wormhole. When I need to collect planetary resorources, I log in my wormhole character to scan the exit and see where it leads to. Will there be a way for my wormhole character to trade the bookmark of womhole location to me character after these changes?

They won’t.
End of story.

No need. Your alt will automatically see the new BM appear as soon as your main saves the exit - assuming he registered to the bm folder of the main.

  1. main creates a BM folder named “WH exits” and sets its availability to “visible by acl group : alts”
  2. main sends a mail to alt (or convo him) with the link to the BM folder.
  3. alt clicks on the link sent and registers to it.
  4. when main scan a WH sig he places it in the “WH exits” folder.
  5. when alt is logged, the “WH exits” folder he registered to now shows the newly added signature(s) as soon as they are added by main.

Steps 1 2 3 are only done once, step 4 and 5 whenever needed.

Convoing him won’t be an option since they both can’t be online at the same time, but thanks for clarification!

That’s why convo was in parenthesis as an optional way to do it.
Of course if they both are online, you can convo. But in case you can’t, sending the mail once (or adding it to a mailing list or a common chat) is still doable.
