An Open Letter to CCP from Current and Former CSM Members on the "Prospector Pack"

That was easy … and I was one edit away from silencing you …

Get ready to deepen your pockets then …

Um, not sure if you should work on your isk efficiency or what, but you most certainly don’t have to be in the top 1% in order to benefit from plex. Moreover, I view plex less as something that benefits the richest players in the game, and more as something that helps players to become wealthy.

Okay, I see. You’re only a couple of months old. So, your isk efficiency should rapidly increase over the coming year or so, and plex will become something that you can also afford without burning yourself out.

Also, yes, having more time to play is an advantage. However, it is not necessary to win fights or have fun, nor does it provide an insurmountable advantage to your foes. In fact, it’s kind of funny how we simultaneously have people complaining about it being impossible to catch up to vets and/or compete against the autistic no-lifers, while also having older no-lifers complain about loosing their caps to cheaper, less skill intensive ships (in fact, they’ll cite this as an indication that there is a balance issue, and that caps need a buff. And I, in turn, will argue against them because I don’t want to play a game where outcomes are determined by who’s the oldest, who does the most grinding, or who spends the most money. Example Thread 1, Example Thread 2, Example Thread 3).

And, if that wasn’t enough for you, various streamers and youtubers have imposed play time limits on brand new characters over the years in order to demonstrate that you don’t need to be a no-lifer vet in order to have fun, get kills, or accomplish goals.

So, my advice to you is two fold:

  • Don’t blame shift- Many players like to look for external reasons for why things didn’t go their way. They blame their enemies, their teammates, game balance, RNG, game devs, whatever. It honestly doesn’t matter. Because the truth is, they aren’t trying to figure out what went wrong, they’re trying to protect their ego. They don’t want to admit to themselves that they suck. But here’s the kicker, it is their attempts to protect their ego which ensures that they suck. After all, you can’t address failures or shortcomings if you’re psychologically incapable of identifying them.
  • Don’t fall victim to a defeatist mentality- The biggest obstacle standing in the way of your success aren’t no-lifers or vets, but your own attitude and determination. You cannot succeed if you give up. I know that it can seem like the deck is stacked against you… and it is to a certain extent. However, one of the things that makes Eve great is that there are several designs in place that help newbros catch up to and compete with vets. However, rather than make yet another post explaining it, let me link one.

And, of course, if you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask.

EVE favours effort, knowledge and preparation. Many people aren’t willing or capable of doing that and as such they don’t do well in EVE or they have to rely on the pack to survive. That has nothing to do with time played but rather with braincells invested and it works two ways:

If you yourself don’t put in the effort to git gud then you will forever be on the receiving end and the whims of others will forever rock your boat.

If you DO put in that effort to git gud you will soon realise that many around you aren’t on your level and that even at a relatively young EVE age you can outperform others including much older players.

They removed barge pack. But didn’t said they won’t make new ones…

Wtf? More fitted ships?

$2.50? What a bargain!

They’ve been doing that since the expert systems came out. Since you can get those for free in the NPE, it wasn’t viewed as being as bad as the retriever pack.

Did they? I don’t remember two types of expert systems.

Just gonna point this out, trying to jam New Player Packs and Expert Systems down potential newbro throats just immediately makes most people who would likely enjoy EVE long term, is more likely to turn them away from the game outright.

If you want newbros to experience what it feels like to fly with higher skills and try things out, put in an in game simulator that lets you test out a skill plan/set in an instanced simulation, not only would this not dismantle what EVE is about by injecting ships into the game and ruining low end industry, but would also give newbros an actual tutorial via an instanced simulation, you can put in any number of tutorials, as well as challenges for new players, and even vets to play to learn more about how the game works and how to play.

Otherwise this nonsense of giving a newbro CODE. gank bait is liable to make people never want to touch this game again.

What confuses me is that if your data show that giving these things to new players improves their chances of sticking with the game, why is it something that they need to pay real money for instead of something provided through an in-game NPE framework?

The real lesson from your data on the success of the paid ship packs could be that it might be even more successful as a new element of the NPE that provides the same benefit to new players without locking it behind a paywall.

Not only is tying it to a real money transaction adding a barrier to using it, but it’s also giving the impression that a credit card is a shortcut. That’s not how a new player should be conceptualizing the game.

Here’s the thing though: If it’s a given that a large percentage of new players quit which, to a degree, will always be the case then it makes more sense to “milk” a bit of cash from a whole lot of them even if that would potentially piss off newbies who might end up playing long term.

If people like what EVE has to offer in terms of gameplay and scope they will play it anyway, the tiny minority of people who do like the concept but go “well now I won’t do it” when they see packs like this are easily offset by a whole bunch of short term players going “oooh shiny”, if only because people are accustomed to these practises.

Yes, I was showing new bros these packs and some quit just at the sight of it

I showed your post to new bros and some thought you are full of ■■■■.

I got 73 people together since today’s downtime and they all disagreed. Or was it 703 people, can’t remember.

As an aside, we had our meeting with the monetization team today. We expressed our concerns, laid out in the letter and the concerns since then, and the conversation went on for about an hour and fifteen minutes.

I don’t feel much different now than I did before the meeting, since I know you all will ask that. Before the meeting I was pleased they pulled the pack and acknowledged player sentiment, but I still have my concerns about where the lines are and how that information is communicated to the community. Until we get some kind of firm statement from CCP on those questions, I will remain concerned, regardless of what we’re told in private.

That’s about as much detail as I can give you. I expect we’ll have more of these conversations in the future.

What Swift provided is quite clear. There is no lines as long as it’s for new players. From direct selling SP to hulls. It all started as feature “to help new players”. Most of community already shrugged it off anyway

Are those long term battle hardened EVE players and devs or “new blood with fresh ideas”.

I’m open to giving them a opportunity to clarify that this isn’t the case, but I think you’re probably right.

Being a decade+ vet, in null-sec, whose daily driver is a T1 Caracal this makes me laugh a little - not gonna lie.
