Main AFK cloaky thread

It has. But not as much as you say.

I’m open to nerfing the cloak/cyno combo. Have been for ages. It’s still going to cost you local though.

aaaaaand, here we go.
The brick wall already.

The brick wall is you. It’s going to cost you local. Get used to it.

Local hurts content by giving people too easy and too early a warning. And it’s not just afk cloaking that has come about because of the overpowered nature of local.

Log on traps and hotdropping with cyno’s are used because local makes ambushes impossible.

Understand. Local is a big content killer. Once that is dealt with, afk cloaking and cyno’s can be adjusted.

I intentionally left local out since my aim was simply to point out that cloaks themselves are not the problem, and therefore do not require changes. Hopefully that’s (even more) clear now to the nerf cloaks group.

I’ll leave the local/cloak/cyno/null stuff for others who better explain it than I to beat that deceased equine.

It’ been linked many times before by others, CCP Fozzie stating out right that local was never intended as perfect intel etc.

Then it should be a simple mater to link it again.

and why has local been allowed to be “perfect intel” if it was never intended for over a decade and a half?
Local has been used as such for that long if I remember correctly?
And local leaves out some pretty important information for a “perfect intel” system. (coughshiptypecough coughshiploadoutcough)

I’m on holiday, so really can’t be arsed relinking something yet again. As for the above neither are at all relavant when all you care about is if a non blue name shows up in local. In which case local gives 100% accurate intel that you are not alone in system.

The same could be said for afk cloaking.

This thread has a group of comments from devd regarding afk cloaking. There has been more since.

Q: Is there going to be a fix or a solution for the AFK cloaky-camper game? (Applause)

A: (CCP Fozzie) So we temporarily fixed cloaky-camping really effectively in the march release. When local stopped working. (Huge laughter.) Cloaking camping really went away. But, I actually do think that the cloaky camping issue is really tied with local and so that’s the kind of thing I’d like to see us look at with the observatory array structures we may look at in the future; be able to go in and look at that system as a whole.

Cloaking really is an intel mechanic, and so is local, and we see in other areas they’re really tied at the hip in how they work. So, that’s how I’d really like to approach that.

Is from here;

Ta, I’ll add the saved arsedness to my main stockpile for when I’m home

Removing local should also make the live harder for botters.
But i am against removing local. That`s whats one thing wh-space is about, i thought. Perhaps a time-delay before anybody appears in local, but a local should exist somehow.

To fix the cloaky camper problems i would suggest you implement some kind of new energy source ( like the capacitor) that is used by the cloaking devices. If the energy source is empty, you will automatically decloak. To reload the battery you have nothing to do expect beeing decloaked. You could do something like 2 hours of cloak need 5 minutes of decloak. This would make cloaky permanent camps a little harder. Especially if you go afk for the whole day, and stay cloaky in system. Not to talk about all those bots out there doing nothing but reporting the local situation…

Not only had hundreds before you the same idea… please avoid falling for the trap these people lay out.

There is no problem. They just make it look like there is a problem. These guys are likely RMTers and botters, and afk cloakers hurt their profits. Renter trash, a tiny minority of people who have issues with afk cloakers, want to have the game changed for them, disregarding that it will affect anyone else who uses a cloak.

■■■■ these self entitled whiners, RMTers and botters.

Yeah and they deserve it. Nothing you say changes the fact that there is no problem. Nothing anyone says changes the fact that the people who benefit the most from changes are RMTers and botters, and that these people are most likely RMTers and botters.

Try harder.

It’s not an ad hominem when the criticism of a person’s motives is directly relevant to the discussion. The people whining about AFK cloaking are mostly RMTers and renter trash, people who are terrible at EVE and want zero-risk PvE farming in nullsec because they can’t survive any other way. That’s a demand that is directly against the core principles of EVE. It is important to point out that any other excuses for removing AFK cloaking are just a flimsy pretense of balance concerns on top of the real motive: dismantling that core identity of EVE for the benefit of people who suck at it.

That ad hominem defence can not be used like a blanket catch all.

So the cloak has no problems what so ever?

Riiiiiight…

So the option to change cloaks and miners to get rid of bots is not valid in any format or with some modification to include ways to eliminate other botting activities?

I still think this would not hinder ATK players but would punish AFK players and botters.
AND
It leaves local alone while active cloak players can still do there thing.
Plus AFK miners lose their shi*.

Kills 3 or more birds with 1 stone.

No that doesn’t work.

The whole point of afk cloaking is not knowing they are there or not. This is why people do it.

If you had to press a button every five minutes, then people will know that if someone is cloaked, they must have been at their keyboard in the last five minutes.

This is the fundamental issue. Null space is meant to be high risk/high reward. You should not know whether someone is there or not. That’s why local is broken and afk is allowed. It’s the only way to create doubt.

No matter what you think. Nerfing cloaks is going to cost you local. Local is the root cause of afk cloaking as well as other player behaviors. The overpowered nature of local is why afk cloaking is ok.

Nerfing cloaks shouldn’t even be considered since they are used everywhere else without issue. Cloaks are not the problem.

Please… no. Local is not the root cause.

The root cause for all complaints is either the fragile psyche of players seeing the afk cloaker in local, or the loss of profits that makes RMTers cry.

Root causes are, 99% of the time, found in people. The shallow logic comes from several generations of people being raised into a consumer centric system, combined with lack of proper education. That and western medicine, which established that silencing symptoms equals healing the patient. Fascinating topic I will not dive into though. : p

First I’d like to say, null bears have the worst case of entitlement I’ve ever seen. Ever! No where have i seen people accept big pay outs but accept none of the risk and responsibilities. No where have i seen such moaning and qq’s from people who choose to live in null and who can just as easily live anywhere else in the game.

But the cloak/cyno or intie/cyno combo is an easy, powerful and low cost tactic that could be looked at. Even outside of null, the possibility of instant-cap-fleet dropping on your head is reason enough to avoid usual suspects. I’d be open to something like delays before a cyno can be used or jumped to. Something to give the target of a hot drop a way to prevent a cyno from completing and pushes the meta to cyno’ing fleets off grid. But I’m very much in a minority in that opinion.

Instead, we can nerf cloaks in sov null without touching them else where. If they are linked to OA’s (which is most likely) then the service or module that is used for hunting cloaks can be unique to sov null. So wh’s, npc null, low and high don’t change.
